    11 guinea pigs for the price of one would sound like a good deal, but of course they shouldn't sell a pregnant guinea pig to begin with! Thank you for taking care of these small beauties.

      @@susannabonke8552 Yes I asked my daughter to look at our local humane society. If nothing else we will be looking for a companion at the pet shops. I have always been an advocate for going to Humane Society first if possible. In North Dakota we really don't have alot of guinea pigs for pets so I am almost positive we will be going to a pet store. Our new one is young so I always planned on getting her a companion but she was the only 1 left when we bought her.

    The shelter where I adopted my girls had a mama pig a few months back that also had 10 babies. Unfortunately only 8 of those babies survived. I had never heard of such a huge litter before.
    One of my guinea pigs has a similar story to these little guys. Someone got her from a local PetSmart and unknowingly housed her with a male. Once they realized she was pregnant they surrendered both she and the daddy pig to the shelter. She went on to have three babies, two boys and one girl. I adopted her and the girl.

  • @ericamerhoff9632

    Just some context, petsmart stores have “male” and “female” stores. If this Guinea pig was pregnant when bought it either 1) came in pregnant from the breeder or 2) the Guinea pigs weren’t checked properly when received and a male got put in with the group which should be reported to the store because that’s a HUGE mistake on whoever received the small animals. Unfortunately it’s incredibly possible the workers didn’t even know she was pregnant if she wasn’t showing when purchased. They are usually college kids that have the bare minimum of training and have to learn as they go as far as the animals in their care. There are guidelines and standards but none of those to my knowledge cover how to identify a pregnancy

    • @SoCalGuineaPigRescue
      @SoCalGuineaPigRescue  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I don't think any of us thought she got pregnant at the pet store and we don't blame the employees at all. In our opinion the bottom line is that pet stores should not sell animals. Instead they should partner with rescues and adopt out healthy, same sex or neutered/spayed singles and pairs. The breeder mills and animal dealers are horrific. If big chain pet stores cared about anything other than making money they would stop using them.
      The owner of this mama pig called petsmart to let them know that she had given birth and they wouldn't do anything about it. In the end I am glad they didn't tell her to bring the babies in because their fate would certainly been a sad one. Now at least we can assure that they won't be forced to breed, they will be adopted out to loving families who will give proper care and they'll have guinea pig companions.
      There will always be random backyard breeders and accidental pregnancies BUT if pet stores would just stop selling animals it would greatly help reduce the amount of unwanted animals that rescues like mine are having to deal with.

    Wow 10 babies 😮 I live in Scotland UK and got sold a pregnant piggie years ago . She had 3 babies but they was inbreeds and all had health issues 😔 Mokka was only 11 weeks old when I got here . Pet shops don't really care they sadly only see the money in them as the irresponsible breeders . I kept Mokka and her daughter moo but both battled so many health issues the 2 boys got rehomed because at that point I already had many males and they didn't accept the lil boys . I had by mistake one the situation myself with mis gender 2 piggies and she had 3 boys and 2 girls I kept and all boys were neutered as soon they could . I love your and saskias passion so much 🫶🫶

    • @SoCalGuineaPigRescue
      @SoCalGuineaPigRescue  Před 2 měsíci +2

      This is why we say adopt don't shop! Petsmart is absolutely responsible for this. The employees that sold the pig aren't to be blamed because it is not in their control. But the large chain pet stores like Petsmart are to blame when they sell sick or pregnant animals to the public.
      In California we have law AB 485, and that prohibits pet stores from selling dogs, cats, and rabbits unless they are obtained from a shelter or rescue. We would like to see that law amended to INCLUDE guinea pigs and other "pocket pets". We believe this would greatly help to reduce the population of unwanted animals.
