What makes this song so good is how Jay Z and Em come from two different backgrounds but were able to intertwine them in their verses
Jay Z dealing with a rough upbringing in life and his music is a product of it. While Em is dealing with the public’s perception of his music since he was the center of all the controversy in Hip Hop. But it all ties together where they both stay true to what they are no matter what others say.

Fun Fact: Eminem produced this beat. This was on Jay Z album “The Blueprint” from 2001
Another fun fact: There’s an original version of this song with Eminem and Royce Da 59 (dope rapper too). Jay heard of this and wanted to be on it and Em told Royce about it. Royce was taken off new version but he didn’t care cause he thought it would’ve made a song a bigger hit

I also think that Royce didn't have time to record the verse because he was touring. I am not 100% on that because it's been a while since I've seen the video but I think that's what happened. Might have been in the Crook interview/podcast with Royce. He also thought that yeah it was going to be a bigger hit with that so Royce gave the "permission" to give it to Hove, I also think there were other people that were in the list to rap it. That I'm definitely not sure on but I think so.

Jay Z had the haymakers. Slow, powerful, deep rhymes. Poetic Hooks..

2 different styles combined for an instant classic.

They both were also dirt poor but Em didn’t want to talk about himself being poor, considering Jay Z is already talking about that struggle life and Em knew it’d be smart and ideal to rap about him being labeled as this “role model” that’s supposed to do everything perfect because, like you said, at the time he was the person that the media would blame for everything. So, it compliments Jay’s verse so well. It’s like, “I came from shit, and had to deal the cards I was dealt (Jay), and here y’all are trying to cancel me for me being me and holding me to a standard to be your perfect role model. (Em)”. Both verses are just so clean and compliments each other so well.

He is amazing at the annuciation and is able to hit certain syllables with the beat, with the superb annucaiation he is able to from his own percussion over the beat but it's also on time with the beat in the instrumental. When he raps fast like in Rap God, World Wide Choppers Pt. 2, Godzilla, Lucky You, etc. you can understand and hear every single word. No one can beat him in that. If you look at The Ringer when he goes on a 13 bar spit fest without taking a breath and that is a good example of the percussion aspect because he's hitting in just the right place and you don't even notice the beat in the back. Another example is Not Alike, when he starts with "Sold Dre my soul ...* and ends with "And I double-edge sworded 'cause one place
I poke and I stick and I turn and I rotating motion". The beat slightly fades away and we see Em being essentially the metronome and the percussion just with his syllable punches!

My one request would be- Black Thought freestyles on flex. It's about 10 min so it's fairly long but definitely worth a listen. If you guys have the time it would be cool.

Jay gets shit for Em "killing him on his own track" but Jay's verses are amazing. They really are phenomenal verses that only a handful of artists could even compete with. Em just wound up dropping the verse of his career, if you don't consider it Ems greatest verse, it's at least in the discussion.
