Everyone’s situation is different so Money will be NOT be the MOST important! I am a Local CDL Driver and I will give my opinion on how to select the best trucking job! Sacrificing pay for home time is a good pay out to me. I’m 23 getting to go home and live my life after working. I love it. Great career, this young, I’ve surpassed friends even though I could go beyond and travel OTR for much more. Love the industry

Diesel delivery driver in Massachusetts/Connecticut area. Hourly. $21 - $35 an hour. Only need a class B and be able to drive a 10 speed dual axle. They do have autos also. Time and a half, double time Sundays if you choose to work. Delivery to construction sites, and work is demanding fueling construction equipment. Pros are that if you're younger it keeps you in shape and is far healthier than sitting in a semi 11 hours a day. We make far more than almost any Class A freight hauler and are home every day at 3pm. Thank for the video Mr. Gene!
$21-$35 has a little bit of range. Would you say that it's mainly the folks who have already been there for years who are making closer to $35? Or is it one of those things where some companies pay more than others?

I upgraded my Class B to a Class A in April 2022. I jumped from a few companies during that time & the company I stuck with & don’t plan on leaving is Fedex Freight.
I got in at a good time when they were offering top pay for new drivers that either had their CLP & went through their Driver development program, had their class A but no experience but went through their DD program or had 1 year of experience. That top pay window has passed so now you will start with entry level pay and get top pay after 2-3 years
Top pay is 35$ (get raise each year)
Starting pay is 29-30$
It’s a great company the managers give a fuck, dispatchers know what they’re doing and they try their best to make everyone happy
Here are a few local companies that pay relatively the same, most of these guys require 1yr of experience some would let you slide if you go through their DD programs
R&L carriers
Requirements: all 3 endorsements. 1 year experience
Estes freight
Requirements: same as above or go through their DD program
Old dominion
Requirements: same as above or go through their DD program if you have your CLP or no experience
YRC freight (they don’t pay the same)
Requirements: same as above or go through their DD program if you have your CLP or no experience
Penske trucking
Requirements: 1yr experience
Marten transport
Requirements: 4 months experience
HMD trucking
Requirements: 6 months experience
XPO logistics
Requirements: 1 year experience, all 3 endorsements or go through their DD program, if you have your CLP or No experience. Warning: these mfs will work you 14hrs a day
ABF freight
Requirements: same as above or go through their DD program if you have your CLP or no experience
Schneider
Requirements: it’s Schneider bruh they’ll hire a rock off the ground even if that’s it’s first day being a rock
Pilot
Requirements: 1 year experience, need tanker and Hazmat, supposedly their drivers make 85k minimum to over 100k a year SUPPOSEDLY
These are a few that cross my mind, did research on or tried working for.
Warning on the companies that offer DD programs aka pay for your CDL, you will have to work for them for a certain amount of time (1 year) to keep your CDL so basically if you quit or get fired before that year they can take away your CDL or you have to pay them the money back that they put into training you. A guy did this at FedEx (he no called no show purposely) and they reported it to the IRS and now he won’t see another refund check until the full 13k is paid. Basically read the contracts people

Another option to think about with no experience is local beer/liquor delivery drivers, it's one of the more physically demanding careers but most start you in the mid $20's
How many days you work a week?
I was a single mom and looking into getting my CDL because I love driving and trying to find a job that pays enough where I live has been hard. I absolutely love traveling, but because of my kids I'd feel guilty leaving them too long if I went OTR, so I'm glad to have seen this information.
You can start off with FedEx, UPS, XPO logistics, Schneider or CR England. They have local driving positions and they'll train you and help you get your CDL.
Where you located? I in trucking hub of the NE and after CDL school it was nonstop recruiters. Get into a Teamster union for local, but they ain't gonna train you. If you want one that trains you, you gonna gonna go OTR if not in a hotspot for carriers.
@Jim Douglas I'm in Dallas, Texas. I got my CDL through FedEx Express and I've never been over the road, I've never even slept in a truck. Although the only long hauling I did was within a 250 mile radius and I was still home everyday. Yeah most companies that train their new drivers start them off as OTR but there are some companies that can start you off local and help you get your CDL.

