  • Garage Renovation Part 2 - We removed a Lally column and the center divider in our 2-car garage, and redesigned the opening with a single, massive 17 1/2' wide insulated steel garage door, and new wall-mounted LiftMaster opener. This video will guide you through the garage door installation process, show you the options available with purchasing a new garage door and give you tips for working with a contractor on your own garage remodel project.

    UPDATE: Many have asked the cost, so here it is: The door cost + installation was around $5,500. The structural work, removing the Lally column and opening up the 2 bays into one (Video 1), was about $9,500.
    I highly recommend both of my contractors, here in the Northeast USA: LallyGone (lallygone.com/) for the structural engineering and column removal, and Des-Carr Doors (www.descarrdoors.com/) for commercial and residential custom door installation.

    Great video Mike! That side mounted opener is pretty sweet. I've never seen one like it before. Too bad I just replaced ours a couple of years ago, but maybe I can move it to the single door when that one dies and get a fancy one for the double door. The garage is looking great! Thanks for sharing.

      Thanks Thomas! Even though my old openers were working I didn’t reuse them because they were at the end of their expected life cycle. I like your idea of switching things up when your old one expires. Repurposing is always my first choice!

Thanks for the push, I think others will appreciate it. Just so you don't have to scroll, here's the answer you seek...

    Great project Mike . . . how about mounting some lights on the inside of you new garage door - when you open the door in the evenings, you'll still have a brightly lit workspace 😀

    • @MikeFyxdt
      @MikeFyxdt  Před 2 lety +1

      That’s a cool idea! I have to think this through because are used to have shop lights mounted between the doors with the two door set up. To mount lights on the door would be cool, but I need to come up with a way of getting them power that won’t be affected by the movement of the doors. Another alternative is to mount some shop lights on the walls, just under where the doors come up. So many choices! I appreciate your creative suggestion!

      @Mr. Preston - thank you for watching and commenting! There’s definitely a dividing line where DIY needs to yield to the experts, especially when safety and structural integrity is at risk. While it was a big investment, I smile every time I pull into my garage or do a car project. The modification is highly recommended! 😁

    How are the Liftmaster 8500W accessories now, especially the deadbolt and LED light? I hear the deadbolt accessory is made from cheap plastic gears and break down in a year or two.

    • @MikeFyxdt
      @MikeFyxdt  Před rokem

      I haven't had any problems with my LiftMaster deadbolt, knock on wood! I never installed the LED light that came with the opener because my garage lights are on a motion sensor, so I really didn't need it. Overall, I am very pleased with my LiftMaster opener, which I have owned for about 1 1/2 years. Thanks for asking!

    Seems like a lot of time and money spent to remove a pole. If I were you I would get a lawn chair and a cold beer and just sit in the middle of that garage and enjoy the hell out of the pole not being there! Well worth it!

    • @MikeFyxdt
      @MikeFyxdt  Před 2 lety

      @LJ Sites - Lol, definitely a lot of money to remove 2 obstructions. But I have to say that it is well spent, and I have been enjoying the benefits that the new layout offers. The structural work and garage door installation went surprisingly quickly, but a considerable amount of time was spent planning the project. Hopefully these videos will help people make the most of their time when planning their project. I look at it this way…There are many home owner expenses that you don’t have a choice about, like repairs and insurance, many of which you may never see the benefit. While this was a major project, the rewards are immediate. It removed a pain that I dealt with every day for the last decade. My only regret is that I did not think of doing it sooner!
