Toy Caldwell served 2 tours in Vietnam and was awarded 2 purple hearts 💜. This song is about his friends in the military who were receiving dear John letters from the wives while they where in Vietnam so toy wrote this song for them.
Toy lost both his younger brothers within a month of each other to car accidents. He was also a United States Marine Corps Vietnam War combat vet (WIA). That's him singing with incredible soul and thumb picking that beautiful Gibson Les Paul. Thank you for everything brother. Rest easy.
Toy Caldwell is the singer. Passed away 1993, Tommy Caldwell bass player died in a car accident 1980.
In 2000 I explanned to my 10 year old son that back in my day all 3 of the network channels went off the air at midnight. Since all we had were 3 channels that meant no TV after midnight! What shocked him the most was that there were only 3 channels to watch! He was raised on cable TV with around 100 channels. Then I told him when you wanted to change the channel you had to get up and actually turn the knob on the TV. My son's mind was blown!🤯💯🤭🤣❤️✌️

I grew up in the 90s in Mississippi and had a similar childhood. The only difference was instead of 3 channels we could get 4 channels. All of them still went off at midnight and if the President was making a speech then you were screwed lol.
"The Thundering Thumb" of Toy Caldwell is displayed so well at the start of the video . A Personal sad memory of The Marshall Tucker Band for me . Although the band would carry on , I was in the Audience for what I consider The Real Marshall Tucker Bands final performance at Long Island's Nassau Coliseum in April 1980 . It was the last show of their tour and just a few short weeks later Bassist Tommy Caldwell was killed in a car accident . If Brother Toy was the heart of the band Tommy was the soul and they we're never the same afterwards .
It’s so cool to see the younger generation exposed to such iconic music and to see them appreciate it so much. Southern rock is such a beautiful blend of blues, rock and country. And Marshall Tucker, along with the Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd, are the holy trinity of Southern Rock. This music is truly timeless. It was great 50 years ago. It’s great now. And it will still be great 50 years from now.
This is southern rock at it's finest. The flute solo at the beginning & end is great. Love their music from the 70's. Some of their other big hits were "Fire on the Mountain" & "Heard It in a Love Song". Southern rock fiddler Charlie Daniels did quite a few collaborations with them.

Marshall Tucker is still one of my favorite bands. Southern Rock was their genre. Glad to hear them on your channel.

One of my main biographical songs. After having you heart crushed and your mind twisted, getting away is all that you want to do. Toy Caldwell was a Viet Nam vet that could bring the emotion out to a southern rock song. This was recorded in black & white for a live TV show before everything went to color. MTB is right up there with other southern rock bands such as Skynyrd, Outlaws, and Allman Bros. They made flute playing cool just like Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull and Kansas did for the violin.
Yes, 5 years earlier, he was a young marine and was shot in the leg during a gun battle. They took him off to a hospital and were going to send him home but he snuck out and went back to his unit to finish his tour. Three other band members were also in the service during that time. After they all got home, the band was formed.
Unfortunately, tragedy began for the band. Toy's brother, the base player was killed in an auto accident in 1980 most of the original members left by the mid 80's, then Toy died in 1993 of cocaine induced heart attack, and rhythm guitar player George McCorkle passed away in 2007. The flutist, Jerry Eubanks retired in 1996. Marshall Tucker still records to this day with the only original member left, Doug Gray.

This sounds just like the radio version because unlike most bands they didn't add a bunch of studio effects that couldn't be duplicated on stage , they kept their music raw and clean . Donna , the lead singer's name was Toy Caldwell . I was hoping that you'd get around to Marshall Tucker . Those I Love Lucy reruns were filmed in the mid fifties , hence the black and white

This is just different enough from the studio version to know it’s legitimately live, but just as good or better. Today’s “artists” can only wish they had this much talent.
Im 58 and i remember black and white tv. Some things were better the old ways in general. Including music !

Note : I believe Toy Caldwell brother was killed in a auto accident, Toy was also received a purple heart in the Vietnam war .

This song is awesome
One of the best of the "Southern Rock" bands of the 1970's, they were from Spartanburg, SC and remained there to this day. Refusing to move to LA, like their friends from Lynard Skynard and the Charlie Daniels Band tried to get them to do... many believe not making those contacts have kept them out of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The lead singer, and guitar player is Toy Caldwell. He served as a Marine in Vietnam, before co-founding the group. His playing style was different because he did not use a pick, just his thumb to play.
I delivered bottle water out of Greenville, SC in late 80s to early 90s, and Toy was my customer. I never met him, but I went to deliver on the morning after he passed in his sleep. Doug Grey, the tambotine player and sometimes lead singer met me at the door to give me the sad news that morning.

