- 11/28/19 Season 149, episode 9 - Two medical professionals want their children to experience the way they grew up in Africa, so they search for a home in Accra, Ghana.
I am Kenyan, and I find these prices ridiculously high, esp. since the houses are not even fully furnished... Maybe it's coz of the location. Most likely the location is dominated by expatriates, and so they pay premium. They pay for the location. Nairobi has the same dichotomy. Houses located in areas patronized by expatriates are ridiculously expensive. But after you stay in the city for a while and are able to shop around, you find even better offers at ridiculously affordable prices. It would also make more sense - after a while - to just buy a house or build instead of paying those ridiculous rents.
Bah, thats cheap, try australia or new zealand. The finishes look great, real timber floors and doors, the 2nd house for example was ginormous for the price.
This is the reason why I would have picked the 3rd house. Would have saved a lot of money and the husband would have gotten his pool in six months.

Great episode, lovely family. I think that the more convenient location sealed the deal for the house they chose. I think every time Asheri appeared, she was wearing a different colourful and beautiful African cotton (?) print - which I loved.

I can understand pool can be great in place as Ghana when pool can be used a lot. However I think they make a wise choice as it's about location, location, and location. Long commute to work and need to drive kids to school can be absolute nightmare.
Why is that these HHI episodes RARELY show any realtors who are local nationals? Even in Accra, Ghana...!!!
Kinda sad, no? When HGTV looks to partner with agents in different countries they usually gravitate towards 'like' people. I have seen a few with natives and locals as agents but you're right, they are the minority.
That why they get ripped off. Those houses would not cost that much for a local.
It’s actually sad cause they do have great local realtors but they often choose foreigners and they often market to western audience. The locals will do a great job and actually expose more of the culture.

Research is important, especially when moving to a different country, so that you aren't surprised with the pricing and cost of living.
That’s very true we actually visited Ghana for an entire week and scoped out areas for housing, schools for the kids before actually accepting the job and making the move. We wanted to make sure it was the right fit for our family.

How to pick your priorities when looking for a house in Africa? pool should be the least of your concerns
We are not originally from Ghana and I believe it’s mentioned in the video that we are from Cameroon and always wanted to move back to Africa and the opportunity presented itself in Ghana. Every single person has their priorities when looking for a house, if pool is the least of your concern that doesn’t make it general for everyone. We enjoy an outdoor lifestyle and having a pool at home is great for the kids and the family.
If that's small, then they should see European houses
