Don't they reconcile at the end when they make it back to Earth. I believe there's a scene where they embrace or something at the end when Earth is saved. I liked that part.

Me watching a movie more than 5 times doesn't mean I actually like it, I just used to watch everything that wasn't super old.
I love your insight on this movie. I love what you do. The truth is, this movie is supposed to make you feel proud to be an American, or wherever you are from. It's about doing what is right to save humanity. Something that has been totally lost in today's reality.

Here's two more --- 1) Michael Bay was completely confused by Criterion's decision to make an Armageddon release; he was proud when he found out that they were making one for The Rock, but his response to Armageddon getting one was more or less: ".......why?" Supposedly Criterion decided this because Armageddon was the first mega-hit that incorporated a lot of the overly-kinetic visual trappings that, at the time were unique, but only a decade later were pretty much commonplace. 2) They didn't know who to cast for the role of Bear, when Michael Bay just happened to see Michael Clarke Duncan at the gym and approached him about it. Because this later got Duncan numerous roles including The Green Mile, which won him a Saturn Award, he was actually happy to make an extended cameo for Bay's later film: The Island.
Can you imagine being one of the few who came back? As the one female astronaut said in Deep Impact - “Well, we’ll all have High Schools named after us.” But the rest of their lives as Owen Wilson’s character said “True blue hero stuff.” You’d never have to pay for a drink again.

A movie where Bruce Willis meets a younger version of himself? Yeah, I remember that, it's called 'Looper' and it's a pretty good movie. Also: Teaching astronauts to use a big drill is the original plan in the movie, but Bruce Willis' character demands to do the job with his own crew or he'd walk, and that's how we get drillers going into space.
I've gotta admit, when I heard about Affleck asking that, I was, like, "Dude, it's explained in the movie. Or did you only read your lines?" Could you train astronauts to drill (and do it well)? Yes. But it will take time and it's not like there's a school for that. On the other hand, there is a way to train people to be astronauts. There's a fun story about the Moon landings where astronauts didn't know anything about geology so they would bring back "boring" rocks. So they spent months training the Apollo 16 astronauts about geology so they could have some idea of what the scientists were looking for. Now, in the movie, they had something like 78 days(?) 'til the astroid hit. Probably not enough time to teach astronauts how to drill.
To be honest, I never heard any of the critic's comments at the time, I was blown away by this movie it was transformers 8 years later since my head was wracked with so much going on, on-screen. I just loved it. I laughed, I cried what more could you want its over 2 hrs of solid gold, I still watch it today
I'm not much a fan of "Armageddon," but I did love the character that Steve Buscemi played. He always seemed to have the right, if not the most "under the circumstances" realistic, ideas and mindset throughout the film.
Great review always. Sometimes it is nice to watch a fun, escapist movie. Nothing heavy or thought provoking just something you can kick back and watch, while relaxing for an hour or two. Keep up the good work, Minty.
This was a silly fun, movie. The CGI is dated but pretty, the side characters are hilarious, and the action scenes are great. Plus, it led Michael Clark Duncan to the Green Mile.
To put that into definition, a lot of the time CGI seems dated, but not all the time, is not so much the effects themselves but the quality of display is increasingly getting better. For example this movie was released in 1998. Flat screen CRT'S (Cathode Ray Tubes aka the big boxy televisions) anyone older than 25 would remember was in most homes Playing any CGI movie designed for a CRT on a modern 8K television or even a 1080i will look laughable if not pitiful

Hi from Athens Greece! I always loved that movie! Its one of my favourites! Back in 1998 i was serving in the army and i took a few days off to go at cinema and watch Armageddon and Lethal Weapon 4 back to back! Until today, this is my biggest cinema pleasure EVER!
One interesting song I noticed on the soundtrack was a cover of the 60s classic "Leaving on a Jet Plane", in this case recorded by Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk. Considering the nature of the movie, I guess it fits. I still hear that version on the radio once in a while here in Canada.

