    You can tell that the two vocalists have had many disagreements about direction in their music, since they both appear to be perfectionists (especially Jesse, since he writes most of the tracks). But it's really cool to see that they have learned to work with each other and trust in each other's creative processes, to get the best results. And personally, I think this album is easily one of Erra's defining works.

      It's crazy to think about bands making transitions like that. Like how difficult it must have been for JT to step in and fill Garrison's role, and for them to so seamlessly change the sound but still sound like ERRA. I don't know how well (if at all) JT knew the guys in the band before he joined, but seeing how insanely far they have come since then is just so awesome.

      Yep, JT is more into the heavy side and Jesse is all about the softer and atmospheric stuff. In their past songs Jesse did most of the singing now they have learned to work around their differences and combine their taste in music. Jesse didn't even sing once in Scorpion Hymn something the band hasn't done in over 6 years even before JT joined. JT was definitely right about Drift. I think the self-titled is easily their best work yet as a band. It's comprehensive and amazing and there's really nothing you can objectively criticize about it. It's just missing the wholly unique vibe that Jesse was going for and finally accomplished in Drift though. It was pretty and ethereal despite being, y'know, metal. That was what Jesse took away from Misery Signals back in the day and wanted to expand upon, and that's what blew my mind when I listened to Drift for the first time back in 2016.
    Up until then I hadn't really seen anybody do that before and I wanted in so badly to the point that I started a whole new band with other kids Drift had afflicted in the same way. Only music project I can really say I was proud of to this day. Guys sold their Les Pauls for any 7 or 8 string they could find back in the day to copy Drift and Singularity by Northlane.
    I literally can't wait to see what these guys do next. Everything, the covers, Drift, Neon, the Self-Titled, I've loved it all. I think they've really hit their stride now and we're seeing some terrific things.

    • @preston2636
      @preston2636 Před 2 lety +3

      Unfortunately for me I had already fallen in love with impulse and augment. They're a totally different band now but amazingly still really innovative and great song writing. The rhythm guitar style and lyrics of augment are extremely intimate to me and I have a spiritual connection with that album. Self titled is the best album since augment but it doesn't top augment brother. Go back and REALLY listen to augment front to back and read the lyrics. That album was more consistent and I prefer the ringing note chord riffs rhythm guitar style way more then the tapping style. But this is all subjective I am happy erra had a major impact on you and inspired you to pick up a 7 string

    • @preston2636
      @preston2636 Před 2 lety +3

      I just can't believe you left augment out of that list. You are sleeping on that album in a major major way. Alan rigdon and garrison we're a very special part of their style that line up was way better than the current line up. Garrison had way more intricate and we'll spoken lyrics they were really deep and touched on a lot of Buddhism. Hr also had a way better vocal range than jt. And Alan rigdon had that unique style that was a perfect blend with Jessie. The new era of era which is written sorry by Jessie is amazing guitar work. Please go listen to the album augment like 7 times in a row

    New songs are fuego. My only hope moving forward is that they find they abandon traditional pop song structures and start writing fully linear epic masterpieces. Jesse always adds nuances to ensure the songs aren't overly repetitive, but I think its still holding them back slightly. Still the best metalcore band currently in my opinion.

    From Drift and Neon to the self tiled there is a noticeable difference in how "contrived" some of the sections of songs are. I love drift, it's a great album. Luminesce is still one of my favorite Erra tracks. But the self-titled album felt so free and every song was really a blank canvas for each of the band members to do their own thing. I can really appreciate Jesse acknowledging the truth that sometimes we can get in the way of our own goals by not getting out of the way of other people's creative abilities. Truly, the self-titled is one of my favorite metal albums of all time. Please keep going in this direction. You guys are crushing it right now🤘🤘

    5:50 That's fair enough and do your thing, but if you get a bunch of pissed off fans, that's pretty fuckin understandable. The lyrics are pretty vitriolic, super insulting, and unapologetically so in the hatefulness towards Christians, in which that is miles away from a fair and good-faith criticism on religion or a thought-provoking commentary on it. You may think the song slaps, but that doesn't change that other people find it as a middle finger to who they are as people, and it's a pretty massive ask to request that they just look the other way on that and just focus on the cool synths you guys used.
    It's like covering One in a Million by GnR and telling people who are gay and black to just not mind the F-bombs and N-bombs. You can't really be that surprised if you find that they have a problem with that.
