- Ever feel like there's an international team of bad guys changing all of the easily remembered chemical names and turning them into test-failing, number-infused, pain-in-the-neck names? Well... you're not wrong. IUPAC exists, but try to keep in mind that they're doing it for the greater good. In this episode, Hank talks about IUPAC, prefixes, suffixes, ranking, numbers for carbon chains, and cis or trans double bonds.

I thought I was confused and not able to understand this stuff, then I watched this video, now I KNOW I am confused and unable to understand this material.
At least you learned something then, right?
AbuBakr Akram I passed the class with a B so I guess I did.
@@abubakrakram6208 you know what's crazy? You have the same beginning name of my chemistry teacher. "Abu Baker"
Bwahaha
PREACH
Chemistry test tomorrow, let's do this
emmy irene I got an average of 69% on mine. :( I actually tried too.
Hey 2 years later did you pass
@@sdslayer100 Hey 2 months later, i think thats a no
@@louisbradbury2347 Hey 4 minutes later that sucks
Just a friendly reminder for other young ppl studying for exams
Don’t forget to study your textbook 📚
"IUPAC is the international organization responsible for your unhappiness" lmaooo
"You don't need to know theses by heart" lol in grade 12 chem you do :'(
I came here for the exact same reason :(
Good luck on exams
John Doe you too man, you too.
He said "beyond the complexity that we have here," meaning that he was taking about like huge-ass molecules that are super-duper complex, so don't worry. :3
lol i'm in grade 11 herealso have to do all kind of chemical equation between these things
Kitai Suru If you go into college Chemistry you'll be in for a shock. 11th and 12th grade chemistry are nothing compared to even first year Chemistry.
Albert Einstein - 'Never memorize something that you can look up.'
Hey, Folks!
Wtf ....
Wtf the internet never even existed when Einstein was alive
Kedaar Lyer Umm.. “looking up" means from dictionaries, or any encyclopedia.. Yes, you can look up things from sources other than Internet... *sigh*
I wish someone would tell my Ochem professor that 🙃
Deondre Johnson I am just in high school and I am dying, how much pain are you going through.
Nomenclature was always my favorite in organic chem. Even when I was failing the class, I always did well on nomenclature.
I think so many students find these videos, and similar youtube videos so helpful is because you have already learnt this in class. Hearing it for the first time is always so much more confusing, but having it solidified in a different format and with a different perspective makes all the difference.
This is mainly because I'm trying to study chemistry on my own (screw you GAMSAT), and watching CrashCourse when trying to learn a new topic for the first time, I find I actually learn very little.
So, whilst CrashCourse is a great resource to catch your interest in the sciences, or as a quick refresher for students, it is pretty bad for people learning it the first time. So if you're having a lot of trouble learning, its not you. Keep studying, and it'll make sense soon enough :)
That's right; I don't agree with the people that say they learned much more from a 15-minute video than a 3-hour lecture. It's simply that the first time it's all foreign concepts heard for the first time.
yup
Actually, I'm trying to study on my own too, and I find Crash Course very easy to understand. But then again, I've always been a fast learner, and I'm also the kind of person who likes watching at 1.5x speed...
Julie Lam lol your funny, in grade 12 this is an Independent study unit, I am learning thermal while doing this. There is a 30 min presentation and a test in and we only get 4 weeks.
thankyou
7:26 - tell that to my chemistry teacher, back when I was in highschool.
My chem teacher says to our choice if we want to memorize, most people do because they don’t want to spend 3 house after school to finish there test.
"You don't have to memorise this!"
Tell that to my Organic Chemistry lecturer and my unit coordinator... :(
I've been watching CrashCourse forever now, and I just realized something awesome. The animations are very similar to the animation cutscenes used in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
nice
Standardisation, it's a pain in the ass. But it's just that kind of pain in the ass that actually saves your life. Just like a prostate exam.
Wait what.
Nahuel Méndez Diodati you are amazing.
3:19 no you get drunk.
Amazeballs!!!!! Totally mind boggling way of explaining!! You've just showed something worth living to and understanding so deep in the curious that you can never imaging. Stay blessed n continue the amazing work!!