I loved this movie I think it’s one of the greatest movies of all time, great all star cast, top notch film production quality and great choices of songs used in the film.
Oh yeah... this movie is such a guilty pleasure for so many of us, including myself. Bay is probably one of the luckiest film directors there is, not because he's good at his job, but because people let him do whatever he pleases, because most of his movies are popcorn blockbusters, which bring lots of money to the studios. It's like they once said: "If it's a Bay movie, it'll probably bad as Hell, but it'll bring in lots of cash, because most people love bad movies." I, myself don't dislike him totally... I mean, he did a couple of good movies, but I think everything he touches, he ends up ruining it, sooner or later (we saw that with the Transformers movies) just like J.J. Abrams. For all that is worth, Armageddon was probably the worst sci-fi movie ever made in the 90's, but at the same time, it was also one of the biggest and best action movies of the late 90's. It had a great cast, filled with numerous superstars (actors and actresses that were already big names in the industry, or that would become later on), amazing special effects that still hold pretty good (you can see that Disney spent a lot of money on those special effects) and a great soundtrack, courtesy of Aerosmith. And regarding Bruce's legal trouble with Disney, I knew that he had been forced to do Armageddon and The Kid for Disney, but I didn't know The Sixth Element was part of that agreement. Still, all's well when ends well, because it was due to the Sixth Sense, that he would end up scoring the lead part in "The Protector" (and its sequel "Glass"), and it was due to Armageddon that when Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller developed Sin City, he got the part of Hartigan (initially they wanted Michael Douglas for the part, but he refused), because Tarantino (with whom Bruse worked on Pulp Fiction), suggested him to the other two, because he had loved him on Armageddon and didn't shut up about it, leading to Rodriguez and MIller contacting him for the part.
To me, the playful banter of the oilers saved the movie. I couldn't watch it without the snarky commentary. And Billy Bob Thornton. He's ALWAYS hilarious.
There's a scene in Armageddon that shows the Twin Towers of The World Tade Center in flames with smoke pouring out of one of them. Scary foreshadowing as this was released in 1998.
I recently discovered your channel a few days ago and i absoloutley love it!!!! I thought of two movies you should do.. Bonfire Of The Vanities and High Spirits, High Spirits is another comedy/horror from 1988. it has Steve Guttenburg, Daryl Hannah and a very young Liam Neeson. Seems right up your alley of the type of movie you would make a video about it and im surprised you havent already! Bonfire Of The Vanities is also a very underrated gem that critics hated but I thought it was great, way ahead of its time and has aged really well.
watched this again for the 20th time the other night. this film is a masterpiece imo. its one of those films where if you go into it expecting nothing, you will get everything.

For a couple of years Hollywood had a habit of making 2 films based around the same thing. In 2000 we had Red Planet and Mission to Mars. Both centred around Mars.
You know, if Harry (Bruce Willis) had waited even just a tiny BILLISECOND, before detonating the nuke, sacrificing himself, and blowing the asteroid to Kingdome Come, he would have taken the world's population WITH him!
I remember a time when Diane Warren was turning out pop song after pop song after pop song and they were in practically every single 80s and 90s soundtrack and played on practically every single radio station on the planet.
I would use the "all go, no quit big nuts Harry Stamper needs my help" line all the time while in the Army whenever a NCO needed my help. Replacing Harry Stamper with the NCOs name. It always got a laugh.
THey obviously did that for comedy & drama elements...really on purpose...but believe it or not...Drilling is a very tough job & does require intelligence to keep those rigs working & one mistake just like a spacestation...you are fuked lol.
I remember them filming the hangar scenes at Edwards AFB when I was stationed there. Lots of movies/shows filmed on base and in the surrounding areas. Wasn't uncommon for roads to be closed due to filming.
After Bad Boys I was a Micheal Bay fan. The Rock...rocked hard. But man, Armageddon blew everything out of the sky. Over the top, loud and fast, it is everything you want in a Saturday evening film. And that scene in the end, after they returned to earth, the "right stuff" walk, where there are a number of gaps, it gets me every time.

