Getting That 12-Bit Lo-Fi Sound (MPC 1000/2500 JJOS)

  • Just messing with the bit converter and bit grunger on the MPC.
    When I want a lo-fi sound then I usually do it in my DAW but sometimes I use the one in the MPC because I really like the options. The bit grunger too is dope and can give some wild results. Just watch your ears!

    I love bit reduction so much.
    I almost always throw 12 bit on the hats, at least during filtered sections.
    You can really get a unique character by using it strategically.
    Same thing with bouncing an element or two to cassette and then bringing it back into the mix. Another thing that works wonders on hi hats.

    The bit grunger is the best! If you route multiple tracks/samples to it, it acts like a drum bus so the samples interact and you get a dynamic compression and Saturation

    Wow, that's nice. I was going to eventually mess with this, this machine is deep. And easy to use.

    1986: Our new sampler is Hifi, 12 bit. 2021: My old sampler sounds Lofi, 12 bit!

      If we had a timemachine in 1986, history would have taught us that the grass was not greener in the future, on the other side it was full of 24 bit overproduced weed that made tge garden look like shit 😛

    • @lundsweden
      @lundsweden Před rokem +1

      Even some 60s and 50s recordings sound pretty good, reasonably clean to my ears. Maybe we have gone overboard with 24 bit... anyway I do record in 24 bit these days, but I'm sure 16 bit was almost as good!

      @@lundsweden Well...I do think it is a mixed bag of potatoes. Personally, I am finding that most of the music I like is from pre 2010 and mostly from 60-90's, with a big love for 90's. To me, those 30 years are the golden era of music. On the other hand, kids growing up today are used to 24 bit fidelity from all the modern recordings and probably couldn't care less. But add modern production techniques, lots of reverb/eq/comp/sidechain, etc and you have a sound that you will either love, hate or feel meh about. I think the limits we had back then in all sorts of ways, simply made for better records as it pushed everyone to be creative with what they had unlike like today where everyy "beat" / song coming out sounds the same, flat, boring and uninspiring and here 24 bit does not polish the turd and may even have a hand it the record sounding too "sterile". That's my 10 cents

    Although I don't use the bit reduction that much , grunge is extremely useful on kicks and snares. Creates some great harmonics

    Had a 1000 but didn't know that. Not sure if I had the JJ is version. All l remember was the patterns could go back and forth without having to wait their completion. Still as a 16 bit sampler, me having an sp12 combo at the time would have made me keep it.

    I don't see the same sequence of menu's as you have.
    After Pitch Shift I do not get Bit reduction but some stereo to mono options

    You are correct, this is a cool feature, and it sounds decent, but remember unless you have an actual 12 bit sampler like the s950, SP1200, etc, you will never know how much better the real thing sounds.

      i mean the average non music producer wouldnt really know the difference between this 12bit and a sp1200 12 bit. They will just think wow it sounds lofi. Now a hardcore boom bap producer would know the difference in a heartbeat.

    About 3 or 4 days ago (I know this isn't the same but) I got a pretty in-depth plugin for FL Studio that allows this sort of bit-crushing/resampling down to 12-bit. I don't know how to explain it but it sounds much different than normal bit-crushing, especially when you tweak the preset right. I genuinely put it on almost anything I make now, it just sounds so crisp and nice.

    hi, does anybody know the solution to this problem? I own a MPC 1000 which runs the 3.16 free OS version with 128mb memory installed. I have 128mb card with 10mb (12 sequences) of data saved to it. I loaded the 10mb, (nothing else, no presets sound) into the MPC memory. when I try to record more notes to a track, it says: "INSUFFICIENT MEMORY". why?
    internal memory is 128mb. you load 10mb to it and you can't record anything else because there's no available memory? when you look at the available internal memory it shows: "CARD free: 118mb", "WAVE free: 110mb", "SEQ free: 13kb"... I need sequence memory. Is it possible to assign/transfer memory space from "WAVE" to "SEQ"? or is this a OS version problem?

      @MGoolas Před 3 lety

      Remove the ram stick and try with mpc's hardware memory only. It might be that your ram stick is faulty.

  • @AnalogFlava
    @AnalogFlava Před rokem

    Which JJOS is this? I have the free frol 2015 and dont have any of these bit options I think. Alsp how big of a difference is there in terms od crunch? Would be nice with a real comparison between this and an2000xl or older 😃

    • @illmuzik
      @illmuzik  Před rokem +1

      This is the JJOSXL. I highly recommend it. There's also the OS3 which is dope too but XL has everything you will ever need and then some. The crunch is good, but of course it just depends on what you're looking for.

    • @AnalogFlava
      @AnalogFlava Před rokem

      @@illmuzik well, anything that sounds 90's is my thing :) Thanks! So I believe OS3 is the latest release with even more new features? and JJOSXL is a bit older yet has more stuff than what I currently have and worth paying 75 bucks for?
