- We asked six West-Coasters to pronounce some of Maine’s trickier place names and their attempts are absolutely hilarious. To be fair, I dare anybody to say Passagassawakeag without laughing. But if you’re from the Pine Tree State, watching these guys try is sure to crack you up.

I'm sorry, but I've never heard anyone from here pronounce Skowhegan the way you say it's pronounced.
(Skow-hee-g'n, for anyone that was wondering.)
From Starks, and my thoughts exactly
Yeah, I've definitely never heard anyone say skuh-wee-g'n. I've always heard skow-hee-g'n.
I'm from Skowhegan and (Skow-hee-g'n) is how it's pronounced...
my husband lived just outside there most of his life and he said the same thing.
ummm yeah Skowhegan is pronounced 'Skow-HEE-gan' and nothing like what you put in the video. seriously nobody in Maine would know what you're talking about if you say it the way you wrote.
THIS is what i just came into the comments for.. hahah exactly!
yeah seriously that pissed me off
I have heard skow-hig-un.... just a local mispronunciation.
***** I'm from Maine, you're right, and honestly ive never heard of some of these places lol their picking weird ass places.
I was showing this to my dad and I was like "that's not how it's pronounced!" And I got mad
I drive over the Passagassawakeag River every day for work.
Maine Represent.
I have never heard Skowhegan be pronounced that way.
"But if you’re from the Pine Tree State, watching these guys try is sure to crack you up." ---OR make you want to drive knitting needles in your ears
Being from maine, this is hilarious to watch. Most of these names are native american, btw xD
Many of the names are Penobscot. while I understand some of the mistakes, "saco" was painful to sit through.
my sister's boyfriend is from a town outside Skowhegan. it's pronounced how it looks. literally have not even heard "skuh-wee-g'n" since they started dating
This made me laugh so much as a mainer
I live in Maine and I just have to say that this video is quite dumb. If you're going to be asking people to pronounce the names of something, you should at least know how to pronounce them yourself.
Also, why not chose names of places that AREN'T clearly foreign or Native American.
Here's a good list, some of these we have our own way of pronouncing, so good luck: Windham, Bangor, Ogunquit, Biddeford, Presque Isle, Falmouth, Damariscotta, Scarborough.
Why not Calais or Topsham? Bowdoin or Machias?
Amateurs.
Being a Mainer and watching this, such a field day. Although I think the creators are taking some liberties with the names, like Skowhegan. But as soon as I saw the Passagassawakeag River, I got excited, and enjoyed the show.
You definitely needed Bangor, that one's always fun to hear people say. My grandfather's side was from Preque Isle and Vinalhaven and my Gramma's, somewhere around Mt Katahdin. I adored their accents. Whenever I hear one it reminds me of my family. They always talked about these places. Mooselookmeguntic was one. Most are native American names which is pretty awesome. I'd never heard of Isle au Haut or Wytopitlock before though. Gramma would always warn me to stay away from the French Canadians lol
Passagassawakeag is the river that runs through my hometown. It means "spearing sturgeon by torchlight."
being from maine this id wicked funny.
Try Chiputneticook, Mooselookmeguntic, or the one that separates the Mainers from those for away, Bangor! (It's BAN-gor, not Banger!)
Also Scarborough.
Mooselookmeguntic is a favorite, along with Mattawamkeag. Don't forget Calais is Callus, not Callay, and Madrid is MAD-rid, not Muh-DRID! "Banger" makes me grind my teeth. So does "Mount Dessert Island". And the absolute worst - Orono is not "Oh-RON-oh"! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! It's "OR'no", the middle syllable sort of disappears. (I was born in Camden and went to the U of Maine 25 years ago. My first dorm roommate was from NYC and I spent an entire day drilling her on local town names so she didn't sound like a flatlander twit.)
SKOW-HEE-GAN
Needs Bangor!
Skowhegan is pronounced skow-town.
Lol the Isle au Haut one is funny because I can see that island from where I live
I am from maine the name of Skowhegan how they got their name was two native americans were in the woods one yells out Skow! his friend looks then the first native says He gone!
I am from maine and yes I will admit I laughed my butt off at this cause it's always funny seeing flatlanders try to pronounce town names Like Mooselookmaguntik and Bangor. But hey if you don't live here or have family here more then likely your gonna have trouble with a word or two.
the last few were really weird but vinahaven saco and skowheagn those are classic maine places but the others i drew a blank. But it was really funny seeing them try that last one. It's weird to hear out of staters try to pronounce places i've said my whole life it really is a weird difference
That's not how you pronounce Skowhegan..I've never heard anyone say skuh-wee-g'n. It's Pronounced how you see it. Skowhegan.
Okay. I live in Maine and even I had a hard time pronounce ones later on because I have never even heard of those places
I've lived in ME for all except the first four yrs of my life and I've never even heard of these places except Skowhegan (which no one pronounces like the video indicated) and the Passagassawakeag River.
you haven't heard of Saco? Saco is pretty well-known for Mainers. Funtown/Splashtown, Cinemagic...
I am more supposed you have never heard of Saco than anything else.
you gotta know most of these if you have claimed to live in Maine for what i guess is most of your life
Sorry, I only focused on the strange sounding ones. I have absolutely heard of Saco, and been to Funtown/Splashtown many times. But I have honestly not heard of many of these names, strange as that may be. Though I'd never really pay attention to town names nor been far past Augusta until I went to college, lol.
lmao flatlanders trying to pronounce places in this state is hilarious
It's pronounced wi-ti-pit-lock were I grow up town of 65
yeah im a mainer and I live in saco and I found it sooo funny how they pronounced it
pittsfield maine here and yeah kinda funny but its pronounced skowvegas i dont know where u guys get your facts from and yeah needed bangor pronounced bangah no rs allowed ah only
After watching this and living in Maine my whole life, I realized our towns have some pretty fucked up names! But Christ buddy this was funny as shit!
I was really hoping for Oquossoc to be in there. That would have been hilarious.
I live in Saco
Topsham is always a favorite ...most people who have never heard of it want to pronounce the "h"
Should have had Chebeague island. Most people can't even try to pronounce it. (It's pronounced sha-big)
Yeah, I don't know where you got your pronunciations from, but most were wrong.
You forgot Seboeis Me and Ogunquit too!!!
LMFAO
You fucked up skowhegan. I don't know how you could possibly have pulled that off but you did. Good friggin' job.
I feel these aren't that hard if only they knew how to pronounce their syllables.
im from Maine and i only know of Saco and Skowhegan where the fuck are these places? and who named them?!?
Nectric Isle au Haut is near Machais. Wytopitlock is up in the County.... not sure exactly where. buy a map for heaven's sake!
Passagassawakeag is the original native american name.....
what is this even
these people are trying too hard to make stupid pronunciations... it's not that funny.
