  • Materials for prop builds don't always have to come from the hardware store - they can also come from the coffee aisle. In this video, I'll show you how I made a Victorian-style oil lamp using a recycled bottle and parts around the house.

    It's always amazing to make something out nothing. That's why I love 3D printing so much! I'm pringting a 3D steampunk lamp right now. I think there's 93 pieces. Can't wait!
    Great work and imagination, as always!

    Reminds me of some gaslight sconces I built for a charity haunt back in the early 2000s. Used water bottles for those. Did the hot glue in silicone molds for the fancy lamp parts.

    I would love to see how you research some of these things. Finding references and thinking through how to make them from what you have.

      Google image search is my friend. I just start with a base term and as I see things that look more like what I'm after I'll modify the terms to try and broaden the results until I feel like I have sufficient source material to complete the build.

    Hey Derek, great job (as usual)! I have a top tip that might help: when spraying glass to add frost or soot, it works a little better to shoot the inside of the glass, that way the glass keeps it's shine on the outside. In this example, if you shot the white from the bottom to the top through the tube and the black from the top to the bottom, works really well.

    @6:32 I would recommend using an air brush to put the black "soot" on the inside of the upper rim of the "glass."

    I made a bunch of hanging 'swamp lanterns' awhile back, but the little battery candles weren't really bright enough to shine through the surface treatment, and because they were glass, I couldn't perforate them for electric. Still have them somewhere but don't use them.

      @@hardiehardley that's a real project, though. I think if I do decide to try and use them again, I'll just build some higher power LED units to drop in, instead of trying to rely on cheap craft store tealights.

      I would start by figuring out a theme, then start making a list of props that would fit that theme and get to making them. Start with the easier ones to help build his confidence with tools, etc.

    I watch this channel regularly and normally I love it but the use of the cutter to make the special detail really made this project unaccessible for me. Yes, you can cut it by hand but that would take a very very long time and would leave irregularities that would make the piece look hand made, most likely even from a distance. The tone of the video was diy but the average person does not have speciality tools like that. Please strive to make these type of items more accessible. You seem like the kind of person to take constructive criticism well. I still enjoy watching the process.

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  Před měsícem

      I hear you and appreciate the feedback. Something I forgot to mention in the video that may make this more accessible is that these antique style lamps come in a variety of designs. Some of which are much less busy, which makes them ideal for hand cutting. As for irregularities, I find foam to be pretty forgiving when cut with a sharp blade. Thanks for taking the time to comment and thanks for watching.
