@@Aparnasewwandi2016bruhhh even if the British didn’t capture us for 200 years, think of our situation now in the world. We should still learn English in order to communicate with foreigners or are you saying that if England didn’t capture us, we’d have made Hindi as a common language across the world? Why nobody seems to understand that the only reason we speak in English is because there was no common thread helping us in communication. And when there is diversity you need some common traits attributable to both sides which helps them in communication. Thinking Hindi can be an only official language when what call you india also encompasses to the regions who don't have Hindi language is just not right. So, in that case what will you have. English did just that.

  • @ybt595

The sad reality is English is not just a language in India it's the symbol of class.
I agree that we have hundreds of languages and we need something common to communicate, and English is the best language to learn as it can open the doors for opportunities abroad as well.
But the problem is when people are treated differently just because they cannot speak English. To add, when I was not good at English, be it at writing or speaking, my peers made fun of me in college and often made me feel inferior. I have seen this happening to many who, just like me, come from a small town/village and have yet to have an opportunity to practice their English. It's a big shame when I see this happening repeatedly, and no one actually talks about it.
Now, having travelled or lived in Countries in East Asia and North America, I can say that people from other countries are actually more proud to speak their own language than most Indians (Not all). We as Indians should learn English to function well and grow in this modern world but also treat it as a language only and stop discriminating against those who can't speak it because it's not our language in the first place ❤

I understand and somewhat agree with your point of view but this one-sided notion that people get discriminated against only because they can’t speak or speak poor English has to stop. There is PLENTY of discrimination the other way around and it is almost NEVER addressed. Paternally, I come from a very rural family. Out of nearly 30 people, I was the first guy who grew up in a relatively large city, studied in a proper English medium school and could speak crisp, fluent English (with an Indian higher income group city accent of course, not like some westerner) since I was a kid. I have also lived in hostels with people from both north Indian and south Indian rural areas. I also interact with the “broken English but good vernacular/pidgin” batch on social media. The trash that people talk about us is limitless. I have experienced it in my own family and also outside. “Angrej ka aulad”, “macaulay ka baccha”, “kanjra”, “angreji ghulami ki maansik rogi”, “colonial mentality” (the true colonial mentality is with the English-weak batch. They want to be able to control us, make us share their insecurities, think and speak just like them in languages that THEY prefer) and what not. I’ve been threatened by guys in hostels “angreji baath karna hai tho dhoor jaake baath kar varna…”, been called all sorts of names, not for speaking English WITH people who prefer other languages, but simply around them with someone else. Indian people who have this disdain for their fluent English speaking counterparts are not uneducated either. Many of them are perfectly well educated and have degrees in engineering, medicine, commerce, law etc., sometimes up to the Ph.D or equivalent level. But these are people who have or at one point had poor English fluency and hence they despise Indians to whom it comes more naturally. Comments like “haha, look those English speaking guys are in useless departments and our vernacular guys are in top departments” etc. are things you hear from medical and engineering professors and colleagues alike. Funny, because a large chunk of their textbooks are written by foreign authors from English speaking countries. This sort of mentality damages our careers and lives also.
Also, this constant junk about “English is being imposed, education is being denied to non-English students” and then talking about China, Russia and Japan (as if our social contexts are the same as theirs), and being reminded “English is only a language, not knowledge” like the vernacular medium students are all award winning intellectuals is ridiculous. We have a Hindi vaala PM, Hindi vaala home minister, Malayalam ISRO chief, vernacular papers sell like hot cakes, most of Indian CZcams is in vernacular languages, most parliamentary debates are in vernacular languages, there are news channels in every major vernacular language and once you get out of Tier-1 and the larger Tier-2 cities, most correspondence is also in vernacular languages. I have people in own family who studied in vernacular language schools and reached high positions in both the private and govt. sector. No one stopped them from being successful (and yes, they learnt English later). And still we have to listen to the aforementioned rubbish. You can’t start a bloody Indian English channel on CZcams with someone not writing garbage about the fact that the channel is in English and insulting the presenters on the channel, DESPITE the fact that most channels are in vernacular languages. All of today’s English speaking Indians are children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of people from rural areas who studied in vernacular language schools and many of whom couldn’t speak more than a few broken sentences (if at all) in English. Resenting and insulting us will do no one any good. If not people's kids, their grandkids will be like us one day. And if they migrate to other countries, they’ll be even more Englishy than us. If they hate us, good luck to them when it comes to handling their own future generations.

I feel like English is also important as a fact that it is universal and basically it is easier to translated in the form of other language ( Though leaving their charm major problem of translation) but you have to accept that there are not many people who can like pick a language and learn it easily as others and for a particular niche thing also and then having no use of it. So by having a magical translator tool like in cartoons English helps us to filter education and entertainment by a large magnitude and making the speaker's proficient around that thing. Also a main critique about English teaching in India is that they generally sometimes does not push you speak and the courses are not around making your vocabulary strong and thus using the most basic terms or not knowing most of the time what the word is needed there and this makes us be profoundly conscious about our English speaking skills and in turn greatly decreasing the main key thing that is confidence

And funniest thing is people who are saying "English is colonial language you should not learn" actually that people learned english and they will stop you when you are learning English. And English don't replace anyone's language and infact only 10%(already mentioned in video) people speak english did anyone forgot their mother language?(locally not in foreign) Never! If you compare with Hindi today more than 40% of population speaking it. And It also many old languages and dialects destroyed by Hindi and many will gone. Giving importance only certain set of people it will become advantage that group think like this if one person learned everything in Hindi and another person learned in non-Hindi language and they attend the exam like UPSC and one guy attend the exam in Hindi and another guy attend in English guess what? who will score better the Hindi guy. So instead of conducting in every Indian languages we can only conduct in English. How Brits impossed language on us the same thing is happening all over India in the name of Hindi and without diversity this country will become Hindia. Just think in this perspective if you are native Hindi speaker and imagine govt say everyone you should learn you should learn Marathi or Tamil. Hindi is not national language! And there is no national language. And worse thing is Hyderabad or Mumbai or Bangalore you can't even use mother tongue(many places like in shops, public transport, and in Airport only Hindi and English). And if you are still thinking English is destroying Indian languages, Hindi is doing it in another level! Respect every language, Respect everyone.

In these 12 years the percentage has increased for sure. Also, I agree that Hindi destroyed Indian languages but in present times that's not the case. Even Hindi is considered language of illiterate by people nowadays. Also, for Mumbai it's not that you can't use Marathi, the thing is that most people there are not Maharashtrians, similar situation for Bengaluru. The point is that English is no more a symbol of colonialism, but more of a language for international business. Having such a high number of English speakers definitely gives us an inherent advantage over countries like China in world trade, and it's not just me saying it, go to any international media and see the factors they list as India's advantages over China. It is easier to do business with us because of our English proficiency. But having said that, I also believe that we should be proud of our own mother tongues and use it more in our daily lives as well, since it's a question of our culture, history and tradition that defines who we are.

My mother tongue is Telugu. I did primary education in Telugu medium & switched to English medium in High school. I went in to work in North India & now i am fluent in 3 great languages. This has opened so many doors for me.
Mai bina hindi bhi North me survive toh kar saktha tha lekin flourish hone ke liye Hindi seekhna hi pada majboori me.
But nobody should be forced into learning a language. It should be optional but very should be encouraged to learn at least basic Hindi & English. That being said, Mother Tongue should be made mandatory till 10th standard at least.