He's probably better with dialogue than George Lucas. And he's a great visual director. What he can't do is create original concepts. I wish Lucas had created the sequel trilogy concept, written a fast draft script and then JJ could have improved it
I saw this one in theaters when it came out. I like it. It's one of those, if I happen to see it on TV, I'll sit and watch it. But, like Michael Bay's other one Pearl Harbor, I could have done without the romance stuff.
I absolutely love this movie, it's one of my all time favorites. Went to see it in the theatre, bought the VHS copy and still own a DVD copy now. The cast was stellar, I mean besides all the ones you mentioned you also had William Fichtner, Will Patton, Peter Stomare, Jason Isaacs and a former President’s son (I'll let you guess that one). I was already a Affleck fan because of Kevin Smith and this movie just made me like him even more.
I was 20 when this movie came out and my then boyfriend, me and his best friend saw it at the theater 3 times. 🤣 We couldn't get enough. Smh. I will still watch it when it when it comes on and cry every time. 🤣🤣🤣
Fun facts: Even though they had a lot of popular songs, Aerosmith's "I don't want to miss a thing," was their only #1 single... ever. The Space Shuttle launch scene where two shuttles launched at the same time in short planning, critics laughed it off. Fast-forward to now when SpaceX not only has landed multiple booster rockets backwards on land simultaneously from their Falcon Heavy launches, but also has record turnaround time for re-launches and launch cadence in general. If a meteor were headed towards Earth and timeliness was of the essence, one could imagine that certain risks would be waived and things like this could be accelerated even more if needed (if you had nothing to lose anyway why not). When going to the movies to see an action blockbuster, most people want to escape their weekly grind and be entertained. Armageddon did that for the time. The fact that critics dove deep into details of the meteor like "he said it was the size of Texas," come on, it's a movie, not a documentary. That's like watching Gran Torino and then complaining that the movie was bogus because the car in the movie wasn't environmentally friendly.
I know it is a silly movie but I still love it. I can clearly remember going to see this with my highschool best friend and our girlfriends and trying not to cry in front of the girls. I can even remember where we were sitting in the theater. Great times
Both "my heart will go on" & "I don't wanna miss a thing" ignite such wonderful nostalgic feelings & memories for me. Especially "my heart will go on", which was played at my 8th grade dance. However, till this day, I still haven't watched Armageddon, & don't feel much need to, lol. Now that I know that Micheal Bay directed it, I'm probably gonna continue to stay away, lol.

I have the Criteon collection DVD. The main difference are a few extra scenes like Harry visiting his dad before the mission. Which he repeats in his goodbye to Grace.
I do wish escapism would come back. People claim to hate the world we live in, but when they watch entertainment they want it realistic. You can't have your cake and eat it too
What I love about this movie is not the aeronautical piece. It is the concept of humankind first, and the father/daughter montage (which understandably is subjective).
Ok I'm not gonna lie, I loved this movie, it's silly, over the top, dumb fun action but also, and I can't believe I'm going to say this, but the ending actually made me tear up a little, when the colonel says "permission to shake the hand of the daughter of the bravest man I've ever known" man that hits you in the all the feely places haha.
The Criterion Collection is an extended cut which is, in my opinion, better than the theatrical cut. I think they need to release this cut on Blu-ray/4k

This was a silly fun, movie. The CGI is dated but pretty, the side characters are hilarious, and the action scenes are great. Plus, it led Michael Clark Duncan to the Green Mile.

To put that into definition, a lot of the time CGI seems dated, but not all the time, is not so much the effects themselves but the quality of display is increasingly getting better. For example this movie was released in 1998. Flat screen CRT'S (Cathode Ray Tubes aka the big boxy televisions) anyone older than 25 would remember was in most homes Playing any CGI movie designed for a CRT on a modern 8K television or even a 1080i will look laughable if not pitiful

My best part of the movie, when they walk past the two SR-71 blackbirds at Edwards AFB in Cali. The only two that were still active at the time.

Hi from Athens Greece! I always loved that movie! Its one of my favourites! Back in 1998 i was serving in the army and i took a few days off to go at cinema and watch Armageddon and Lethal Weapon 4 back to back! Until today, this is my biggest cinema pleasure EVER!

One interesting song I noticed on the soundtrack was a cover of the 60s classic "Leaving on a Jet Plane", in this case recorded by Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk. Considering the nature of the movie, I guess it fits. I still hear that version on the radio once in a while here in Canada.

You got me laughing out loud when you were quoting the stars and said, "Owen Wilson said, 'WOW'". Spot on! We actually LOVED Armageddon and had watched it many times over again. Haven't seen it in years but I will now.
Armageddon is one of Michael Bays classics for me it's the ultimate feel good epic destruction awesome disaster movie and probably the only fun space movie we'll ever see Michael Bay make I doubt he'll ever make a movie like this again also I love Steve Buscemi in this movie one of his most Iconic hilarious roles Imo
I loved this movie I think it’s one of the greatest movies of all time, great all star cast, top notch film production quality and great choices of songs used in the film.
I'm pretty sure that if this movie was made back in the 50s it would be in everyone's scifi collection and hailed as a classic.