I got sent to a community college that offered CDL training here(HACC in PA), you might want to look into what your state has to offer. I went through PA careerlink to get my training for free in 2017. At least that way you not stuck to one company, because believe me the recruiters will tell you what you want to hear vs real life driving for some of these carriers. At least that gives you freedom to shop around a bit, and most good schools are flooded with offers. I had over 20 offers when graduated. Being a single mom I sure you would qualify for what your state offers

Yes I can agree I been a CDL holder since 2019 and literally they all want 1-2yr experience otr. I drove for crst & Pam they will treat you like crap and as a 26yr old I ha e 2 children. I need something local or rural where I can be home daily. I wish someone would give me a chance
I've done both local and OTR, and they both have their pros and cons. The pros of being local are that you're home every day and get to eat home cooked meals, can shower without paying for it, not having to find a place to park, and sleeping in a warm bed. But the cons are you make less money, you're under constant and close supervision by the fleet managers, you have to commute back and forth to work every day, and it gets tedious going to the same places and seeing the same scenery day after day.
Plus, you don't have a lot of time to yourself. You're still working 12 to 14 hour days and have to get enough sleep to do it all over again every day, and some places don't give you weekends off. You work until your 70 runs out, but they expect you back the second your 34-hour reset is done
I agree with a lot of this. There are some private carriers out there who are local that run you about 40-50 hours
@@_GR2xactly. I'm local, I start at 5:30 am and am done between 2:30 and 3:30 everyday. There's a longer day here and there but I rarely work that 12 hour day. Never 14. 14 hours is insane. All drop and hooks and live unloads. No manual labor.
I must add that most local companies work you like a slave. I lucked up. I did local, hourly LTL before, that wasn't bad. Some LTL companies work long days and some don't.

I work a food service job and the hard part is getting used to different start times and it’s even worse when you have to come back on your 10hr reset
I want the physically demanding work and being local sounds way better, I don’t want to rot in a truck doing otr. I hope I can get some food delivery job starting out

By load is the best way to go. 2 loads in 10-12 hours 300-500 easy. If I have to wait for the load after 2 hours it’s standard to get $25-30 an hour!

Folks I know I'm just some comment that you're reading but "by the hour is always best" because there will always be delays and/or whateva have you....by the hour you're getting paid for your time I'm just telling you through experience. There are instances we're getting paid by the load is good (only if its consistent!) but there will always be some kind of delay and you're not making money until you complete the load. So by the hour is always best. Trust Me on that.

I got my CDL over a year ago and have been working for Coca Cola for over a year to get experience plus they were the only company willing to hire me right after graduation for home daily jobs. It’s brutal and definitely a soul crushing job. Hoping to find a better paying home daily job soon.
Dude me too. I’ve only been here for 4 months and it is indeed crushing my soul. Just remember it’s a delivery job more than a trucking job. We’re gonna make it out. Keep your head up man

After being paid per mile, per load and per hour, I really think hourly pay compensated me the most for my time
These companies like to waste you time while they get out the door after 8 hrs and we out here 12 to 14hrs but paid like we out here 8. Makes no sense.

Most truckers have no time for the gym. I do foodservice and pretty much get paid to workout, home daily , great benefits and the checks are above $1300 a week net

I’m really torn between going with Prime Tanker, Weekly run paid per mile or XPO doing nights paid hourly but I’m home at the end of every shift. The pay is roughly the same…
Prime Tanker mean minimal-no touch. While dealing w hauling liquid as a new driver.
XPO is known to demand the drivers load/unload.
I’m single for now but want to get married sooner than later. I feel like in both cases I’m going to end up waiting another year till I have more normal hours.

60 to 65K a year without killing myself is all I need to be home daily and work an average of 10hrs.. I am good with that. trying to make 80 or 90 to be killing myself is not worth it in my opinion. Health is wealth. there is no trade off for that.
I'm a single mom but I started when he was older. But alot of jobs do want 6 mo otr experience to go local. I've been driving now for 3 yrs. And please get endorsements it helps.

