Bush beans are my favorite style of bean due to the versatility you have in how you choose to grow them. They also work well in small apartment or urban gardens as you can cram a ton of green beans in a vertical system, or even grow them in containers.
As we continue in our gardening for beginners videos, I think learning how to grow beans is a great foray into a more 'complex' plant than leafy greens or herbs, but without upping the difficulty too much.

Beans pull nitrogen from the air dude... they can get it from the ground but it's not as good for the soil health.
The tower... rotate your pots from bottom to top regularly to keep nitrogen draining into the top of the tower
You can also use an innoculant to further help them fix nitrogen
My dad was an organic gardener his whole life. No matter where we lived we had a garden and a freezer full of vegetables for the winter. One of the things he taught me was to plant a second batch of beans 2 weeks after planting the first batch. Especially if the garden was tiny. Thanks for your videos.
I gave my daughter some old beans in the pantry to play for sensory development. Now they are growing all over the spot and my kids are excited. Im excited too.
The beauty of the greenstalk is that you can just reorder the layers, so you could rotate the bottom level up to the top and vice-versa, and in theory those soluble nutrients will wash back down and re-equalize. It won't be perfect, as the original bottom plants have already absorbed a lot, but I've had success with this approach. I've also noticed that, despite the great design, greenstalks tend to starve the lower levels of water. I suspect that the weep holes just start getting clogged. So, I tend to rotate everything every few weeks to just keep things more balanced, and it gives me a chance to wash out those watering trays. And if you rotate the tiers proactively, you tend to prevent the nutrient imbalance before it happens. (I do the first couple of rotations after only one week each, because a lot of the nutrient migration happens early.)
Side note: I use letters and numbers for the pockets, so each tier gets a letter and each pocket gets a number, so A1-6, B1-6, etc. Makes it easier if I want to keep a log and/or manage the succession planting of greens. I just write the numbers on the outside of each pocket with a permanent marker.
Sounds labor intensive and defeats the purpose of buying their expensive vertical planter. 🙄
Those planters are extremely heavy to be “rotating “ from top to bottom and vice-versa. Some people use containers to put less stress on their backs & knees. Doesn’t sound efficient for women and people with mobility issues.
In college I killed every plant I bought including a cactus. I have learned so much from your channel that I am now able to grow veggies for my family. I would love to see some tips on how to harvest/dry out seeds from the garden to keep it going year after year without having to keep buying seeds. Thanks for all your amazing videos!
The key to succulents: benign neglect 😉👍
PSA: Some commenters are correct in that beans are legumes and thus fix nitrogen with Rhizobium bacteria, so it's important not to OVER-fert with nitrogen. But this is also quite a unique way to grow beans vs. how they are normally grown, which is why I recommended adding some balanced organic fertilizer that containers nitrogen AND other nutrients.
I love sprouting beans in a mason jar with moist paper towel. Works like a charm every time and they transplant perfectly!
Yum!
"I've been deep in the bean world" EPIC LINE
Just planted beans in clear cups with my kids for some fun observation of germination. Never had problems transplanting them before. Thanks for upholding the idea of starting bean seeds indoors and in effect supporting preschool spring projects everywhere. 😊
This is the kind of video i like, it shows the beginning and how things turn out, wish more of them were like this
Check out Hollis and Nancy homestead. He does videos just like this. Now I’m gonna go double check that’s the name of his channel.
Hollis and nancys homestead
Chicken wire pole in a pot is blowing my mind. Gah! So much inspiration from your videos. Thanks
;) I have a vid on those!
nice video! i never thin out and chop my seedlings when more then 1 comes up in a cell...i always split and transplant them!! no sense to thin seeds ,,never made sense to me always transplant with no shock !! been gardening since the late 80s!! lol keep up the great videos!
Yeah that's the more economical move, Bill!
That's some beautiful bean footage 😉
Not sure why but this weekend, I have been OBSESSED with your channels. Like I have watched around 10 hours of content the last three days alone. :0
Although it is great information, so thank you for providing the content
I also started my bean plant on 4/8 with paper towel n zippy bag and after 3 days I got good roots...I’m excited
Nice - that's a good way to do it :)
This is perfect!! I can only garden in containers at the moment (upstairs porch) but I sure do try!
It's not perfect. Dont add nitrogen to your beans...
His garden looks awesome
@@Doctoranthetardis , true, beans are nitrogen fixing, they pull nitro from the air, form a symbiotic relationship with a bateria in soil creating root nodules, which basically makes nitro for legumes.
Have you ever heard of the garden tower 2? I would love to see you talk about that type of vertical garden
I like the grow tower! Thank You for these tips Kevin! I have Bush Bean seeds...glad to know I can start them indoors. That apron is very nice
You're very welcome - you got this!
Glad I found this. Just getting ready to plant my bush beans in green stalk. Found a bush bean collection that had heirloom purple, green and yellow beans. Very exciting
Wow I’m so glad I found this video! I’ve been looking for growing beans in the greenstalk! And I never knew you could start green beans and transplant 🤯 thank you for all the info!!
