My father owned a standard shifted 190D from 92 to 2002. Unfortunately he passed away, so I took that fantastic car with unbelievable 600.000 km. Under my ownership another 300.000 km came on the odometer. I would have kept that car longer, but in 2006 the rude environment law in Germany killed that car. During these 900.000 km live the car was maintained by my father and me. Some parts like water pump, suspension of the front wheels, brake discs, brake pads, tyres were changed, that was it. That car lived with the first clutch, the first transmission and the first exhaustion hose. I sold that car to an export dealer. After that I owned 2 type 124 Diesel, one was damaged after 3 years by a tram, the other one was killed by an accident too. Today I drive an A-class 180 CDI. Except maintenance nothing special happened. The german TÜV was passed last week without any problems.

The driving school in my village also ran a taxi service and used a white 250D for that, I guess it was from about 1986. 5-speed manual. I remember taking a ride in it once when it was about 8-10 years old, it had then done 900.000kms. Quite some years later it was parked in front of their house, there was 400.000kms on the tacho, so 1,4million. Somewhere around that time they quit taxi service as the owners were getting old, and their son continued the driving school. I think 2-3 years ago I saw it again, the engine was noticeably loud with a very mechanical noise. I heard that the man had passed away some time ago but his wife was still using it. It looked very worn, with some obvious scratches, and rust on the rear wheel arches, something I never saw before. I looked through the window (also scratched, don't know why) and saw 100-something thousand. So yes, it must had done 2.1+ million kms by then. I guess she never wanted a new car anymore and just kept driving it because she was used to it.

I have one of these cars with this engine, but automatic. The gearbox does kill the acceleration compared to the manual shown here, but the torque is relentless. You put your foot down, and it just steadily gets faster, and faster, and faster, and then you're doing 100+mph in a 35 year old car with no bother at all.

Water temp gauge is either broken or provides false indication, it is stuck at 40°C. Normal temp is just under 80°C or slightly above when flatout.
To any owner of this car model:
    - Engine can still be in a very good condition at 400 000KM+ with premium oil (Mobile1 Synth 5w40).
    - Fuel consumption at 400 000KM was 6.5 to 7L/100km
    - Oil change intervals 5000KM never exceed 8000km.
    - Change oil filter with every oil change.
    - Change diesel fuel filter and air filter every one or two oil changes depending on driving conditions and fuel quality.
    - Change all 5 Glow Plugs and fuel injectors (or fuel injector calibration) every 200 000Km.
    - Serpentine belt is expensive but lasts forever, check it regularly for cracks and signs of wear.
    - Test your coolant, never exceed 160 000KM, use premium quality coolant and keep some in your trunk, never top up with any non-certified coolant.
    - And the most important advice, learn the basics and do everything yourself, if you don't have a place to work go to a self-serve garage or become a friend with a mechanic.
    - Non rubberized oil based Rust Proofing every 1 or 2 years.
This car is the last of its kind from Mercedes-Benz, other models are 250D(same 2.5L engine inline 5 cylinder) and 300D(same engine +one to make it 3.0L inline 6 cylinder) the turbo models are not as good as the normally aspirated in terms of longevity.
The 190D and 200D are both great and reliable 4 cylinder but less horse power.
    That’s all I remember!
The above mentioned models made me believe that Mercedes-Benz is the best out there but the next generation 1993 C-Class started a turning point (battery in the trunk) and some strange design choices and cost cutting everywhere.
The 2001 model had so many unnecessary electronics that it makes you run away from it.
    The 2007 Model: No comment….
    The 2014 Model: Why?!....I’m in shock….
    Take care internet!!

In 2003 inherited a blue 1989 190D 2.5 in the US, which I learned were pretty rare! That blue Mercedes belonged to my dad who inherited it from his uncle, who, with that car, taught both his daughters how to drive, and who both used it throughout their high school years. The year before I got it, it was used to haul bricks back and forth while building a new restaurant, so it was severly punished. It never left us stranded and was always reliable. The only time it did strand us was when we decided to test the reserve fuel light. We later learned that light meant drive DIRECTLY to the gas station. During its final days, I took it on a road trip from Knoxville, TN to Norman OK and back. Sadly, the odometer died somewhere around 320k miles several years before I first started driving it so I have no idea how many tens of thousands were added. We ended up giving the car to a local mechanic who wanted to tinker with it and fix it up. I'll sometimes still see it driving around. I loved the "blue thunder"!

Mercedes pretty much made the only diesels bearable from an cabin noise and vibration perspective back then. from the outside it sounds like an tractor, inside quieter than similar sized 4 cyl petrols. also extremely reliable of course!

My father had one of these unkillable machines, he had the N/A model. Had a lot of good memories with it, he unfortunately had to sell it because there was a lot of work to do on it he couldn't afford. I'm aiming to have one as my first car. And knowing how reliable it is, I'm planning to keep for a while.

What's ironic is that this car was the entry-level model (I don't know of you said like this, english's not my first language) of Mercedes at the time and they putted what is probably the best engine they ever build in terms of durabilty.
Personnally I'd love to drive it when I'll be able to, tho I'm not sure if I'll use it as a daily drive car, I heard it guzzle gas a lot.
