  • One of the longest, uninterrupted religious practices comes from the land down under, where many of the indigenous peoples of Aboriginal Australia told stories of the Rainbow Serpent. Called various names and under many identities, the Rainbow Serpent is a nature deity, credited with the creation of much of the life and landscape of the Australian outback. But just as it could be a benefactor, it could turn violent in a flash should it be angered. This program will dive into the details of the Rainbow Serpent, and retell a handful of its stories from the Dreamtime!
MYTHOLOGY HAS BEEN TOLD AND RETOLD IN MANY FORMS ACROSS TIME, STORIES AND ACCOUNTS MAY VARY.

I'm a central Australian indigenous man from the Alyawarr & Arrernte tribes, I grew up on Dreamtime stories from my family, learning about the rainbow serpent or Kurrernarr in my father's language. I wouldn't say we believe the rainbow serpent is a god the same way other belief systems and religion's believe in their god's although some tribes of Aus may disagree with me, for the most part we revere the Kurrernarr as the most powerful spirit and a sort of guardian of laws and sacred sites also of both the natural & supernatural worlds. We believe that there are many, that they can reproduce and create more, each tribe has their own though some are shared between tribes and clan groups. We believe that they created and gave birth to most of what we see, they can control the weather and the seasons, they are known for their wisdom, sense of justice and power.
Thank you for making this ❤️

I am Australian but not indigenous. About 12 years ago I participated in an ayahuasca ceremony outside of Geelong. I had absolutely no idea what I might experience. Once my journey began, I felt thousands of eyes looking at me from within the scales of a large serpent that was rainbow coloured but like neon lights... then it became apparent to me that the serpent was everything; that we are all part of this one huge rainbow serpent. I felt that I was very much part of it. It seemed to me that we are all spiritually connected by this one infinite serpent. I felt a strong sense of love in my heart from the serpent and cried tears of joy. It was a beautiful and moving experience enhanced by the fact that the shaman had begun to pay the didgeridoo (my serpent experience had already begun before he played). I wonder if indigenous Australians had had similar experiences during altered states during corroboree/dance etc that might have inspired the rainbow serpent mythology.

I'm a murrie from nth Qld and I had a dream about the rainbow serpent a year ago now.
In the dream I was standing at the edge of a a river that I used to swim in as a kid.
This river is where the freshwater would come down from the hills and run off into the sea.
In the dream I was trying to see the bottom of the river because the water is so clear but then I had this urge to look up river as I felt as if I was being watched.
I could sense something floating on the water towards me but i just ignored it.
That's when I saw a big black snake head pass in front of me in the water..
And as it passed I realised I was looking at a big black snake, and looked up river to realise his tail was so far up that it was still coming down.
I was close enough to see the faint colours of the rainbow.
It was the biggest snake I've ever saw and It was so scary. My body just froze in fear...
While it swam passed I called for other to come and see 'the rainbow serpent ' I yelled and that's when it shot up out of the water. It moved so fast and it was screeching so loud and splashing water everywhere I thought to myself this can't be real....it had it's body on the beach and its head was towering over 7 metres high in the sky. and that when it turned to look at me. It was terrifying...there were other people who saw this and we all ran away to hide in a near by house.
Then he started to come closer to the house peering in at us through the windows . Like this creature was toying around with us.
I was trembling and shaking and felt as if couldn't stand up. I was just hoping it wouldn't hurt us.
I couldn't bring myself to look at it cause I felt if it looked at me I would just die of fright.
I found this all strange as I never really paid attention to any Dreamtime or rainbow serpent stories.
Anyways after the dream I was very confused at first because I didn't understand what the dream meant and also I didn't know if the rainbow serpent was good or evil.
Initially I thought he was good but have come to realise he is evil. Also as a believer in Jesus and what snakes symbolises in the bible and who identifies with this animal it's clear he isn't for good but evil also I'm not surprised you encountered this entity while doing drugs.

Thank you so much!! I love the stories of the dream time; there are so many different tales! This wide brown land of ours Down under, was once home to incredible Mega Fauna (Stories of Gigantic Lizards and snakes living in remote places still persist to this day) so there could be some truth behind the legend of the Rainbow Serpent. I've traveled all over Western Australia and the Northern Territory. There certainly are plenty of rivers and gorges that look like a huge snake could have made them. As for the frogs holding the water: Legend tells of when the frogs all start croaking before a rain storm, they are singing the rain down from the sky.