I was otr for a while and when I went local I started making more money. Maybe I didn’t give otr a fair chance. But I recommend J.B. hunt intermodal for local
OTR is a myth if you’re a company (or lease) driver. You know why? It’s mathematically impossible to get enough miles to make good money if you’re paid by the mile.
You only have 11 hours to drive. If the truck is going 65mph, the MOST you can ever do is 650 miles a day or about 3000 miles a week. Now take into account time spent getting loaded/unloaded, chasing trailers, fueling, finding parking, blah blah blah, and on your best week you’ll MAYBE do 2500 miles. If you’re paid 30-60 cents a mile, that’s literally $750-1500 a week before tax.
You can work local/regional and make that easily. The difference is that you may end up doing more touch freight.

That’s crazy. They need to start paying a $1 per mile. Then it would be worth it for these men to take a job like that. Well even still it’s not really worth it. But more young men would take it to get well off wary in life.

i disagree with the labor intensive part. i like moving and lifting and im used to hard labor. i’ll bet my last dollar that truck labor isnt nearly as hard as people make it out to be. the only thing that would turn me off is the lower pay
As a local driver we have to do manual labor majority of the time no matter how you cut it. Some companies go overboard and the pay doesn’t warrant the level of labor

I’ve been seeing the shorter Amazon Prime trucks I’m guessing that’s a local driver job . No I’m not talking about the box trucks or vans used by the contractors , Amazon Prime ones . I plan on getting my cdl b , not interested in A wondering are those for on cdl b holders .

As a local driver just prepare for bullshit to be tossed your way for a long time. They'll say anything to get you in the door and then fuck you over day 1.

I've thought of doing trucking bc I hate being broke but really curious If it's worth it. Like I'm procrastinating like crazy about it bc the thought of driving a semi worries me a lot and also curious if the pay is really worth it. I'm considering getting a class b instead of a bc Ik I'd hate being gone all day everyday and I'm assuming with class b I'd be gone for like half the day or something like that.
Trucking can definitely be worth it especially if you are looking to change your financial situation without needing any extensive schooling. Starting out over the road you will be gone for a little while but there are local positions to have you home every night for class A or B drivers.

I don't see how any driving job could be considered physically strenuous. Even if you have to load the truck or strap things down and do a little bit of physical work blah blah blah.
Coming from someone who's been welding for 18 years, standing on my feet for a mandatory 12 hours a day in an un air conditioned factory while wearing my welding gear for 60 hours a week.
I would like to spend just 50% of the time sitting on my butt in an air conditioning truck.

I’m not sure what a new cdl b driver makes in the Philly suburbs area for a small company roughly around 35 trucks. I’m hearing they pay about $230 a day. M-F. I’ve looked online to see but nothing is really accurate. I was going to ask a friend that works there, but I don’t get into his personal business. Can somebody tell me what I’d be looking at hourly with a CDL B LICENSE? Thanks guys.
I’m not too sure about Philly but down here in Texas, I’ve seen that they average about 19-20 an hr but I know up north, trucking pays more

How early do local truck drivers start work and how many hours do they work?
How many hours you work will depend on the company. I worked at company where I worked for only 8-10 hours and another where 14 hours a day was almost expected. Generally speaking most local jobs start early from 12am-5am

I'm ok with all that you said working otr, it's more or less risk, man DOT , 4 wheelers, equipment, these otr just doesn't make what its worth

If you get your CDL Class B you can drive smaller trucks (box trucks, dump trucks, etc.)

You might have to go to a company that is more flexible with the driving history, possibly as an independent contractor
I have one from over five years ago. It kept me from getting hired as an Amazon residential delivery driver last year. I have a CDL-A now and most companies don't want anything to do with me as a recent grad. think you'd want a good 7 to 10 years of clean driving record to get a better chance to start in this industry. There are lots of companies that have lower stamdards, but you might want to give it another two years, for a total of three years and see where that takes you.

I'm not gonna lie I don't wanna do otr but if I'm buying a house within a year I think that's a good way to go. U live in the sleeper / motel (on the companies dime and stack your money while having very minimal living expense. Other than that ill pass on the otr.
I fully agree. If you have zero overhead and don’t have rent or other utilities, you can definitely stack some money up.

There are a few local companies that will hire you with no experience, mainly food service companies