His name was Toy Caldwell, and he died in 1980 in a car wreck. Great band.
Toy's brother, Tommy the base player, died in a car wreck around 1980. Toy died in the early 90s. Toy and Tommy were in Vietnam and Toy was injured but return. They had a younger brother who died in another car wreck about a month before Tommy died in his car wreck.

This performance was at the Grand Opera House in Macon, Georgia. Headlining the 1973 Don Kirschner's Music Rock Concert TV program was the Allman Brothers. Wet Willie also performed that night in addition to Martin Mull. The performers were "All Capricorn Recording" There is a color version on YT that doesn't have the silent moment. Online one can find an image of the "vintage" poster and other advertisements of the event. Jimmy Hall, lead singer for Wet Willie, is the individual standing while clapping at the beginning.

I'm a Florida boy from the 70's and being a teen then this group was one of the 8 tracks in the backseat of my 63 Pontiac temptist, great reaction ladies.
This opera house was in Macon, GA. The band, from Spartanburg, SC, played around the Macon area in the early to mid '70s along with Allman Brothers Band, Wet Willie and others promoting the southern rock sound.
Toy was a US Marine and fought in Vietnam came home and started this band that was one of the best Southern Rock bands

A Marshall Tucker classic that everyone should check out is, "In my own way." The musicianship is phenomenal. "Take the highway" is another I highly recommend.

The Marshall Tucker Band is southern rock at its finest! I've been a fan since the early 70s. I was fortunate to see them perform at the Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino California, in 1978.
Brings back 1976 to me. I had a ton of 8 track tapes but the three that got the most play in my car was Marshall Tucker, Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix. Thanks for the great reaction.

A Southern Rock Staple, MTB and "Can't You See", with the late/great Toy Cadwell on guitar and vocals. Saw them live on concert on numerous occasions in the late 1970's -early 1980's and they never disappointed.

Well, I have to comment again CZcams has suspended my old account. This was live at The Grand Opera House at Mercer University Macon GA. I have seen them countless times live too. Been so close at the stage LOL felt Toys spit. Sad, he died on cocaine ingestion in 1993. I am a Southern boy born and raise. LOL I am eating a Slim Jim. I grew up with Black and White TV with antennas watching Carolina Blue Heels Basketball games. The first I heard of color was something you put over the TV screen. Now only memories.,

L.O.V.E. MTB. That's Toy Caldwell (the fastest thumb in the south). Toy was the primary songwriter of the group. Next to hm is his brother Tommy on bass. Jerry Eubanks on flute. Doug Gray is on the far end and sang lead on most MTB songs. Paul Riddle on drums. George McCorkle played rhythm guitar. MTB blended several genres into their unique Southern Rock sound. I highly recommend the album "Carolina Dreams". ("Fire On The Mountain" album title track is also great.) A lot to love with MTB.

They didnt make dedicated music videos till later in the seventies , and I'm old enough to remember only 2 channels and then ABC was added... color TV was new in in 1960 I think..the wonderful worald of color, disney.. then bonansa...
This is before “music videos” but not before ‘promotional videos’ which were the older things that later gave rise to music videos.
Filming in black and white in the mid to late 70s would have been an artistic choice as most things were easily filmed in color since the late 50s/early 60s on film and (surprise! …even VHS recordings from the early 70s…also full color). So, yeah. Just FYI. 🙂
I recall having only 3 channels. No TV after midnight. 2 am or so on Friday and Saturday.
And a priest would say a prayer before the channels signed off. Then the National Anthem was played, along with a video showing America's greatness. When we bought a "clicker" -- what we called a "remote" back then -- for our TV, we thought we had arrived !! The thing felt like it weighed a pound, and the buttons actually made a "clicking" sound when you pressed them. Great memories. Y'all are the best. Keep the videos coming.

The Marshall Tucker Band is one of my all time favorite bands. If you notice Toy plucks the strings with his thumb rather than a guitar pick.

The name "Lulu" reminds me of an old 45 I heard as a kid and the singer's name was Lulu. That is an awesome name in today's blah world. I think you'd fit right in with the jam band crowds. This is one of my favorite songs to play at open jams , I do take some artistic license with the solo.
I got to see them at Harrah's Lake Tahoe just before the world ended and they killed.
Needless to say, the ones still alive are a lot older now

They took their name from the old farmer that allowed them to use his garage for practice. The Van Zandt boys are the two lead singers. Maybe the best country rock band in American history unless you count the Eagles.

Actually, they got the name from a blind piano tuner named Marshall Tucker that rented them a place in Spartanburg to practice and they saw his name on the key chain and decided to just use that name as Toy said in an interview on The Bobby Bare Show.
