@@ShadowCraft1195 they got that because nietzsche fans like to say that he simply described a set of tendencies and a moral code that he named 'nihilism', and was critical of that. however, that's really not the whole truth either, as nietzsche very much conducted himself AS a nihilist, and he explains nihilism so successfully because HE was the one who codified it. his critique is of nihilism as a society-wide moral code, that is, if everyone in a given society were a nihilist that society would necessarily be fucking trash (and we know this is true because we've seen it happen) - but he himself both was a nihilist but ALSO advocated nihilism for individuals both able and willing to live nihilistically to their own ends.

@@ShadowCraft1195 Mate, you've got no clue on what Nietzsche was about. If Google is all you base on. No one, AND I MEAN no one, who understood his writings ever considered him a Nihilist. He got credited for it incorrectly but bigwigs who had very little understanding of his works. Even college professors in famous Universities don't actually think he's a Nihilist. Experts on his life and works don't think he's a Nihilism. Edgy teenagers do because it's off Google.
Whenever you read his stuff, you'll notice the surprising amount of optimism in the way he structures his paragraphs. Then the resolutions to problem formula he uses is closer to Non-Classic Existentialism and closest to Absurdism, than actual Nihilism. If anything i'd say he's more Absurdistic in his approach, if he only didn't repeatedly say to discard the notion of actually having no morality driven purpose since Morality is no longer relevant which is the slight opposite of what Camus suggests.

A little known fact about the expression "you'll never hold a candle to ___" that very few people know: It originated from the practice of skilled tradesmen taking on apprentices to teach them a craft, and the apprentice was often tasked with holding the candle tray while they observed the master so the craftsman could work with both hands with a clean work space free of the risk of knocking over the candle and starting a fire. Telling someone that "they'll never hold a candle to me/my craft" is really saying, "you're too hopeless and inept to even be trusted with a simple task, let alone understand what you're watching."
It's actually really savage. And it doubles in this case because not only did the Eastern cultures invent writing long before the Western cultures did, the Eastern Philosophers are telling the Westerners that they are so far above and beyond in their mastery of their craft that the Westerners can't even comprehend just how little they know in comparison.

Changing that situation, or “filling the bowl,” can only harm their position. Let them stew, then keep letting them stew, and never fill your bowl with that stew. They will destroy each other, and attacking again can only serve to use your resources, and may cause them to reunite against a common enemy that had been forgotten.

If you noticed, every philosopher rapped in a style that fit their own philosophy's style. Confucius placed a lot of tradition and respect while Sun was all about the aggression. Voltaire did his own thing while Nietzsche was bold and forceful in his rapping. Their philosophies may not have been as represented in what words they were saying, but I felt it was clever that they could have a full back and forth battle with both sides rapping 100% in character for repping their philosophical stance.
Also, not sure if it was covered, but the line about the bowl being empty was Lao saying that the opportunity created by Sun's crafty diversion would only be an opportunity so long as the East didn't act on it (thus leaving the opportunity there for the taking indefinitely), which directly contradicts Sun's whole angle of taking the initiative in fighting the opponent on all fronts both physical and mental. Thus, Sun got upset and couldn't see the sense in it.
As for the Confucius eyebrows joke, most traditional artwork of Confucius had his eyebrows never quite done correctly. They were always lopsided in some fashion, whether position or appearance. I am not sure if the real Confucius' eyebrows were like that, but the artwork just isn't consistent.
The to-go box joke? I don't understand enough about to-go boxes, but maybe it is a jab at how you have to smack the boxes to get the food out in some cases? Like smacking Sun to put him back in line after he declared war on Confucius (hence Confucius' "Okay, I see. You want to make it like that?" line, which is also a sort of making food bar, I guess, to go with the to-go box line).
Loved the breakdown, though. I learned something new! Keep up the great work!

Actually, Sun Tzu is serving the king of Wu during Late Zhou Dynasty during the Spring an Autumn period, which I think the reference is on.
In addition, Sun Tzu is not actually his actual name, his birth name was Sun WU (Sun being his family name). Tzu(or Zi as it is pronounced in Chinese) is an honorific, meaning master.
In Zhou Dynasty, China runs on a feudal system where different kings/warlords pledge allegiance to the central government. This system eventually lead to a lengthy civil war (aka The Warring States), ending in 221 BC. The 3 Kingdoms’ Wu Kingdom (starts in 220 AD) almost 400 years later... The link to 3 Kingdoms would be a happy coincidence but the main focus here would be during Warring States period where Sun Tzu was from.

Hey Knox, I don’t comment on videos too often. But I just want to thank you for the breakdowns you and the other reactors do. The 10 months or so I’ve been watching got me from not listening to hiphop at all to mostly listening to hiphop. I got to some of eminem’s songs because of a youtube recommended streak when I was looking for new music. At that point I hadn’t given hiphop/rap a shot yet, first of all because my friends didn’t like it and second because English isn’t my first language so the lyrics were hard to catch. Eminem’s godzilla had me looking up reactions, just because of the speed eminem was going at. From there I found out there was so much more to it than the speed. I learned about the actual lyrics, double entendres, new artists etc. I spoke decent English a year ago but these things still flew over my head, now after listening for 10 months I can catch not only the lyrics but also bars and double entendres (not all of them ofc). So Knox if you’re reading this, thank you for the videos, not only for letting me appreciate hiphop/rap but also for the enjoyment I’ve had and still have watching them. Keep doing what you’re doing. 👊

I have watched three of your videos now, and you are SO well rounded! You match and sometimes exceed my k owledge of history. Im very excited to see how this one turns out and will edit when i finish!
Edit: "Rolling with the flyest nihilist" is awesome internal rhyme, lets not argue that much. The incredible internal rhyming of this whole thing!