Oh yeah... this movie is such a guilty pleasure for so many of us, including myself. Bay is probably one of the luckiest film directors there is, not because he's good at his job, but because people let him do whatever he pleases, because most of his movies are popcorn blockbusters, which bring lots of money to the studios. It's like they once said: "If it's a Bay movie, it'll probably bad as Hell, but it'll bring in lots of cash, because most people love bad movies." I, myself don't dislike him totally... I mean, he did a couple of good movies, but I think everything he touches, he ends up ruining it, sooner or later (we saw that with the Transformers movies) just like J.J. Abrams.
For all that is worth, Armageddon was probably the worst sci-fi movie ever made in the 90's, but at the same time, it was also one of the biggest and best action movies of the late 90's. It had a great cast, filled with numerous superstars (actors and actresses that were already big names in the industry, or that would become later on), amazing special effects that still hold pretty good (you can see that Disney spent a lot of money on those special effects) and a great soundtrack, courtesy of Aerosmith.
And regarding Bruce's legal trouble with Disney, I knew that he had been forced to do Armageddon and The Kid for Disney, but I didn't know The Sixth Element was part of that agreement. Still, all's well when ends well, because it was due to the Sixth Sense, that he would end up scoring the lead part in "The Protector" (and its sequel "Glass"), and it was due to Armageddon that when Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller developed Sin City, he got the part of Hartigan (initially they wanted Michael Douglas for the part, but he refused), because Tarantino (with whom Bruse worked on Pulp Fiction), suggested him to the other two, because he had loved him on Armageddon and didn't shut up about it, leading to Rodriguez and MIller contacting him for the part.
To me, the playful banter of the oilers saved the movie. I couldn't watch it without the snarky commentary.
And Billy Bob Thornton. He's ALWAYS hilarious.
There's a scene in Armageddon that shows the Twin Towers of The World Tade Center in flames with smoke pouring out of one of them. Scary foreshadowing as this was released in 1998.
I recently discovered your channel a few days ago and i absoloutley love it!!!! I thought of two movies you should do.. Bonfire Of The Vanities and High Spirits, High Spirits is another comedy/horror from 1988. it has Steve Guttenburg, Daryl Hannah and a very young Liam Neeson. Seems right up your alley of the type of movie you would make a video about it and im surprised you havent already! Bonfire Of The Vanities is also a very underrated gem that critics hated but I thought it was great, way ahead of its time and has aged really well.
watched this again for the 20th time the other night. this film is a masterpiece imo. its one of those films where if you go into it expecting nothing, you will get everything.

The only song more synonymous with a movie than I Don't want to Miss a thing would be kissed from a rose on the gray by Seal. You couldn't go anywhere or do anything without hearing it leading up to Batman Forever.
This movie is definitely a movie that hasn't aged well in special effects but I find it so funny in parts, my favorite is The Russian astronaut with Ben and Michael clarke Duncan (R.I.P. Mr Duncan)..

I always wondered why "Deep Impact" and "Armageddon" were so similar. Given they were released so close together, I wondered if it was just a coincidence or if one movie's plot was somehow plagiarized from the other one. Thanks for that clarification!

For a couple of years Hollywood had a habit of making 2 films based around the same thing. In 2000 we had Red Planet and Mission to Mars. Both centred around Mars.
You know, if Harry (Bruce Willis) had waited even just a tiny BILLISECOND, before detonating the nuke, sacrificing himself, and blowing the asteroid to Kingdome Come, he would have taken the world's population WITH him!
I remember a time when Diane Warren was turning out pop song after pop song after pop song and they were in practically every single 80s and 90s soundtrack and played on practically every single radio station on the planet.

I would use the "all go, no quit big nuts Harry Stamper needs my help" line all the time while in the Army whenever a NCO needed my help. Replacing Harry Stamper with the NCOs name. It always got a laugh.
What ruined it for me was someone saying wouldn't it be easier to train astronauts to drill than train drillers to be astronauts
well, they sent a crew if astronauts and drillers, they just had to teach the driller the basics to survive in space
Yeah but filming scenes of astronauts learning how to drill wouldn't be nearly as epic as the other way
THey obviously did that for comedy & drama elements...really on purpose...but believe it or not...Drilling is a very tough job & does require intelligence to keep those rigs working & one mistake just like a spacestation...you are fuked lol.
Can still remember seeing it in theaters. The launch scene blew my mind at the time. Sounded amazing.