    What an amazing tales!
It made me think that the Rainbow Serpent might be a real life actual creature from Prehistoric Time, and all the aboriginals are passing a memory from their ancestors that seen this thing from an age-old forgotten era.
You have to be remember that Australia is also inhabited not only by tons of toxic and poisonous animals but gargantuan creatures such as Diprotodon, largest known 'marsupial' and Megalania, considered as the largest terrestrial lizard and 3-4 times bigger than the modern Komodo Dragon.
So it's not out of the possibility that the Rainbow Serpent exist in a time where the Aboriginals were living in a land of prehistoric animals around. There should be a fossil of this gigantic snake but Australia is a big place and there still many areas to this island continent that haven't yet explored or dig up by expertise.

    • @huonsmith
      @huonsmith Před 3 lety +5

While aboriginals have been around for quite some time, by no means would they have seen anything from prehistoric times. I doubt very much that the rainbow serpent was based on a real life serpent of similar size. As mentioned in the video, it was probably inspired by some australian snakes in general rather than a gargantuan ancient snake

There was actually a big constrictor snake in Australia at the time when humans first arrived there in the Late Pleistocene. It's called Wonambi naracoortensis and was 5 to 6 meters long. It was however unrelated to pythons and boas we know today and was instead the last member of a different family - Madsoiidae. It went extinct around 50 thousand years ago. The people who discovered it apparently made the connection with the serpent from the aboriginal mythology because the genus name they gave it - Wonambi is actually one of the regional names of the Rainbow Serpent

I had a vision of a rainbow serpent he was absolutely GORGEOUS, the most of his body was white but on his back was diamond shape rainbow colors on it. Then a couple of months later i went to prison for 7 months. I was sitting in my cell and out of nowhere i felt something on my foot but when i looked down there were nothing there but i could still feel it. I came to realise that it was a snake rubbing his head against my foot, it was all nothing but love that i felt from him. Beautiful

He revolve in one year and roost every three months, thunderous is his cough, rainfall is his saliva, whirlwind is his breath, giant stones are his bone and the vast earth is his flesh. He reside in the place of rising sun and setting moon, where the star fall. He who bring the first fire. And my country is just above of Australia maybe a bit to the west.

If you zoom down near Queensland northern territory border you'll see feather striations on the landscape. Uluru Ayers Rock could have been it's heart. A winged serpent Phoenix thunderbird creature spanning two thirds of the continent. WOW! Amazing incredible check it out.

Ok here is one that may be tied. This is a passage from a tale my great grandma told me.
“Then the people hid ancestors in the ground and poured stones and dirt to hide them, to fool the great snake into leaving the ancestors to toil.”
Water reference? The great snake touches every continent in the form of rivers? It can kill and devour all in its path? Or is it referring to longer glacial rivers? I have a feeling when water hit the flatter areas of Australia, everything may have tested their floatation devices.

Amazing I've only ever read one sci-fi novel that used Aboriginal motifs in Otherland a book series I doubt many have read since it was quite ./hack/S.A.O before it's time but honestly is much better in many ways. Especially by the fact a weird thing for me is the serial killer antagonist John Dread reminiscing/hallucinating about what his mother taught him of "The Dreamtime". Truly a good book but alas I don't the Rainbow Serpent but still best thing about Author's using motifs from our world as well as theirs you can find something new in it on CZcams eh?

That's a given with mythology from any culture. People never stop telling stories.
Most cultures way back when, didn't even have anything to write the original tales down, so legends from their ancesters become a game of telephone.
New concepts and ideas from other tribes and cultures, are bound to dib in to their stories as well.

depends on the first group of humans to have reached Australia. we know there's consistent stories of the Pleiades that might count as the world's oldest myth with evidence to suggest it's been told for tens of thousands of years or possibly 100,000 years. if the midden site in NSW does turn out to be made by humans, it could rewrite the story of human migration completely.

the Pleiades story is possibly as old as humanity itself and has been found in some of the oldest cultures in the world such as the San and various Indigenous Australian peoples. Animist and shamanistic beliefs were the first and many still survive today. the ancestors of the San and the earliest Indigenous peoples of Australia carried this story with them, it's so beautiful that it has survived through everything
