I was into jazz and jazz-fusion before rock and metal, and Japan is in the forefront of those genres, with an especially deep reservoir of female talent. They're covering the Average White Band tune here, apparently channeling Candy Dulfer (going by the original vdo description). I've seen the Jazz Avengers several times live, the individual members any number of times live, and am personally acquainted with the guitarist Chizuru Segawa and saxophonist Ami Nakazono. Bassist Juna Serita was Tamu's bandmate in Soramimi. Saxophonist WaKaNa went to the same music school as Mayu and Haraguchi-san of Nemophila. The driving force of this band, literally, is drummer Senri Kawaguchi. Most of these players have worked with others in the band in different combinations on the club circuit and in session and studio work. This band is just the tip of the iceberg as far as Japan's jazz/jazz-fusion talent goes, but it's a mighty fine tip.

For those who did not know: This band was originally known as "Senri's Seven", a team originally pulled together by the drummer, Senri Kawaguchi, who is beyond brilliant. The group was asked by the One Young World organization to represent the nation of Japan at their global 'handoff' from Germany in 2022. To say they were successful is an understatement, and after the OYW performance they were christened "The Jazz Avengers" and went on a quick 'tour' in Japan in September 2022. Fans raised their collective voice to demand more.
The ladies pulled together to create their first album, which was released in April 2023 to RAVE reviews. Each member of the group composed at least one of the songs, and all of them are superb. The tour that followed the release had audiences demanding multiple encores as the ladies brought their combined talents to share massive love and joy with their fans.
Each of them is a star in their own right, with 'solo' albums to their credit. SO. MUCH. TALENT.

Check out their As You Like and Top Me Up. Also Ami Nakazono (the soprano players) playing Hairy Crab with the band Kiyo-Sen (which is Senri Kawaguchi (the drummer) and Kiyomi Otaka). Also anything by Miku Yonezawa (tenor sax). If you like fusion go for Kiyo-Sen. Love your analysis.

That drum solo, oh well that came from the much respected composer /drummer who has jammed with top notch drummer/ sessionist Marco Minnemann and played for guitarist extraordinaire Guthrie Govan. Go check out Senri Kawaguchi, she has an extensive repertoire of performance videos. And her control of time signature dynamics is exquisite and impeccable. Could at anytime be compatible to perform to the likes of Herbie Hancock or the late Chick Corea. As usual, musicians coming from japan are formally trained and thus are music theory proponents, that makes them very highly technical, but relaxed in execution.

They have their first album coming up on April 26th and are planning a tour for that album, at least one of them (May 27th) is streamed and tickets are for sale on twtcstng.
They might do more that are streamed, but that's at least one I could find.
I have bought solo albums by the majority of these players over the last couple of months (I only miss the keyboard player) and all of them are good to absolutely fantastic. I am still partial to drummer Senri Kawaguchi, but I have listened to her from even before I started my whole Japanese rock/metal journey. I also really like bassist Juna Serita and Sax players Miku Yonezawa (Tenor Sax) and Ami Nakazono (Soprano Sax).
But honestly, all of them are really good and worth checking out. I have watched a couple of live shows with some of them (or together as the Jazz Avengers) and they are all top-tier musicians. Also, the guitar player Chizuru Segawa always has this huge smile on her face, which is just great to see.
    Edit:
Some more info on who is who (order off of their website):
    - Senri Kawaguchi (Drums) - Also in Kiyo*Sen. As a side note, she was ranked in the drummerworld drummer top 500 when she was only 13 years old.
    - Chizuru Segawa (Guitar)
    - Marie Takeda (Piano/Keyboards) - Also in The Pigeonz and Le Grand Retour (but I have never personally heard those)
    - Juna Serita (Bass) - Also in Muses, Addone (new duo with a youtube guitar player), used to be in Tokyo Groove Jyoshi. Played with Murata Tamu in the J-pop band Soramimi.
    - Miku Yonezawa (Tenos Sax)
    - Miho Terachi (Alto Sax, on the left of the screen, stage right)
    - WaKaNa (Alto Sax, right sidde of the screen, stage left)
    - Ami Nakazono (Soprano Sax)
All of them have their solo stuff as well, with the exception of maybe Marie Takeda (not sure). Some of them have youtube channels: Senri Kawaguchi, Juna Serita, Miho Terachi and WaKaNa.
So this is basically a supergroup of amazing female Jazz musicians with all of them doing solo concerts as well. I believe it originally started out as "Senri's Seven" as a one-off project a couple of years ago, but just like with Nemophila it clearly stuck.

      Tiny fix: Senri Kawaguchi
But I agree, she is one of my favourite drummers and probably number 1.
I watched a live set today that she did with Rie a.k.a. Suzaku, the current bassist of Tokyo Groove Jyoshi and the keyboardplayer of the set with Murata Tamu that Glass Moon Gaming likes to check out and they played a whole range of things from more metal to Jazz Fusion and Senri blew me away. I haven't heard her do a lot of stuff more in the metal realm. The set is actually still on twtcstng, it is called Suzaku Instrumental Summit 35. Rie a.k.a Suzaku does those regularly and Senri used to play on her albums (Kanade Sato does nowadays).

@@MaartenT The first time Senri Kawaguchi shared the bandstand with Rie aka Suzaku was in 2013 when Senri was part of an all-girl unit backing guitarist Isao (best known outside Japan as a member of Babymetal's Kami Band). Rie was touring off her just-released album "Kingdom of the Sun", double-billed with Isao, and performed with him. This was some months after Senri's first album "A La Mode" was released. The music was a mix of jazz-fusion, rock, metal. Which is to say, Senri has certainly played metal before.

      Thanks for the info!
I knew Senri had played before with Rie aka Suzaku on her albums and possibly live, but I had never seen or heard it myself.
I don't own any of the Rie aka Suzaku albums, only a very shoddy DVD of "Instrumental Summit Vol.24 Ladies Night" and that one has Kanade Sato on drums.
I have also watched a couple of livestreamed concerts with Rie aka Suzaku over the last 2 years (mainly Muses though), but (almost?) all of those were with Kanade Sato as well, who is an other great Jazz drummer who can play whatever she wants. I expected that Senri would probably be able to play any style she wants as well, but I loved how much fun she seemed to be having while playing something different for a change. They also played a couple of Senri tracks (maybe one was Kiyo*Sen, I know I recognized both tracks but both projects sometimes flow together for me). It's the 10th anniversary of Senri's "A La Mode" album this year, so it makes sense for them to be from that album and she had the Jazz Avengers CD to plug.
So it wasn't necessarily a surprise, but more an observation how comfortable she looked that blew me away. Even though some of her Fusion tracks certainly have rock and metal influences (like using the double bass pedal).

@@MaartenT Mixing of genres is common in Japan. The best I have ever heard Saki of Nemophila play live in a club setting is two gigs with a jazz trio in 2019. I got into Babymetal through the club gigs of the Kami Band members, and they played sets of covers of jazz, rock, and metal tunes.
Jazz-fusion drummers, such as Billy Cobham, used double bass pedals/drums in the 1970s. As far as influences go, I think metal and instrumental rock were hugely influenced by the jazz-fusion bands of the 1970s.

I have bought the albums of the Kari band a while ago and it is for sure Jazz like you said, they are incredible musicians even though I am not always in the mood for it.
I have also noticed that a lot of Japanese bands tend to mix multiple genres into their rock and metal even when just playing with their own band and it makes sense that they have influences from the Jazz scene with how big that scene seems to be in Japan. It is one of the reasons why I find the Japanese scene so interesting and why I keep coming back to different bands after discovering Band-Maid about 2 years ago.
