    My mother had a 1971 VW Bus with a 1600 dual port engine. You couldn't keep a set of exhaust valves in the engine. In 137,000 miles she had a valve get sucked down into the engine three times. A mechanic caught a fourth attempt just in time when the compression was low. Her bus was a lemon, and the family never bought Volkswagen again. She also had a 1965 split window bus that was super reliable, and had a lot more miles on it that she liked better.

      Bet she didn't adjust them every 3k miles bet it was also number 3 each time

      @@pilot41186She did have the valves and oil changed every 3,000 miles. Also she had the engine tuned up every 12,000 miles. She only used Bosch plugs. It was #3 valve every time. After 4 enginesnn she did get rid of it. Her 1965 split window bus had a 1500 engine, and it never had that problem. The 1965 was kept for another 15 years after the 1971 bay window bus was long gone. We all liked the split window bus better than the bay window bus too.
      Her Volkswagen mechanic who was also a neighbor who lived in the community said they all would drop a valve into the number 3 cylinder. He explained how Volkswagen changed the size of the engine, and did not change the size of the valves from a smaller engine. He said the dual port heads tended to overheat, and that was how the problem started. Many people who had these during the day they were on the road also installed aftermarket external oil coolers to try and keep the engines and valves cooler. In 1972 Volkswagen came out with the 1776 motor, and our mechanic said they finally incorporated a oil cooler inside the fan shroud to cool the engine.

    When performances, consum or equipment are not important. Only drive a slow and noisy masterpiece of automotion. Good test!!!!

    Not bad at all for a 50 plus year old vehicle. I saw the autobahn drive video and became greatly surprised to see this bus reach nearly 70 miles per hour (110 kph) in a relatively effortless way.

    • @TESTDRIVEFREAK
      @TESTDRIVEFREAK  Před rokem +2

      It can reach 120 kmh no effort but the engine rpm was too high and was very loud. So best cruise speed is 90-100 on autobahn

      @@TESTDRIVEFREAK Thank you for your response. You are alright. In the end, those vans were designed for hauling people with confort, not higher speeds. My father had a Mexican 1984 VW Combi (T2 as Mexico never imported or manufactured the T3 Vanagon) with the 1600 and it topped at 105-110 kph, while it was recommended to travel at 80-90 kph for longer engine longevity.

    Just bought a '71 T2. I had a '66 21 window back in the 70's. Question, the lever in the center front wall in front of the
    emer. brake, which position opens the front flaps ? Also the blue air levers, down for open ? Tks in advance.
