The way the trains are animated looks really smooth that this gives off the 2000s Disney feel to this short, while being a homage to the Golden Age of Cartoons.
Feels a bit more like the 90s, but I could still see where you're coming from.
You’re right and this should be on Disney+
Ha, from the 90s. It seems that we have 2 children here, this is from the 80s, when Disney made works of art and competed head-to-head with Warner and its animated shorts.
2D animation will never go out of fashion. Nothing is more timeless than an image crafted by human hands.
EXACTLY! Though I could easily say the same thing about 3D, (especially with Pixar and the Mario Movie) the truth still stands.
even in black and white, and unfinished, this short still manages to be incredible
i remember the WIP version. my childhood.

Since you can see some details that you couldn't see before, it truly means that Andrew did a very good job, and even payed attention to detail even in the scenes you cant see it.
Great job, I loved this animation!
As a lover of trains and animation, it's already great enough that you've made this masterpiece of a short film, but now you also release this pencil test! As a young cartoonist who's been recently enjoying watching pencil tests more often these days, I thank you! AI animation could advance as it likes, but (in the same way that Linus could never be useless) no such piece of newfangled technology could ever truly replace the craft of beautifully human-made animation.
Edit: Thank you very much, Mr. Chesworth, for liking my comment.
Train-tastic!
I rather say STEAMTASTIC!
Nice chuggington reference
@@Yourlocalsudricboi1215 No. That show stole that line from line from me.
This whole film oozes with such 2000s Disney nostalgia and I love it to no end. I can't help but have Samson's theme stuck in my head all the time. X)
This just shows how much work Andrew has put into this project I love it
Sampson's theme would be a great jazz toon. it'd be super cool if it was extended to be a full song
I like how there’s different versions of the end credits. The original has ones that look like concept art. While this one has actually shots of the episode.
So impressive! MAN I envy people who can clean up
I like this version because it shows you stuff that you probably didn’t notice in the original.

I find it sad how Samson looks back sadly to see Linus exploded
I wonder if that Streamliner at 6:03 is another member of Samson’s class. It has the same wheel design and arrangement.
I think so too. Plus, the streamlining on that locomotive is inspired by Chesapeake & Ohio 490.
But c&o 490 is a hudson, not a northern @@d-fender4489
@@d-fender4489 I would honestly like to see a sequel or spin off featuring that streamliner one day.
The streamlining was indeed done right over Samson's model!
@@achesworth Cool!
I really love the animation style that takes back of the rubber hose 1930s with the classic Walt Disney animation style that came out in the 40s and 50s
Greetings from Japan
Wow looks cool even pencil style.....cool Andrew.....the cast and crew deserves the accolades😊🎉❤
transparent world looks so good! 👍
STILL so beautiful. The smoothness ❤
Absolutely outstanding on how much work and effort and time and love and blood and sweat and tears went into this film you guys are incredible this film is incredible
Great job
WAIT - I remember seeing WIPs of the trains being 3D modelled? I assumed they were rendered as such but with this does that mean they were just used as a guide and then rotoscoped with the pencil brush?
Or is there a way to render it with just the outline. Either way it’s still impressive.
Would love to see a breakdown video
Will we ever get a instrumental of all the songs? there all really amazing!
Interesting, I got to see some details i didn't catch with the other version, like the Logging cars at 2:39
The Logging Locos
Toot-tastic! But what about the old version of it? And the storyboard version?
The old version only ever existed as storyboards with the rough opening sequence. A complete storyboard version is coming!
@@achesworth Oh, really? I can't wait!
Hey Andrew, do you know that Samson is based off a timken 1111 4-8-4 steam locomotive?
Que Bien Andrew Chesworth ;)
Anyway, even though Linus is outdated, "it is (still) a really useful engine"
The Brave Locomotive: Behind The Scenes/ Director's Cut
thx
I like this versión, Its very creative
I remember the unfinished one that Linus and railcars have buffers and realistic and that’s my childhood when I’m a little kid
Truly inspirational! Love the effort you put into it!
I like how the end credits are basically some of the storyboards
I’m very proud with the effort that went into this film!
I wasent expecting this to come out.
But it’s so cool to see how this sorta thing works
Nice Video Andrew Chesworth! Try the storyboards test version of the brave locomotive. 6:23-6:27-6:53-6:59-7:01
This requires a small series I don’t care how long it takes I will wait for 30 years this just needs a series
Train-tastic Andrew love it :)
Wow! Now details that have never been seen can be seen! And it would be wonderful to see some more of the original story board!
Nice test, it is like a black & white cartoon
Im impressed that it took 8 years since the opening trailer, then 13 years since the wild west. [Claps at your achievement]
YESSSSSSS I LOVE PENCIL TESTS LET'S GOOOOO thank you for showing us this!
this one just shows me the amount of detail in sampson, amazing!
i feel like this is just the GCI models and animation just transperent
because i remember that henry was much choppier and crude when linus comes into the station

