The guitarist is Chizuru Segawa, who you might of seen before on some of the Naon Yaon videos. She is a well established guitarist who has been involved with many projects.

I don't know her well, but she seems extremely happy every time I see her play with them. She is basically jumping around in this one.
She seems to have so much fun while playing.

She also appears on a video playing with Tokyo Groove Jyoshi which Juna Serita was in before.

They were formed in 2021 by Senri for the closing ceremony of the "One Young World" Convention in Munich. Germany under the name "Senris Seven" in preparation for the conventions move to Tokyo in 2022, they stayed together and changed the name to "Jazz Avengers".

Hey Wave! I used to play sax, years ago. You can actually bend notes with a sax without using keys by tightening or loosening the embouchure (sort of the grip your mouth has on the mouthpiece). On some lower notes you can raise an octave without hitting the octave key by tightening the embouchure and using breath control to your advantage. There are some tricks to using keys to help with bending, but mostly it's just breath control and embouchure. The E-flat alto sax can get up to an F-# an octave above the top line in the treble clef music scale which is about equivalent to about the natural "D" on a piano above the treble clef scale, if I remember my music theory correctly. Altissimo register is a whole other ball game, you need to use a much tighter embouchure, special fingerings, and push a whole lot of air really fast to hit anything above a high F# on a sax. I couldn't see for certain, but it looked like she went to either a high "F" or possibly an "F#." I think she might have tried to go into altissimo once and didn't quite make it, but it might have been that her teeth hit the reed, which can cause a squeak. Please take care and have a great night!

Wave, haven't commented much lately; but these are MY ladies, so I had to jump in. Firstly, this song was composed by WaKaNa, the alto sax player 'featured' in this clip. She is awesome, and best known for her 'smooth jazz' work (it is dreamy). I watched the online archives of all three of the shows on this 'tour' the ladies did in September in Japan, and I have never seen so much love and emotion coming from a stage. The ladies were really 'on it', and the shows featured 'originals' by each of the four 'saxy ladies'. That piece with the Senri solo was a magnificent, almost classical piece composed by Miku Yonezawa - the Tenor player. It's called 'Glacial Winds'. Check it out.

In her solo: Wa Ka Na; She quotes Earth, Wind & Fire's song: September several times and riffs off it. Wa Ka Na is Miku Yonezawa's sempai or senior, they went to the same music conservatory.

If you want some more great Senri drumming check out Maybe I Know by the Jazz Avengers, some great sax duels to and Juna getting her funk on. These girls are basically a supergroup collective as each one of them was already very well known. Senri picked well.

  • @michaelmunno

re: the sax playing, while the buttons control the air flow along the length of the sax, there is a LOT that is done by the tongue and breath on the reed itself (the reed is thin and wooden and in the mouth piece) it is the key to all the amazing dynamics of the saxophone. I grew up playing Piano, Alto Sax and Tenor Sax. I absolutely love Miku here (the tenor sax player who is standing close to Juna) Miku is at least as famous as Juna and Senri in the Japanese Jazz scene. she has a few albums out. Check out her song Tenor Hunter. I am really excited about The Jazz Avengers, these ladies have a great chemistry. I wish I could roll my Rs (that's how she got the distortion and flutter you mentioned) when I knew I could not roll my Rs, I decided I was not going to be a pro sax player. I loved playing Jazz and Dixie.

I love how I can just copy/paste some of my Band-Maid comments.
Miku is so cute 😍, Drummer is ridiculous, wouldn't want to mess with the bassist.
After I heard this group perform for the first time... I thought "Oh, I guess I like smooth jazz", a whole new genre to love.

    • @MaartenT
      @MaartenT Před rokem +1

I have recently bought a couple albums by 3 of the saxophonists (Miku Yonezawa, Ami Nakazono and WaKaNa) and while Ami and WaKaNa are more smooth jazz, I actually prefer Miku's album which can get kind of crazy at times. I'm not at all a big jazz fan either, although I have some moments each year that I start to listen to Jazz (the exception is Senri, I listen to her stuff regularly). I did listen to Senri before discovering Band-Maid and all the other Japanese bands I have disovered after that.
I also noticed I already knew Ami and Miku from a couple of performances with Senri that are floating on youtube. I remember really liking those as well when I checked them out.
I just never really checked out the other members and I didn't even recognize Miku's name any more.
I also bought a couple of Juna Serita's albums, but I have to wait on those because of a pre-order I placed with those.
I recently watched a Juna Serita live show and she actually plays a little sax as well, which I didn't know (not as well was these 4 do, but it certainly wasn't bad).
Really looking forward to more music by the Jazz Avengers and I am possibly going to try and check out material by the remaining members that I haven't checked out yet.

Yes, I know. I have pre-ordered it already.
Thanks for letting me know though, things like this are very easy to miss.
I also noticed they are at least doing one performance that is streamed on a site that people outside of Japan can watch on May 27nd.
I am hesitant on putting the name of the site here because I know it usually makes youtube removes my comment. But it looks a little like a very know microblogging website.
I will just put it in a new reply and you will probably get it in your mailbox before it gets removed (I hope).

More joyful music joyfully played by Japanese women. The well seems bottomless
Senri was my "gateway drug" to the entire Japanese scene when , a couple of years ago, facefook suggested a Drumeo video featuring her. I can draw a direct line from her through Kanade, Yoyoka, and eventually to Akane and beyond (mostly via drum teacher/reactors)

Mine was Juna Serita's Princess of Funk video. I kept seeing it in my recommendations and decided to give it a watch. Got hooked. The drummer is MiMi who is Tokyo Groove Jyoshi's now drummer. The tenor sax player is Harumo Imai who is a lot of Tokyo Groove Jyoshi's videos plus she has her things going.

And. Hey Wave. Here is Senri anchoring the Tokyo Blue Note Jazz Allstars. The premier and best of the best in Japan. In the back row Erik Miyashiro (long white hair) on trumpet, one of the best in the world. Leading the band is Masato Hondo, the premier alto in Japan. Standing next to him is a teenage girl, Luna Watanabe. Trading leads with the maestro - she is literally matching notes with one of the greats, in a band with the top jazz musicians in Japan (or for that matter, anywhere). And Kawaguchi is the regular drummer, holding down that spot for the past few years, since graduating from the university (she majored in social studies from one of the top schools in Japan, Waseda). czcams.com/video/C19WWn6aMP8/video.html

Hey. Here is Senri Kawaguchi, playing with Miku Yonezawa. Miku is the tenor sax player with Senri's 7. Typically sh is in the right hand side next to the bassist Juna Serita. I've seen her perform in Japan, small clubs, may 50 seats at the most. She burns the house down everytime. Anyway, Kawaguchi and Yonezawa, a fantastic piece: czcams.com/video/p93pzxr_JRE/video.html

      czcams.com/video/hnnZMnRbKkI/video.html
I had no clue who both of the sax players were back then, but I remember being impressed by them. Seeing them together as the Jazz Avengers made me look into them more (that goes for all the members). It amazes me how good each members is at their instrument, I mainly knew Senri and Juna before divining into The Jazz Avengers even though I did see Miku and Ami before Juna.
I don't know jazz that well, but I did buy albums by most of the members now. Miku Yonezawa's "Exotic Gravity" is probably my favourite, probably with the exception of the Senri ones.
I apparently love the sound of a tenor sax.

Nice review. Pretty sure that slide you were talking about has to due with the reed and the pressure you an apply to it with your mouth (lips).. On a brass instrument (trumpet, etc), you can slide into a new note using the keys and your breath.
