I believe I started being a perfectionist when I was extremely young due to my upbringing. I've worked on it in a lot of ways over my lifetime. When I came back to watercolor last year (hadn't done it for 25+ years) I noticed that I felt less freedom than when I was younger. It's wonderful to actually learn things but it also made me overthink. So recently I started "painting without thinking," I try to do this for a short session each morning first thing. I got the idea from the morning pages from The Artist's Way. (I can also paint WITH thinking at other times.) Anyway it's all about process and the experience of painting, not the result. But as you might imagine, the best paintings I have done were the ones where I truly cared least about the results and was just experimenting.
Glad I found your channel and I'm looking forward to more videos :-)

Hey, Jenn! Hope you're doing well today. :) Part of your comment reminded me of the phrase "The more you know, the more you realize you don't know." I've felt this, too, as I've continued on my art journey.
The more you learn about art, the more mistakes you see in your work and the more topics you find out you have to learn about in order to keep improving.
But it is a never-ending thing, as even the most amazing, most skilled artists who've been at it for a while are still looking for ways to improve.
There is no finish line. So why stress ourselves out and why not enjoy the process? 😉
Isn't that what life is about, anyway?
I loved what you mentioned about how your best paintings are the ones that were a result of you having a good time. I think this always shows in our work.
Thanks so much for watching and taking time to leave your valuable comment. Wish you a lovely day and tons of enjoyment in your art journey.

@@ErikaLancasterArt the reference links you left and mentioned in this were also just 🤯
For 2 years I’ve been looking for a searchable name to help dig out the root cause / hidden self talk, behind this weird total freeze response I always get - when super excited by a creative idea - that i really feel passionate about pursuing, and genuinely WANT to do.
Because that’s not standard ADHD or just task avoidance, but it sure does intersect with it.
Perfectionism Paralysis - Perfectionism Paralysis - Perfectionism Paralysis - OMG. Of course.
And there’s my schitt childhood whispering in my ear, at the end of the road where the seed was planted.
      Can’t thank you enough. 💝✨
