over time you'll get more familiar and comfortable with the entire speed range. Give it time and lots of practice. It took me years in the mid '80's to go from competent, consistent positive all the way around looping the HP, to getting comfortable less than 1G around the apex of inverted maneuvers.
Nice place, nice landscapes and amazing flight! but dude take a look at the battens at the left wing. after the loops the tail of battens were not fastened. but before loops it was.
You rock man!!! Always a pleasure wachting you flying. Also greetings to Ignazio and your friend who flies the Orbiter, I unfortunately forgot his Name...
Andrea, I don't know just HOW this slipped my attention... Well done fratello. But - scary. Especially knowing all that can go wrong if not executed correctly. And: you can't really go "halfway", you have to fully commit the first time. Interestingly, you didn't really push out on the bar all that much; I guess the kinectic energy is enough to force it up anyway. Did you have any advice or was it just "pull as much as thin thing will handle, and then slightly push and see what happens" ?! I admire your courage. Not sure I'll ever attempt this in my Atos (I don't think they're made for that. They probably can handle it, but it seems, uhhh... inappropriate ;-)
I can clearly remember that day, I woke up knowing that I ready to try my first loop, so I went out and did what you saw in the vid. About pushing the bar you are right, modern hg are so fast that is not always necessary to fully push the bar. I achieved the minimum skills for the loop doing a lot of wingovers, from basic 90° bank to almost 180° bank ( during 3 years ) once you know how to do a nice wingover you also know a lot about the loop, which is easier. About the Atos I really don't know, maybe it's even easier...I'd be curious to see one
It's a lake, so there's no need to wash anything, I just packed the glider after waiting an hour, let the harness dry for 2 days and the chute was luckily dry. I wouldn't do it in the see... Too much damage
Andrea Ghidini true, only flying at the beach is a nightmare. I did today and there is sand everywhere... I will wash tomorrow before takeoff and let it dry while flying! Lol. No beach flights tomorrow.
@@AndreaGhidiniHangGliding oh thank god, I was worried about that landing, looked oceanie, well done, I never fully committed to over the top, nice one
Well flown. One question. Is the glider one of the previous models of the Laminar? Or have u trimmed it for acro? Because the last models are known to be a bit more difficult to loop due to the XC optimalization trimming. May be a bit prone to high speed stall buffet in the initial part of the loop if not flown precisely correct. Myself only do loops with the WW T2C 144 and reason for that is the benign high speed stall characteristics in the pullup. If mishandled with letsay a bit too hard pullup it will not bite you with a buffet like the latest Laminar may will do.
This glider is a 2015 one, and now I'm looking also the latest one. It's just a matter of trimming up tips and sprogs until pitch divergence disappear. 3 minutes of trimming and the glider behaves super sweet during loopings. So I think that rumours are basically wrong
@@AndreaGhidiniHangGliding Yeah, sounds reasonable. The comment on the latest Laminar was that my instructor Johnny Nilssen had his latest Laminar tuned for competition and said he did not like to loop that one. Btw, once I have You here. In easter holiday me and some friends plan to road trip from Norway to Italy and usually we fly Bassano. However, to get a bit away from the goldfish bowl we looked into Laverno and Garda. Where will u guys be flying in the easter ?
@@AcrodesignerLNSNI he was totally right, it's almost a suicide to loop a xc tuned laminar, I would never do it either. You will find us at Garda for sure, if you plan to go to laveno we could move there too
@@AndreaGhidiniHangGliding Okay, so I guess it was a lake? fresh water? I was thinking about putting down in salt water, not good. Still, getting your harness soaked, etc... The greatest sport in the world without a doubt!
I'm old school I started with the Pliable Moose, in 1976, Question it's what is the line / cable of whatever it is on the control frame i see these guys trailing when they fly what does it do?
It's the VG ( variable geometry ), by pulling that line the crossbar move toward the tail and push forward the wingtubes changing the wing shape ( stiffer sail, sharpest leading edge, lower maximum thickness, sweep angle and center of pressure ). To make it very easy it's like a car gear
@@davidmasland5627 fully released VG provides an easier glider (more handling, more bank, more lift ) suitable for: take offs, landings and thermalling. Fully tightened VG gives you a stiffer glider ( higher top speed, higher stall speed, better penetration, better glider ratio, higher inertia and lower bar pressure), good for transfers for thermal to thermal. Obviously, every pilot finds a personal mixture of those 2 configurations for every moment of the flight, it's not an on/off feature.
Modern hang gliders are really fast, not every loop needs a big arms extension. I also have to say that in case of troubles (low speed while inverted ) the best thing to do is pull hard the bar. You can see both the situations here czcams.com/video/2q1iPGJtiGY/video.html
@@AndreaGhidiniHangGliding Wow! It makes sense. Which I find interesting is almost 4 seconds of dive was enough to make a loop. Can you share some technical data if you have? What is your air speed before rounding out for loop. Did you changed glider's settings or it's in stock config?
@@freeflyer I don't have data anymore of this flight, but I can produce some in the next flights, I'll share it. Yes the glider it's a bit tuned, I got reinforced downtubes, wing profiler, long leading edge carbon inserts and hi trim of tips and sprogs. Of course I hook a bit higher when I go out to do aerobatics ( usually I got a good low hook-in height, a fist barely stay between chest and bar )

The need for speed
What a crazy place to land!!
the only downside is you have to wash, dry and repack the reserve chute. And wash the glider.