Thank you so much! this helps me understand more of organic chemistry. I've learned about Trans and Cis before my class teacher explain to us. Now, I feel like a nerd haha
Another awesome lecture. I'll try to remember this when i need to look it up again.
Thanks.
In case anyone was wondering about the exact precedence of the functional groups listed in this video (ranked in decreasing priority):
#1 Carboxylic Acid
#2 Esters
#3 Aldehydes
#4 Ketones
#5 Alcohols
#6 Amines
It would be so useful if CZcams gave us a 0.75 speed.
Video Speed Controller extension for Chrome.
why just why
It gave spees
Your wish was granted
JOmegaRadical I guess there is a god after all 🤷🏻♂️
I kind of love your right now. You made more sense in this video than my chem teacher did in a week of learning this. He is horrible at explaining! Thank you so so so much! (seriously, I'm on the verge of tears right now because this has been the longest day, and not understanding chemistry has been the icing on top of the evil monster cupcake. Thank you)
It'd be cool if there was an online game where you could build molecules based on IUPAC names.
Your wish has been granted: web.chemdoodle.com/demos/iupac-naming
"She was right, that girl was trouble" I am actually in tears
when these CZcams videos teach you more than your college professor does... thank you so much for these videos
this is perfect, i needed a quick review. none of the 55 min naming compounds like all the other videos. Thanks!
I actually enjoy watching all his videos and find them very helpful! thank you!
"And no, I'm not doing the cinnamon challenge... Ever!"
Didn't I just recently seen you do the cinnamon challenge.
(Starts searching through every episode)
Oh, that was your brother. Never mind.
what ep was it?
I think it was the World History ep on the spice trade.
I swear that I remember answering your question, Robert Dmitri, by posting that link in a comment to you.
It's weird that I remember doing this, but clearly I didn't.
It's World History #23: The Colombian Exchange
The Reasonable Gamer nope, never heard of you
I’ve never been so confused about something in my life
Just the enthusiasm with which Hank teaches makes me smile :D
I've found something similar to the topic you spoke about at 1:40-2:05. In 1668, John Wilkins tried to create a language in which each word represented the thing itself. For instance, Zi identifies the Genus of “beasts” (mammals); Zit gives the Difference of “rapacious beasts of the dog kind”; Zitα gives the Species of dogs. (Sometimes the first letter indicates a supercategory- e.g. Z always indicates an animal.)
watching this in 2019 and remembering the cinnamon challenge was a thing
Hey, Crash Course, staff. Great thanks, for your videos pep's it's really helpful to me ever since G-11 up to now especially in the world of science, biology, chemistry and etc. especially chem.
Ive spent hours trying to find a video finding a video that explains this so I can understand, and this one did, tyvm!
I’ve been having the hardest time with this and I laughed from my heart at the intro
I still cant believe we took this in class dont remeber any of this
The flash: Hank Green, the fastest man alive
I've literally binged this whole thing I have my psychology and chemistry exam on Monday yay
My brain stopped working in 5:00. Will watch again for the 10th time 😅
I got a 77% in chemistry as we speak, that’s about to go down tomorrow.
5:23 I can't be the only one who saw Pit from Kid Icarus as the angel there, right?
This was a fantastic video- Hank's the best!
OMG YOU SAVED MY LIFE! MY EXAM ON SATURDAY AND I WAS SUFFERING FOR A WEEK TO UNDERSTAND THESE CONCEPTS I WISH YOU ARE MY PROF :( MY LIFE WILL BE SO MUCH BETTER.
Now I have hope on passing my exam. Thanks!!!
James Ryder
ok... that somehow got stuck in my brain more than the 2 hours lecture! is it the colors and picture? our chem prof is not exactly the nicest thing to look at. just saying thanks for the vid it helps.
Very nice and complex material. Keep doing that good job!
I needed that intro. Thank you.
Thank you IUPAC! Need more of these systems, or naming conventions ideologies, being used in more fields/subjects.
Time is better spent learning and understanding the material in depth. Which, in my view, is a big chunk of what good nomenclature enables. Rather than being forced to stroke some (often) dead persons ego. Be tested on their life's woes, and why 'X' is named after them, or why they got to chose what to call 'X'. Leave that kind of 'trivia' for the more fanatical people. Or perhaps history classes ;)
Am I the only one that wants a crash course physics? I love this stuff!
