    Very cool to see. My wife and I have been using the same Zwift Hub for both of our bikes, but my bike is an 11-speed, hers a 10, and we bought the hub with the 10-speed cassette about a month ago.
    I haven't wanted to adjust my derailleur every time I throw mine on or worry about changing a cassette, so I usually just deal with the overall poor shifting. This seems like a good solution for both of us, and especially if you can buy the upgrade kit for only an additional $60. I guess at least we'll have an spare 10-speed cassette around if we ever need it haha.

    Has Zwift actually opened up the Bluetooth protocol that the Click and Play controllers use to tell Zwift to shift up and down (and in the case of the Play tell it to do other things like steer and brake or Power Up), so that third parties can make and sell their own controllers or add virtual shifting (and these other virtual features) to their virtual cycling platforms? And if so is on a licensing basis or open source? If it's open source then I could probably build such a controller in an afternoon from parts that I already have.
    Of course other platforms could just as easily add virtual shifting (steering, braking, etc.) to their apps, but it makes sense to settle on a single protocol standard so people won't have to buy multiple sets of controllers for each platform they use, and since Zwift is the first to do this it makes sense that its protocol is the one adopted, for now at least. Firmware can always be updated later on but it's probably better to start out with a common standard than have competing ones that just confuse people and keep them from adopting these technologies for fear of being left stranded with the wrong standard.

    I was just talking about this with a buddy the other day... wouldn't it be nice to have a singlespeed, but you couldn't use it in freeride mode. I have to imagine Wahoo will have some answer to this in the future... hopefully via software and a small remote!

    This has thrown an unexpected wrench into my indoor training plans. Currently I have a Tacx Neo Gen 1 with an old bike on it - the Neo is great but the bike is falling apart, it’s good for ERG rides and not much else these days. Even a basic 10 speed bike is pretty expensive these days so I thought I might go all in on a Kickr Bike but this gives me a different (and much cheaper) option of selling my Neo and continuing with my old bike on the Zwift trainer with this cog for very little money. It’s really tempting compared to spending 3k on the Kickr 🤔

    So you get 24 gears no matter what speed your bike is? My bike is a 16 speed (8 gear cassete in the back, and two chain rings in the front). So I would be getting more available speeds with this? Do you ever need to shift your gears in the front, or do you just keep it on the small ring? FYI - Zwift customer service is great. I bought the zwift hub classic before all this was available. If anything you could request a return for your trainer and the upgrade kit, and than buy the new one but hopefully it doesn't come to that. Sounds like a hassle. Me new upgrade kit comes tomorrow. Just reach out to Zwift support. I did it in a email and I got a response within a hour or so. I'm more interested in this for other reasons than swapping bike. Using virtual shifting will be less wear and tear on your own bike. Your chain won't wear out as fast, your shifting cables will be preserved as you won't be using them, and no need to wear out casssetes faster. Lots of benefits. I bike/zwift soo much that my shifting cables tend to break on me once a year. I'm hoping this will help with that.

      From bikeradar:
      Zwift says the Hub’s virtual drivetrain has 24 discrete gears, simulating a gear ratio range from 0.75 to 5.49.
      That’s roughly equivalent to a 30-tooth chainring paired with a 40t cassette sprocket at the lowest end, all the way up to a monstrous 55x10t gear at the high end.

    I don’t really understand how their single gear “cassette” will work with any bike and any chain. Doesn’t the chain and cassette that the bike comes with matter?

    • @kidsafe
      @kidsafe Před 10 měsíci

      The cassette clearly doesn’t matter because you take your rear wheel off before using direct-drive trainers. The chain doesn’t matter because all bicycle chains have the same 0.5” pin pitch. In a singlespeed setup, the width of the chain won’t matter. If a cog is narrow enough to mesh with a 12-speed chain, it will have no issue meshing with an 8-speed chain.

    • @WeeFBS
      @WeeFBS Před 10 měsíci +1

      The space between the teeth is the same regardless of chain, the width of a chain changes from 8 all the way 12, so a 12 speed chain would work… poorly yes… but work on a 8 spd cassette as it’s thinner than a 8 spd chain but a 8 chain won’t work on a 12 spd cassette as it’s too wide

    How does the Difficulty setting work with this?

    • @Bober909
      @Bober909 Před 10 měsíci

      Difficulty setting only effects the resistance based on gradient. So if you do a 10% climb, it's going to feel like a 5% climb, that doesn't mean you can climb faster, as the power is still going to reflect your speed. With virtual shifting, nothing changes, it's just that gears are handled by zwift. An example 10% climb; With virtual shifting, you can keep a steady cadence while climbing in 10th virtual gear at 50% trainer difficulty. The same could be achieved in 5th gear at 100% trainer difficulty. Trainer difficulty is mostly there if there are 10%+ climbs and your original bike had gear ratios that you couldn't physically handle.
