- Our days in the coldest time - the winter wonderland of Lapland holds a landscape of pristine, untouched beauty with meters thick snow. In this episode of Call of the North we journey through the heart of winter in Scandinavia. From the serene silence of Finnish Lapland to the surreal beauty of Swedish Lapland, we experience the magic of the polar night and the mesmerizing dance of the Northern Lights - the Aurora Borealis. Our road trip takes us from frozen lakes to snow-covered forests, where we encounter countless reindeers. Starting from Germany, we leave our transporter at home and come in a car more suited for the cold in the North. In Stockholm we fit the car with studded tires and move on with a ferry crossing to Turku in Finland, followed by a night train ride to Rovaniemi, Northern Finland. We spent Christmas in Finnish Lapland together with our friends and celebrate it in the Finnish way, enjoy countless saunas, cold plunges and simply appreciate the moment of being here. On good days we end up hiking and camping in the freezing cold but extremely beauty of Riisitunturi National Park, a real gem! In Swedish Lapland we venture through the wilds of the fjells on snowmobiles and have a tiny cabin in the middle of a frozen lake! Passing through Kiruna and Abisko we end in the picturesque village of Henningsvær.

@@Dodoa39 Thank you so much 🙏 I’ll try to post more regularly over the next months, got some more video projects that just need a final touch 😊 if I could only choose for one lens I would have gone with a 24-70mm 2.8 until recently, now canon released a 24-105 2.8 and that would probably my dream of a lens. The 24-105 range is amazing and so perfect for filming and photography

In previous parts, I saw that you were pitching tents somewhere in the mountains. Don’t you have it in Europe that you can only camp in certain places, otherwise you risk getting a big fine? In the countries of Eastern Europe, this is not so monitored, the main thing is that it does not harm the environment, so problems never arise, and the possibility of incurring expenses of this type due to ignorance of local regulations is a big danger for me, this will increase the already significant costs of the trip . I heard that, for example, in Germany you can’t even just stop near the road to sleep in the car. Thanks for the opportunity to ask questions and good luck!
@@auto_and_tourism Camping in the Nordics is usually allowed when you are outside private property with the allemannsretten (just google this word to get more information). But there are certain areas where local laws apply and you should check them always before going hiking and camping. Especially in Lofoten there are quite some restrictions for camping due to drinking water reservoirs and protected areas. In Finland we experienced that camping was only permitted near huts in a certain national park but as I said, just check these regulations on location. Otherwise in the rest of Europe it is usually permitted or very restricted and you can get a big fine. And true, in Germany it is very restricted but so far I haven't made any bad experiences. But we also don't do vanlife or camping on Germany.

Love your stunning, gorgeous videos, reminding my hubby and me of our visit last March to Northern Lights Village in Saariselkä, Lapland. Needless to say, we fell in love with Finland and the Finnish people, so smart, practical and hardworking. We learned how they care for their land and environment and how they practice ruthless efficiency and care in the use of their resources. Flying there to Ivalo from Helsinki during the night we saw miles and miles of lighted ski paths as they wound their way through the fells. When we landed in Ivalo, we were greeted with the stunning cleanliness of the airport and a sign proudly instructing us to drink the crystal clean water right from the public tap. From moment to moment, we were amazed and moved by the subtle culture of strength and determination as the Finnish live, work and play. happily in these brutal conditions.

As i live in Finland and got small cabin in the lapland i tend to see the winter time "just a winter". This made my eyes open again to the winter and its wonders. Thank you :D

@@DanielErnst I'm another Finn and I've found as I get older, my appreciation for the winter only grows. I loved winter as a child, but as a teen and very young adult, it seemed just another inconvenience to get through. Me and my friends had less energy, it was always cold and dark, and there were less things to do. Getting up at 6am in a dark and freezing cold winter morning for work or school was enough to make me beg for an early Spring. Now something has shifted and I've began to embrace it again, just seeing the beauty and alien landscapes of winter with new eyes, appreciating the cold, clean and fresh air in a world increasing haunted by global warming and pollution. Being up early and having those quiet dark morning moment to read or exercise, and see the sun only flirt with the horizon hours after you've awaken. In general, the winter is a season of peace, of silence, of meditation, occasional struggle and over-coming, and oddly enough, winter comes with a special feeling of warmth and intimacy too. Also nothing really feels as cozy as sitting by a warm fireplace indoors, with a mug Glögi in your hand, as a snowstorm hails outside.

Absolutely brilliant! The snow-covered trees are so incredibly beautiful. I can barely imagine how chilly it must have been to sleep in the tent among them but the shots are more than worth it. Did your car ever protest when the temperature dropped to -30 degrees?
Thank you so much Lucas 😊🙏 it’s such an incredible place up there! The car was always fine, we put a new starter battery in before the trip and made sure all liquids are rated to -60°C and it all worked out. The coldest was -36°C and the car stood still for 2 days - it sounded very strange when it started but it worked out 😂 we didn’t have any preheater or something on board but it’s a fairly new car. You just have to make sure to fuel up polar diesel or add additives, otherwise the diesel will freeze in the filter.
@@DanielErnst Holy moly, -36 degrees is properly cold. I am not sure our car would like that very much, even with all the right additives 😅 But that is very good to know for when we head north to experience this winter wonderland ourselves one day 🤩

I can only imagine how beatiful our Lapland looks from the eyes of a tourist. I've been so many times in Lapland and in my hometown I can experience similar winter to Lapland so I it doesn't feel for me anymore such an "unique" experience. However, I almost want to cry sometimes when driving by car to Lapland, when skiing on a resort or on cross-country ski tracks. The beauty of winter in Lapland is still just absolutely stunning.
I can imagine that you get used to these views when you live there! Coming from Germany we rarely experience a real winter with cold temperatures and a lot of snow. Usually it’s only rain and slush 🥲 so this makes us kind of freak out every time we visit 🥰

Come to think of it that there were local people who lived there farming, fishing, hunting, cutting trees and herding reindeer. No time to wonder around and enjoy the nature. Just hard work day in day out without the modern technology. They were hard people, real survivors.
That’s true, especially the Sami people living in their Lavvu with a whole family, a bunch of dogs and reindeer. Really interesting and fascinating 😮
Btw our dog is a breed that lived with the Sami back in the days herding reindeer. Also really interesting to read their stories too.

Dem kann ich voll beipflichten. Du hast Dir sehr viel Mühe gemacht und fantastische Bilder geschaffen mit oft sehr schöner Begleitmusik. Allerdings habe ich dann doch den Ton abgestellt, weil mir das viel zu viele und zu schnelle monoton-mechanische Sprechen die wunderbare Bildatmosphäre störte. Vielleicht einfach viel weniger und langsamer sprechen!?

Ich persönlich finde es nicht zu viel, da ich viel zu erzählen hatte von den Erlebnissen und viele Zuschauer gar nicht so das Wissen über Polarnacht etc. mitbringen. Ein letzter Punkt zur Stimme - die ist halt so 😁