This was the most entertaining and most difficult video at the same time. 😂😂
Was doing chem recap and couldnt help but notice that you're a manu fan!
When you say add "-one" onto ethane to make ethanone isn't that incorrect? A ketone needs at least one carbon on either side of the carbonyl, ethane with two carbons can only be an aldehyde. The smallest ketone is propanone.
Ethanone hurts my ears
Why can't we just spell out the formula...
Wonderful and quick explanation/ revision for the night before the exam!
This video was so helpful I watched it over and over again. I decanted 236.588 mL ± 12.350 mL of oxidane into a cylindrical poly(ethyl benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate) flask and drank it to maintain a tonicity suitable for homeostasis.
I'm done with Chemistry and Biology !
Next semester I'll be taking Physiology and Physics ! I would appreciate it if you make us a few videos to explain annoyingly non-understandable material into fun understandable ones. :D
after this series is done they're doing another "mini series" I know that john is doing another literature one, I'm not sure what hanks doing but Physics seems like the logical next big series for Hank
introductory physics is fairly easy if you're good at math, and also very logical. At least to me. I wish you luck in physics, though, as I know that it's not everyones strong suit.
thank you guys
Khan Academy
If you're decent at math, introductory physics is really, quite easy. Just make sure you know how to use your formulas and you'll do great!
I dont use these videos to actually study with! They are great for review and consolidating or reinforcing the knowledge I already have! Not only that but they are actually funny and entertaining to watch!
Bro, youre awesome. Gonna watch your vids after every new lesson.
Thank you so much I was looking for a good Nomenclature video last week and here we have one!
isn't 7 hept not sept?
+Nithilan Vincent no it's sept
ok well then my chemistry teacher is teaching me incorrectly MemeeihD
Nithilan Vincent oh
+Nithilan Vincent My Lippincott's biochemistry text book says it's hept! :/
Latin = Sept
Greek = Hept
This guy is so much better than my teacher...
ha ha ha
I just started learning about organic chem nomenclature and i want to get this straight, so if a hydrocarbon compound contained 7 carbons its prefix can either be sept or hept?
Wonderful episode
Finding the longest carbon chain feels like finding the longest road in Settlers of Catan.
*bout 6 minutes in on my 10th time watching* "OH NOW I GET IT"
This gave me hope
CrashCourse have you guys considered making an Organic Chemistry portion of Crash course? it would be so appreciated.
That intro was hiiiiLAAARIOUS!
Dang it! Playing at normal speed sounds like he drank too much coffee, and at 0,5x he sounds like a drunk person!
Biochem exam tomorrow✌🏻😬
SO HELPFUL
This is so helpful! Thank you!
The IUPAC list isn't in the description...
exactly
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Functional_group#Table_of_common_functional_groups
The issue was not this - it was that in the video there is a link below for assigning names in molecules with multiple functional groups, like a hyrachy
it's mentioned in about four minutes fifteen in
*I need essay writer. Please recommend.*
*essay.0b0.all-about.in* - *this service has done well with all the papers I requested or needed.*
Watching this minutes before a chemistry test, thank you 🙏🙏🙏
is always delightful i understand what he says in the video without jumping back to text book. anyway, this is a very useful video for organic chem students.
Not to be too brash...
but this is a fucking nightmare. I love it :)
7:31 "thats why we have the internet and textbooks..." tell that to my prof 😂
dude you are the best and the coolest chemistry teacher
*Always makes our lives easy thanks man*
i wonder whether John has disowned Hank for wearing a Manchester United shirt
it's a Swindon Town shirt...
make the speed 2... 0.0
bruh
Cristiano Ronaldo and then .5 speed for a drunk giggle
+Cristiano Ronaldo yeah, sometimes that's exactly what my professor sounds like in class.
+Cristiano Ronaldo HAHAHAHAH
how do you change the speed?
0.5 LOL
Thankfully i am about to learn most of that by heart. Fun times!
YOU SAVED ME thank you for these amazing videos!!!
isnt the prefix for seven hept?
starfirenonie Yes..........................
ya :/
starfirenonie yp
This video was a lot of fun =) No I'm not being sarcastic!
