    Never seen such demonstrations since those clips with Bruce Lee long time ago.
    It's a privilege and an honour to see these authentic moves comming from a Shaolin master.
    The art is there didn't cease to exist.

    Awesome video.. very good basics! It's good to see drills like this to build a strong root and foundation. Usually students hate doing some of the exercises which don't seem like they have anything to do with fighting applications. Like the low duckwalk and bunny hop drills..hehe. But these boring drills really are the basis for a strong body and structure, and prepare a student for the real training. I practice Northern Shaolin forms and have found that they are similar in postures and body structure to these drills. Many of our strikes have a shadow or opposite arm movement which is not just decorative...or fancy posturing like in Wushu.. LOL. The idea of the punch forward with arm extended back or to the side is for a kind of power through leverage not found in other arts. Some practitioners think that the arm left out there is just a block that hasnt been retracted or a clothesline takedown, but it is much more than that.
    Chinese styles have this unique quality of fighting smarter, instead of just harder and faster. Chinese martial arts for the most part, use the body structure to put the whole body behind a strike. Not to mention that many of these moves have an internal side to them, they compress breath and Qi and then expand with the outward movement. Many of these moves seem like they would not work for boxing, but they actually work awesome for breaking out of wrestling holds. This makes sense from understanding that the main hand to hand combat in northern China was against Mongolian wrestling for hundreds of years. Many of the Lohan circular forearm strikes are to break grappling holds and are not just "back hand" fist strikes.
    Also notice when the Sifu shifts stances that it starts with "knee power" and alignment of the foot under the knee first (as when he points to his knee) then the waist and rest of the body shifts. Taoist forms do this too.. a very low stance that shifts with the knees first. The martial arts which copy Shaolin, like Kenpo. TKD and Karate, use Shaolin stances but use them to brace themselves into a static position and think that the power is all in the waist and that is only part of the dynamic. The real power comes from the knees and from striking during the transition of the stance and not from a static braced position. The force of a strike is actually from the stance transition, so you could say that Shaolin doesn't punch with the fist or kick with the foot, for the STANCE is the weapon.
    I think the beauty of most Shaolin and Taoist Masters' forms are a result of many years of sitting in squatting positions, which is a cultural difference from us westerners whom have a difficult time getting low in the stances like that, even with years of stretching. It just doesnt look the same. When I see most westerners like me, try to do Kung fu, their stances are so poor that I think of it as "white guy" kung fu. Kind of a sloppy version with no real stance or root and no body power whatsoever. So it's no wonder when they say Kung fu doesnt work well for them.
    Someone posted a comment saying that there were all these nerdy or strange students in this vid, (I think they are actually meaning intellectual students) I would rather have those students interested in learning all aspects of Shaolin; the taolu, the stretches, the basic strengthening drills, the Qi gong, and the Charn Buddhist teachings, than any meathead MMA type of person who is just there to glean a few techniques. Shaolin is a lifestyle not just a collection of moves.

      @meaningfulmindfulness15 Před 3 lety +5

      You hit the nail on the head brother. I love this whole explanation and I found myself nodding along with everything you've written. Our Sifus would tell us that the stance was key in transitioning our power to our strike. Paying attention to that throughout my training helped me understand my body better while learning other styles. If we can't control our bodies, we have no hope of controlling our opponent.

    I never payed attention to the music. I was so grateful and appreciative of the patient display of technique and mastery, the mark of a true teacher who took the pain to develop his discipline and command of his self. If one lets himself be distracted by music, I don’t think they understand the development of the kind of focus and excellence that one aims to reach here.

      @techenie_donnyh_trav Před 3 lety +1

      "Shi" is like a title all Buddhist monks wear, it means something like "brother". "Heng" is a generational name. Master Yi belongs to the 35th generation of Shaolin monks, hence he has the "Heng" name like the other monks of the 35th gen. The word means "perseverance".
