    Spraying the grass was a good tip, and helps the calcium/vitamins stick! 👍👍

    Omg! So glad I found you. My son was given this turtle and we’ve been trying to figure out how to properly care for him (or her) ever since 😬 it’s been a bit of a struggle but you’ve helped clear up a lot! So apparently we need another light and possibly a larger enclosure.

    I use to feed my spur thigh tortoise- tomatoes/lettuce/cucumber. and occasionally chicken and liver pate. They will actually eat some meat products and it doesn't seem to be bad for them. Eventually my tortoise was given to a tortoise sanctuary so he could mate.

    Thanks for posting! I am in the same area and was hoping I picked a good species for our climate, seems like it was a good choice. I was leaning towards a Redfoot but I read they like humidity and tropical environments, something we don't have in Sac.

      Hey that's exactly my situation! I was at the reptile shop and I was torn between the Redfoot and the Leopard and I settled on the Leopard because of the hot Sac valley summers

    Hi! I have a baby (~4.5 months old) leopard tortoise which I got about a week ago. She was loath to eat at all for the first few days (which I gather can be normal for tortoises when they change homes). Now she seems fine with the idea of eating but... she just doesn't seem very good at it.
    She can't "bite" off pieces of her greens. I've seen tortoises tear pieces off and she tries to do that too but she doesn't have a strong enough jaw grip, seemingly. I've started cutting her greens into extremely tiny pieces to see if she can consume them more easily, but I'm wondering what my expectations should be here and whether there are any alternatives to make it easy on her while she's young until her jaw strength improves?
    In short, is it normal for baby tortoises to not be able to bite off chunks of their food easily and is there anything wrong with them just gnawing on it for a while instead of being able to just down their piles of greens?
    Thanks for any insight!

      Hi Scott. Congrats on your new leopard tortoise!
      I have not experienced this personally and I don’t know of anyone who has.
      Does she use her front feet to try to tear the food off? Frankie usually uses his front feet to break off the piece of food he wants.
      I think as long as she can eat, it doesn’t really matter how long it takes or how she does it. But if this is causing her to not eat or be able to eat and leave most of her food behind I would take her to the vet right away. Best wishes!

      I got him from California reef co. in Newark, CA. Are you in California? I follow a breeder that is based in Stockton. I can tag you in his Instagram if you have one. He usually has leopard tortoises

    is it ok to just have 1? Does he ever bite you ?

    • @christinemrtz6637
      @christinemrtz6637  Před 4 měsíci

      Yes one is best! In the wild they prefer to be alone and only come together during mating season. Otherwise there will be aggressive towards each other.
      And not he had never bitten me ☺️ but if I’m hand feeding him he might accidentally bite me if I don’t move my fingers fast enough lol