BC Rail #4619 Horn

This is some amazing artwork.
Congrats on all the hard work you all did on this😊🎉....looks cool even pencil style❤!
Awesome work once again!
Nice job Andrew!
Nostalgia keeps hitting me when I see this.
wow in this way samson looks alot more detailed then he does in the finshed version
Absolutely fantastic.
This is so good I can’t even describe it
Dang this is just wow he just drew this for us
Beautiful! I have to note that the train station is in Colonnaville...the Disney cartoon The Brave Engineer (Casey Jones) was narrated/sung by the great Jerry Colonna! Nice reference!
were there any 3d involved in the train drawings? They seem to be hand drawn which is so refreshing to see.
The trains are 3D models animated and rendered to look like 2D drawings! Sometimes Linus' face is hand-drawn on top for very specific expressions and moments.
when i saw the finished version, i thought linus, samson, and all other trains were 3D models, turn out i was wrong. Edit: also, in the final, i dont remember linus being blown in half. i thought it was just his smockskack that gat broke ( my spelling sucks)
TBH, I've always been very sure that Samson is a cel shaded CGI character. In fact, interestingly enough, Mr. Chesworth himself already replied to a relevant comment right below yours, confirming this. (Not saying that it should've been obvious to you. Just pointing out a funny coincidence.) In fact, according to him, all locomotives and rolling stock, including Linus, have been animated using cel shaded cgi at one point or another. Not trying to be rude or anything. Just a friendly reminder.
@@sericsmith5770 thank you for this info, when i saw this i thoght the trains were animated not 3d.
The behind the scenes
Thanks for this.
Nice I like both in color and pencil sketch
I'm actually surprised that there's pencil tests of Linus and Samson, I legit could have sworn they were completely CG. I am always continuously impressed by traditional animation whenever I witness it.
Edit: Actually, are they still CG? Their lines look a bit cleaner than the other characters.
That's right! They're CG but animated and rendered to look 2D!
amazing!
You should really do a sequel with Linus meeting a diesel train or something
Yeah! Perhaps something like a tomboyish Burlington Zephyr, or maybe just a big burly Baldwin Sharknose diesel, or even both? I don't know, but I admire the amount of possibilities this may bring! In fact, I even have an idea that, if possible, could expand this railway universe:
What if there was a television show based on The Brave Locomotive? This could even lead to an entire franchise being built from the ground up, and considering the rise of the indie animation industry, (which is much needed due to David Zaslav's oppression of animation, as well as Disney's own failures, and the eerie rise of AI) I wouldn't be surprised if such an idea would prove to be successful in this day and age. (If I'm correct) This is probably the perfect timing!
Nice job Andrew
So fluid😮😮😮
0:35 is the part from the original teaser a few years ago! really neat seeing the process behind this animation!
Why don't you make the "The Brave Locomotive 2"? or you shere the original 2015 TBL?
instant classic, well done all of you
Poor Linus
where's the love icon?! what a beauty
I am your new subscriber
I love it
Hey Andrew when is the second film coming out?
IT'S LIKE DISNEY BUT 1000% BETTER!!!
TBL IN THE YEAR 1905
amazing
Somehow it just doesn't feel the same to see Linus without the buffers
Did this short film win any awards
I feel bad for the guys who had to animate the rods on the wheels
any chance there might be other projects come down the line in time(pun intended)
What year does this whole film take place? Because I was doing some numbers, and I found out that Linus could possibly be close to 170 years old, does anyone have any guesses?
The film is set in 1895, but Samson is a prototype over two decades ahead of his time. Linus is meant to be from the 1850s.
@@achesworth No way this could've been in 1895!?!?!? Samson looks like he's straight out of the late 20s, 30s and 40s! I didn't even think that this was meant to take place in a specific time period! Interesting!
when were the northern wheel arranged locomotives built again?
Nice
Noice
I got question Mr chesworth what gave you and the team the idea of removing the buffers on Linus was it to make him more American or something just curious 🧐 btw love this short so much
Hi
4:53 yeah that makes sense
Fantastic ❤❤
Classic Disney vibes.
Ah yep this one
Hello 👋
Can you do 100% instrumental version of this, please?
6:54 I don’t know why this is creepy as hell
Nice though
Just asking what happened to Samson did like scrap?
what if it is the color storyboard version 🤔
E
I saw every thing of them
When is the soundtrack and songs coming
Era muy diferente el final