I remember watching this on VHS at a friends house and holding back tears when Bruce stayed behind. Still love this movie.
I remember them filming the hangar scenes at Edwards AFB when I was stationed there. Lots of movies/shows filmed on base and in the surrounding areas. Wasn't uncommon for roads to be closed due to filming.
After Bad Boys I was a Micheal Bay fan. The Rock...rocked hard. But man, Armageddon blew everything out of the sky. Over the top, loud and fast, it is everything you want in a Saturday evening film. And that scene in the end, after they returned to earth, the "right stuff" walk, where there are a number of gaps, it gets me every time.

I saw this one in theaters when it came out. I like it. It's one of those, if I happen to see it on TV, I'll sit and watch it. But, like Michael Bay's other one Pearl Harbor, I could have done without the romance stuff.
I absolutely love this movie, it's one of my all time favorites. Went to see it in the theatre, bought the VHS copy and still own a DVD copy now. The cast was stellar, I mean besides all the ones you mentioned you also had William Fichtner, Will Patton, Peter Stomare, Jason Isaacs and a former President’s son (I'll let you guess that one). I was already a Affleck fan because of Kevin Smith and this movie just made me like him even more.
I was 20 when this movie came out and my then boyfriend, me and his best friend saw it at the theater 3 times. 🤣 We couldn't get enough. Smh. I will still watch it when it when it comes on and cry every time. 🤣🤣🤣
Fun facts: Even though they had a lot of popular songs, Aerosmith's "I don't want to miss a thing," was their only #1 single... ever.
The Space Shuttle launch scene where two shuttles launched at the same time in short planning, critics laughed it off. Fast-forward to now when SpaceX not only has landed multiple booster rockets backwards on land simultaneously from their Falcon Heavy launches, but also has record turnaround time for re-launches and launch cadence in general. If a meteor were headed towards Earth and timeliness was of the essence, one could imagine that certain risks would be waived and things like this could be accelerated even more if needed (if you had nothing to lose anyway why not).
When going to the movies to see an action blockbuster, most people want to escape their weekly grind and be entertained. Armageddon did that for the time. The fact that critics dove deep into details of the meteor like "he said it was the size of Texas," come on, it's a movie, not a documentary. That's like watching Gran Torino and then complaining that the movie was bogus because the car in the movie wasn't environmentally friendly.
I know it is a silly movie but I still love it. I can clearly remember going to see this with my highschool best friend and our girlfriends and trying not to cry in front of the girls. I can even remember where we were sitting in the theater. Great times

Both "my heart will go on" & "I don't wanna miss a thing" ignite such wonderful nostalgic feelings & memories for me. Especially "my heart will go on", which was played at my 8th grade dance. However, till this day, I still haven't watched Armageddon, & don't feel much need to, lol. Now that I know that Micheal Bay directed it, I'm probably gonna continue to stay away, lol.
This movie is definitely on my top 10 "Shut your brain off movie" . Starship Troopers will always be my first lol

I have the Criteon collection DVD. The main difference are a few extra scenes like Harry visiting his dad before the mission. Which he repeats in his goodbye to Grace.

This movie is like Halloween, you can tell how fun someone is by how much they enjoy it.
What I love about this movie is not the aeronautical piece. It is the concept of humankind first, and the father/daughter montage (which understandably is subjective).

Ok I'm not gonna lie, I loved this movie, it's silly, over the top, dumb fun action but also, and I can't believe I'm going to say this, but the ending actually made me tear up a little, when the colonel says "permission to shake the hand of the daughter of the bravest man I've ever known" man that hits you in the all the feely places haha.

The Criterion Collection is an extended cut which is, in my opinion, better than the theatrical cut. I think they need to release this cut on Blu-ray/4k

I actually went to see the film twice in 2 days. I went to see it on my birthday in the afternoon. I went round my sisters for a birthday party and my auntie turned up saying she had tickets for us to go see it. I didn't have the heart to say I had already seen it. So the next day I watched it again with my auntie. Here is another one that could be number 11.
11. The film cost Bruce Willis his marriage. He was married to Demi Moore when he made the film. But during production Bruce Willis and Liv Tyler had an affair. Demi Moore found out about it and it ended their marriage.
I loved this movie. The epitome of summer popcorn blockbuster fun.