Around 120 pods. I like the apron. Thank you for all the tips you give.
I just got one of these and am having similar results. I'm planting lettuces and herbs in it but they are likewise doing fantastic. Love it!
Love that!
Great video - very helpful. Did a few beans in the Greenstalk last year - now I have some great info on how to maximize the bean harvest and diagnose any nutrient issues!
I’m new to your channel an I want to say I’m learning a lot. This is a great idea 💡 I would have never have thought of this. Thank you so much.
I'm glad you're enjoying, Teresa!
I start mine in an Acura Ponich system I made with horse troughs and I use the pond outside that we have goldfish and they do very well transplanting
Thanks for all of the information you give us for free.
Suggestion for all the nutrients going to the bottom layers, couldn't you just disassemble the layers and put top trays on bottom and bottom ones on top? I also heard when they look like they are done producing, cut the plant way back to one little sprig with 2-3 leaves and it will regrow into new producing plant. It has an established root system.
Put the mycos directly on the roots, its more effective, might help w the transplant shock.
I am happy to transplant my beans because the bugs eat them before they get large. Thanks for the tip!
How do you combat the pests once you discover them? Do you clip the leaves? Do you look for the pest and remove it gently? Or is there a formula sold in store we can get to help combat them?
I do enjoy your gardening tips. We live in London, UK and you know what that means!! Overcrowding and plenty of rain. Oh and lockdown because of the Coronavirus. Keep up the good work.
I can’t wait for my Greenstalk to get here! Deciding what to plant may be the most difficult part 👊🏻🌻👊🏻
I purchased the towers, following your advice. Thank you so much !
Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for! :)
Love how you used this to advertise a product I wasn’t looking or needing.
I really enjoyed the progression in the same video! 33 is a master number :)
I'm really love this. Very helpful I think you will get 20 Bean pods. I want to grow snow peas♥️ also very cool apron. I really want the little garden table set up you have.
I Can’t wait to give this a try sounds interesting
Thanks for the vid Kevin and Hi from Australia! You may have said this elsewhere but what are your fav types of Bush beans to grow and eat?
I love that vertical planter. What other plants will grow in a vertical tower planter like that? I bet strawberries would be good to grow.
I'm thinking 42 pods and that apron is boss.
I just purchased the Greenstalk Planter. Thanks so much for the great tips👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😁😁😁
I'm doing some stringbean research and came to peruse some of your videos I may have missed from years ago.
I'm prefacing that to say that I ffwd'ed and landed at 7:20, and was like.... "Wait. WHAT ARE YOU ABOUT TO DOOOO AND HOW IS THIS RELATED TO BEEEEANS???!!!" 😅😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I had guess 30 beans!!! How neat. These are great tips
This video came at the perfect time for me! Been having issues with my beans germination. Started 9 in seed pots but only 1 made it. ;-; Might go for the soaking method.
Just make sure you don't go over 12hr or so!
I soaked mine for 12 hours (overnight) then laid them on a damp paper towel in a ziploc bag til 1/2 inch of root showed. Then put them in the seed starter tray 1" deep. I've had 42 successes this month and had 3 beans that didnt continue. I did throw away 12 seeds that either showed no sign of germination or that began to rot from being in the paper towel too long (I tried for inch long roots instead of being happy with 1/2 inch). Let me know if you try it and whether it worked or not
Did you ever find a solution to the nutrient run off problem with the discoloration on each tier?
Love you my friend ! Thx for all your information !🥰 I live in Cleveland Ohio,so I am planting inside right now, the seeds ! I am new to vegetables ! But not new to gardening ! Flowers ! But you can’t eat them 😂! I use to be a flight attendant for AA and spent many overnights on your home of SAN ! Love it ! Especially Old Town !🥰 where did you find the tower garden ?
Ok. Thx love your videos !
I need one of those
That Apron, You are such a nerd and I’m all about it!!! Love it 😂
coolest apron ever brother. 250 beans is my wild guess.
I really like very much.this is nice idea.the best way grow to many plants.i am from India.
Recently, I bought a Tower Garden. I think I'm going to plant beans in it.
I'm guessing you'll pull about 35 pods today. Love your channel, thanks for all your help!
WOW bonus Monday with 2 videos.....Love the Apron!!! going to order one. I am always loosing stuff when I garden. Great tips on the Beans btw. Have you ever dried them or have a video on what you do to preserve them if you have a huge harvest?
I swear this apron has saved me so much time in the garden it's crazy...I usually leave tools EVERYWHERE lol. I have dried, but I don't have a vid
Excellent work! Your results always impress me!
Check out our long beans growing on our tremendous trellis structure! Vertical all the way!
To myself I said 30 ,then you gave the results ! Lol
I like to see stuff grow so I grow everything in the house . Making paper pots for the fussy stuff .
What are some other plants that would do well in a vertical tower? What can you mix and match? I just bought one, and want to maximize it's use. Thanks!
You can prevent the yellowing stage if you add a little bit of ammonia to the soil and then mix it around.
