  • Learn more about John Chapman, the frontier nurseryman who became the basis for folk legend Johnny Appleseed. Biographer Howard Means (Johnny Appleseed: The Man, the Myth, the American Story) explores the facts behind Chapman and the Johnny Appleseed mythology. It is the tale of two men - one real and one invented - the period in which they lived, how they have been used in our national story, and what they symbolize.

Enjoyed this very much! Interesting man! In grade school we were taught some of the history of John Chapman - AKA Johnny Appleseed. And of course we were taught the Johnny Appleseed prayer.

Haven't watched all the way through yet, but, growing up in Ohio, Richland county, Mansfield ( we have a few historic markers)..he was a pretty big local folk hero.

Seems a though there was a story about how some preacher came to town one day talking about how people should be more frugal. I think it culminated into a challenge to anyone who would claim to be more so than he, to which Johnny then marches up and places his foot upon the tree stump the preacher was using for a pulpit and says something like, "here I am!".
Does anyone know that story and can you clean it up for me a bit or elaborate please. ?

Interesting perspective. I didn't notice any negativity. It was a very interesting historical biography on James Chapman - aka Johnny Appleseed.

Yeah, I don't see it either. There's nothing wrong with being eccentric.

I bet nobody ever watches this all the way through... worst public speaker ever. ADD, ADHD, this guy jumps all over the place with so many sidetracks he loses the point and the listener. I bet it’s a detailed read though if it’s actually in some sort of order, unlike this lecture. Dear God man, stay on point and focus!!!

hahaha I haven't watched it, I am going to suggest it to a friend as a joke, because how the HELL can you discuss Johnny Appleseed for over an hour... but this was a real joy to read.