Awesome work. Totally subscribing.
you are a complete blessing like you're literally amazing
dafuk is going on O_O my head hurts. i'll stick to architecture.
if only .75 speed existed
Blast He goes fast so you can get through them all. You're supposed to reverse the video where necessary; that's why they put a table of contents in the description as well.

Blast Video speed controller for chrome ! you can have speeds from 0.25, 0.5, 0.75. 1.25, 1.5 . 2
IT DOES
lots of information, I'm going to have to watch this again to fully absorbed it.
this video made me happy
Hept>sept
The swedish namnes for organic compounds are actually quite funny...
Every aldehyde compound basicly ends with the swedish word for "anal"
Makes for a bit of giggeling during a lesson
dewitt green
find dewitt green singing a playing.organ
butanal
This was really helpful. Thanks.
This is awesome I love these videos thank you so much
Personally, I hate the 'common names' cause they don't serve any purpose anymore
I mean I am never allowed to experiment with the compound in its natural state so why do I have to learn the common name which has no use to me?!
And neither is there any other information that I can get from it.
So why cant we just get rid of it...! I know its impossible, but at least in school level we can keep it to a minimum
The IUPAC is sooo much superior as for many reason Hank mentioned
MrHSX What country's system are you on? Here in the UK, we exclusively use IUPAC names in school (at least on my course) at the 16-18 level.
I'm in India
In the ICSE board (which is considered an 'international' education board)...
And damn you're lucky...
MrHSX Well, I have heard that the old names still haven't been replaced in industry, so you might find that you have an advantage if you become an industrial chemist. Otherwise, yeah. Not much fun.
They make a real effort to be standards-compliant in UK chemistry courses. The old British spelling "sulphur" is out, and we're told to use the more international "sulfur", for example. I don't mind but it takes a while for the teachers to adapt.
George Bateman Yeah, true dat... Fortunately or Unfortunately, not gonna dive much deeper into the Chemistry field...
Lol, that just makes us more confused, to follow British (which we do usually do) or to adopt the growthing US standards...
But yeah, I guess it's great for everyone at the end of the day to speak the same language world wide...
+MrHSX The reason we still use common names is for the same reason why people call reactions in which electrons are taken away "oxidations" or how one coulumb is not equal to the charge of one electron: scientists in the past started doing things one way, and when they realized there was an easier way to do things, they more or less just kept doing what they were doing. Old habits die hard, you know? It's easier to just create a new system than to overhaul an existing one. Plus, common names are useful in some classes of compounds, like diacids. Nobody calls them by their IUPAC names. Everyone uses common names for those. Just remember, mother makes Oh My Such Good Apple Pie, Sweet As Sugar.
Ethanone doesn't exist??
Yup acetone is the first with 3 carbons
thanks!
I don't know 80% of the words you say but it's good background noise and fun to hear big words.
Hope they do an episode on spectrometry. Now that stuff is fun. Plus it makes very little sense unless you study it and really learn it.
7 equals Sept-?
I object, because it is actually Hept-. It's easy once you realize that from 5 on it's actually just the Greek word for that number.
there are two numerical naming schemes...based on latin and greek. They are effectively interchangeable but certain things use latin over greek in some cases (but confusingly not all or close to all), normally when the word the prefix is being applied to is latin.
Not really. 9 is «non-», which apparently is not only from Latin, but from the Latin ordinal number.
Sept- is Latin, Hept- is Greek, you are right here, the molecule is Heptane as opposed to Septane.
Want to lose weight? Say the IUPAC name of table sugar before consuming it.
(2R,3R,4S,5S,6R)-2-[(2S,3S,4S,5R)-3,4-dihydroxy-2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)oxolan-2-yl]oxy-6-(hydroxymethyl)oxane-3,4,5-triol
Don't ask me why CZcams decided to put a line through parts of the name.
umm... i think i'll stick to glucose or sucrose...
But how do you know the structure of sucrose without saying (2R,3R,4S,5S,6R)2[(2S,3S,4S,5R)3,4-dihydroxy-2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)oxolan-2-yl]oxy-6(hydroxymethyl)oxane-3,4,5-triol?
cool video!!!!!!helped me a lot
I never thought I'd be watching a Chemistry video, after I finished Chemistry...
