He is/was very humble and has always respected anyone that has respected him and has always shown lots of respect to the very best or greatest rappers. His whole rock n roll hall of fame speech was naming almost everyone that came before him and got him to that point. He actually says, 'they should be here instead of me'. He gives them respect and recognition. Does so also with most of his songs references rapper's, groups, albums, songs most people don't even realise it is happening because he just blends it in seamlessly.

Fun fact, Jay-Z sat on Eminem's verse for about a year before the song "Renegade" went live. Eminem originally recorded his verses and the beat for another collaboration with Royce da 5'9" in 2000. Jay-Z later approached Eminem to use the song for his album, and Eminem agreed, re-recording his verses for the new version. The song was eventually released on Jay-Z's album "The Blueprint" in September 2001.

The color thing is hilarious. They're so desperate to make Jay-Z's rhyme schemes far more complex than they are, when many are just random syllables. You can do the same thing with any regular conversation. You can do it with Crypt's commentary about this song, or my comment right now. Find every word with a similar vowel sound and make it one color. That's not rhyming, it's just speaking a language that only has five base vowels, so of course many words will "rhyme."
Em's verse is light years ahead of Jay's verse, and this song was peak Jay lyricism btw. He was never better than this.

Jay Z’s delivery is terrible to me. But his penmanship is great though. But even with a better delivery, Eminem would still be better to me. But it all depends on the person because they both have different upbringings that relate to different people. I heard Jay Z a lot growing up, more than I did Eminem, and I just couldn’t get into him. I only got into Eminem mainly in high school back in like 2009-13 but only with a few songs. Jay Z has never made it onto my playlist… even Lil Wayne was on my playlist with Milli and Make It Rain and even then I wasn’t much of a fan of him either. Specifically due to the way he sounded. I think it’s a matter of personal preference what the order is, honestly. My top 5 is black thought, Eminem, Nas, Jay, Royce Da 5’9”. While I don’t expect Royce or Thought to be in most average listener’s top 5, the other 3 I do. At that point the placement in the top 5 is the respect they deserve and the order is preference.
However, when an organization like Billboard creates a list they try to make it seem like it is objective and stated fact. I have zero issue with any rapper in that top 5 stating they should be number 1 and being competitive with the others in their pursuit of proving it. That is why I love what Eminem said.

i think nas saying jay got washed by em was playing up a little for the dis, cut the man where it hurts. but because it was said on a winning dis, people took it as fact without really diving in to question it. def closer than nas said, but i don't think jay was quite on par with em. no one really is.

I’ve never felt Jay-Z was washed. I felt it was ALWAYS a battle of equals. I know I’m in the minority with that thought, but I still feel that way. I’m a Brooklyn boy, so I identify with what Jay talks about. I’m also a fan of lyricism, so I can completely understand how people feel that Em had the better verses.
However, I think it was a special song because it’s also the only feature on The Blueprint. The battle of the gods put on display for the world to see. Just my two cents.

Royce and Crooked I are only rappers who can be shoulder to shoulder with Em... Sometimes even outrap him... Royce has that incredible skill to rhyme with one syllable, than switch to another, than after 1-2 lines he switch back but also he change speed at the same time.... He start verse and u never know where he will go, its like he opens up few paths and than through out the song he chose one , than another, than another..... one of good examples is line with "bank job" in song Above The Law...

Every time I listen to this I get hyped. I go in knowing I liked em's verse better then I hear Jay's and I'm like hold on, he killed this is em's verse really that much better?
With verses that are more memorable and easily repeat.
"I got nothing to do but make you look stupid as parents.
Fucking do gooder, to bad you couldn't do good at marriage!"
    Or
"The new ice cube mother fuckers hate to like you. What did I do?
Again easy to repeat, sounds so good and hard coming off the tongue and it's relatable for a bunch of misfits on top of that.
Whoever won in anyone's eye the one thing nobody can deny is this is definitely one of hip hop's best song ever created.

I think of this as the Ronaldo/Messi debate. Sure, you can prefer how one plays football, or argue about most awards, most goals, most assists, most impact in important games etc. But this song is like those two put up against each other, and one of them does the performance of his life, yet the other guy just outshines him on the spot.
All this to say, Jay Z's verse is incredible. It's so great. Maybe my favourite Jay Z song of all time. And Eminem's verse is just significantly better on all accounts.
Eminem's verse gets a lot of credit for sure, but I think sometimes it's underrated because people don't realize just how good Jay Z is on this song.
