  • Can you 3D print a surfboard at home? Well I try it and I came up with something that resembles a surfboard! This project took me the better part of a year, I hope you enjoy this video. I'll have more videos on this surfboard later in the year hopefully.
    I still need to fiberglass the surfboard and test ride it.
    Also I posted an in depth write up on Instructables, if you like it, vote for me in the 3D contest:

    This is SO beautifully thought out and presented! I REALLY appreciate how you actually show the problems and issues as well as your tests (eg the different glues) instead of just showing how it all (apparently) went brilliantly and fantastically well the first time you tried it. This board looks awesome!
    Next time you glass a 3d printed board or are bonding plastics with epoxy, sand (80-100grit) the plastic and then flame treat it before glassing. It will help everything bond together way better, and it won't delam as easy. Treating the plastic first makes a massive difference in how well the plastic bonds to the figerglass with the epoxy. I use to build snowboards all the time and getting the plastics to bond well and not delam you needed to treat it first. I wish the site I learned to make snowboards was around still, so I could share it. It had great comparisons of how big of a difference it made. Also never touch the plastic with out clean gloves after treating it, the oils from you hands can't prevent a soild bond. Plastic can be way picker then eps with oils.
    When we are allowed back to the beaches I would love to check out this board out!

      Flame treat it? .75 mm walls seem like they'd warp in a crack addicts heartbeat. What's the trick?

    • @WaveWasters
      @WaveWasters Před 3 lety +1

      @@iandrake4683 thinnest I've done is 1.25mm I believe. The trick is after you sand you pass a small torch over it very quickly in light passes. You want to do enough that is just melts the little hairs slightly that the sanding makes. It takes a little practice to get the amount right. But even if you don't get it perfect it makes a big difference. If things start warping you have the heat on too long. The tests I did with top sheet material, if I just epoxied it, it would easily peel off. Slight sanding was harder to peel off. Sanding with flame treating was really hard to peel off and would sometimes take fibreglass with it.

    • @iandrake4683
      @iandrake4683 Před 3 lety

      @@WaveWasters thanks for the explanation. I'm making an efoil board and I'm printing the foils, fuselage, and mast with plans to fiberglass them after. I'll print some tests and give it a try!

    • @WaveWasters
      @WaveWasters Před 3 lety +1

      @@iandrake4683 that sounds pretty cool! If you do some searching on the ski builders forum you can probably find a better explanation of the process. Sidewalls I use to flame treat and the attached wood core wouldn't get burnt, quick light passes to start. If you have some failed test prints Id practice on them with some epoxy and wood or fabric and see how much force it takes to peel it off.

    • @iandrake4683

    Hey Andrew! Dunno if anybody else has suggested this yet but there's an infill type called "Gyroid" which doesn't create separate air cavities in the interior of the print. You can use this to mitigate the concerns you had at 5:35

    Next step would be for you to make your filaments from recycle plastic. That would make it a very environment friendly board. Have you heard of the Precious Plastic movement? Check it out. Cheers from Portugal. Stay safe!

    I think the small gaps between prints would help with the epoxy and fiberglass sticking a little better than you think it's going to also if you did any sanding prior to glassing those small cuts and scrapes help too

    Nice video! Maybe you could try to improve the bonding between the fiberglass and the board by sanding it before glassing with rough sandpaper (60 or 80 grit) just to scratch it without making it weaker. I never worked with 3d print so i don't know if the problem is only mechanical bonding or also chemical. Another step you could try is to apply a "paste" made with epoxy and Qcell, wait for that to dry and smooth that out like is used for EPS boards, this way the glass would bond for sure. I know this last suggestion would probably deviate too much from the original project but is something you can do in case the board delaminates completely. Keep it up!

    • @AndrewWorkshop