:)
i started my green beans indoors at the beginning of april, a few of them have already started to fruit, a couple more are starting to grow their flowers. started yellow beans a couple weeks ago too, im excited for those. i heard they don’t taste as good though.
Love beans
300 beans! I love your apron! I would love that!
I WANTED ONE OF THESE BUT I COULDN'T AFFORD IT SO I WAS GOING TO SAVE UP FOR 2 OF THEM...BUT THEN I FOUND A KNOCK OFF OF IT AT DOLLAR TREE BOUGHT 10 OF THEM...IM GOING TO SEE IF IT WORKS UNTILL I CAN BUY THE "GREEN STOCK" ONE'S 👍😊
Sorry no dollar 🌲 by me , want to trade...
I just received my Garden Stalk and I'm excited to grow beans. I have a few different kinds of bean seeds. Do you have any plans to make more videos about growing in this system? Curious about organizing different types of plants in it.
Question PLEASE??? 🙏 When should you pick the flowers & when not to... & on which plants?? 🤷♀️ I heard some plants are done with their life cycle once they flower, but you can pick the flower heads to keep them producing longer. Or to help young plants grow bigger, such as with cucumber & pepper plants. So I picked all the first flowers of my young bean plants... but then saw a vid saying to pick excess foliage to spur more flowers to grow.
I'm so confused. 😒
Nothing like a good bean :D, I usually directly sow because of stretching problems. I will try sowing inside this year under light. Probably will get an earlier start.
Yeah stretching can be an issue for sure - you can also bury deeper if you wish
@@epicgardening should be better this year . thx for the tip :).
Deep in the bean world 😂
I bought one a few days ago. I’m excited for it to arrive.
NICE!
@@epicgardening sorry to ask, but where do I buy it from? (bean tower) Thanks!
We started green beans outside, then 4 days later we did some indoors, the indoor ones are 5 times taller than the ones outside .
I wish you would put where you can buy the various products like the tower and the fertilizers. Thanks
You rock. Loving the tips. 2 8x4 raised garden beds underway.
Lots of space!
Yay, a new video!! So inspired, thank you!!!
Im going to guess 82 beans! Im definitely interested in one of these towers. Super cool! Keep up the epic gardening work :)
Didn't hear any mention of pinching the flowers/initial beans off to spark additional growth. Heard different stories and just wanted your take.
the beans look great.. love beans !
Absolutely love the apron and appreciate this video as I had planned to try this but didn’t know how ♥️🇨🇦
loving epic gardening,
😍 I've pinto & blacks beans love watching your channel. Thanks for sharing.
Great video, thank you for sharing!
I love those planters!
Me too!
If you want to save seeds how long can you harvest before you should start letting the beans dry
Thank you for sharing! Please tell us, what exact bean variety did you use? We love the slim (petite french?, IDK), perfect cultivar!
Well you didn't give me time to comment on number of beans you harvested! Lol! I was going to guess 30! Thanks for tips as I'm new to gardening veggies!
27 beans and I like that apron.
Great Update
Great video Kevin,
That vertical tower is pretty cool!
Oh that's awesome! Had my hand in gardening for the past year and looking forward to doing beans. Which video can I watch to find out more about the vertical tower you have there? Secondly if i cant get it, what is a suitable container depth to plant these beans?
I always assumed beans were climbing type plants and require a trellis.
Plant 1" deep in 6" containers!
33! Lol! I have 6 varieties of beans here but I'd be very glad to have any other variety given to me. 😂😂😂 Ugh... well... thanks... in advance? Lol!
I love it
You make that apron look good💚
💯🔥
Great tips! Last summer, I successfully grew blue lake bush beans but these bright green caterpillars with bulbous black heads were rampant. How would you suggest getting rid of those/prevention. It was frustrating and gross constantly picking them off/squishing them.
May want to grow the beans under row covers for those bad boys!
BT spray. Perfectly safe
My number was 17 :) you nearly doubled that, nice!
I water my Greenstalk and THEN liquid fertilizer - you won't be washing things out. Also keeping Greenstalks uniformly moist eliminate shock of drying out and overwatering.
you are my favourite youtuber, keep up the great work man
Thank you I appreciate that!
Will you post more videos about what and how to grow in a green stalk?
Sure!
Epic gardening video, Kevin !!! Out of curiosity, how much sq. ft. area would be required to grow the same amount beans in a raised bed?
I'm definitely gonna have to snag myself one of those EPIC aprons here soon! 😎
Makes my life way easier in the garden!
Thanks for the bean info. I am trying beans in my garden this year. First time since my parents passed as they were epic gardeners.
One question. I can get fresh organic cow manure. Would that help my beans if I use it in a manure tea for my beans and other green leafy plants?
I typically would let that manure rot out a bit before using, and I would use it directly instead of a tea
@@epicgardening I can get 4 year old goat manure that I'm working into my garden. Not as high on nitrogen though.
100 beans. I love your videos
Do you ever use coconut coir seed pellets to transplant bean starts in the Green Stalk?
