    Unsustainable growth once again and building just suburbs will backfire on Oshawa. Planners need to rethink housing in Canada.

    The biggest problems like panhandlers and drug problems have been with Oshawa for decades. Oshawa was used as a dumping ground for Toronto. I remember decades ago people being afraid to go downtown at night, although it really wasn't dangerous. Most of the boom is in North Oshawa.
    And the bus service is nowhere near as good as Toronto's and it recently got worse. They cut back on it during the pandemic by removing stops and routes which haven't returned.

    A few years ago Oshawa was dying because of the GM plant shutdown, so I'm surprised and a bit confused why the city is booming now. What happened? Did they re-open the GM plant?

      They just built a bunch of houses. And since housing is so scarce people will live anywhere.

    • @NoobZxReviewZ
      @NoobZxReviewZ Před 3 lety +11

      Nothing to do with Jobs, its simply all the houses were cheaper and many moved from Toronto. Brampton, Mississauga, etc causing the market to boom. Oshawa itself has gotten a lot worse, but on paper based on the housing prices you'd think its Beverly Hills.

      @@robichj They're even worse. I've seen bungalows and small townhomes go for almost $1M in the western Durham Region. Pretty much anywhere from Pickering to Coburg is super expensive now, and isn't going to slow anytime soon, at least until the market crashes.

    Oshawa, for some reason hasn't gained the negative attention that's due, from corruption to incompetency, just imagine everything that could go wrong in a city, and realise that Oshawa is innovating ways to become even more terrible.

      To be fair, all these houses are being built on former farmland, so no trees are being cut down. But I don't get why Trudeau thinks all immigrants gotta live in either Toronto or Vancouver.

      @@asadb1990 Ik, but we don't have the housing infrastructure to support everybody coming here. Toronto has one of the biggest housing shortages in the world. I don't have a problem with everyone settling here, I just have a problem with city leaders (esp in Toronto) refusing to build housing in their cities.

    My aunt lives in Oshawa and her area is apparently riddled with homeless ppl a lot after the GM closure who are living in their cars etc., and literally will use their outside water taps or electricity to charge their phones at night!!! I've never heard anything like it and you wouldn't expect such a thing, but it's happening. She had to get a special lock installed on her outside outlets to prevent them using her electricity. Had she been told of this problem in the area, she would not have bought the home. Just crazy

    • @writerpatrick
      @writerpatrick Před 3 lety

      She should have a switch installed indoors that turns off power to the outside sockets. It's also possible to install a tap on the inside that will turn off the tap outside.

    Where i am, stoney creek, essentially hamilton, the city has grown from 500,000 in 2018 to 800,000 in 2021. The city cant keep up but they aint stopping it either. Allll they build is town homes and semis. It pushed the value of my fully detached to worth nearly double what i paid for it hahaha. But the city needs to calm the expansion. Its wayyyy too much
