Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
Well, I was feeling sad and feeling blue
I didn’t know what in the world I wus gonna do
Them Communists they was coming around
They was in the air
They was on the ground
They wouldn’t give me no peace
[Verse 2]
So I run down most hurriedly
And joined up with the John Birch Society
I got me a secret membership card
And started off a-walking down the road
Yee-hoo, I’m a real John Bircher now!
Look out you Commies!
[Verse 3]
Now we all agree with Hitler’s views
Although he killed six million Jews
It don’t matter too much that he was a Fascist
At least you can’t say he was a Communist!
That’s to say like if you got a cold you take a shot of malaria
[Verse 4]
Well, I woos looking everywhere for them gol-darned Reds
I got up in the morning and looked under my bed
Looked in the sink, behind the door
Looked in the glove compartment of my car
Couldn’t find them
[Verse 5]
I woos looking high and low for them Reds everywhere
I woos looking in the sink and underneath the chair
I looked way up my chimney hole
I even looked deep down inside my toilet bowl
They got away
[Verse 6]
Well, I woos sitting home alone and started to sweat
Figured they woos in my T.V. set
Peeked behind the picture frame
Got a shock from my feet, hitting right up in the brain
Them Reds caused it!
I know they did them hard-core ones
[Verse 7]
Well, I quit my job so I could work all alone
Then I changed my name to Sherlock Holmes
Followed some clues from my detective bag
And discovered they woos red stripes on the American flag!
That old Betsy Ross
[Verse 8]
Well, I investigated all the books in the library
Ninety percent of them gotta be burned away
I investigated all the people that I know
Ninety-eight percent of them gotta go
The other two percent are fellow Birchers just like me
[Verse 9]
Now Eisenhower, he’s a Russian spy
Lincoln, Jefferson and that Roosevelt guy
To my knowledge there’s just one man
That’s really a true American: George Lincoln Rockwell
I know for a fact he hates Commies because he picketed the movie Exodus
[Verse 10]
Well, I finally started thinking straight
When I run out of things to investigate
Couldn’t imagine doing anything else
So now I’m sitting home investigating myself!
Hope I don’t find out anything hmm, great God!

These lyrics of this song have relevance, even today. Cheers!
They’re back and they wear red hats…red, ironically
@@zackamania6534 Fittingly, not ironically!
Too bad the Democrats have taken up this torch. Anything that questions the establishment, blame Russia ("Commies")🤦
Love you Bob, been a fan forever!!!!!!!!!!!!❤❤❤❤
@ZACKAMANIA Trump was raised in the John birch society.
I love this harmonica...
Hilarious 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Bob has a way with a catchy Tune and a querious Verse.
We have found the enemy, and he is us!
This is the song Bob was banned from singing on the Ed Sullivan show!
Yes, the fact is remembered in the novel Libra by Don Delillo!
was ed a bircher? or afraid of them?
@@scottmcshannon6821
I read it was the network censors
Back in that time musicals, actors, and every person of influence was questioned, black listed and spied upon by our own government to root out any communists. It was a dark part of our history. As usual, glossed over by our government narrations of the facts. He makes fun of this fact that their were no communists subverting our youth. Love it.
It’s a pretty dumb song
I looked down in my toilet bowl, it was DONOVAN
they got away
Senator Mccarthy wouldnt like that one I guess. Dylan was great since then.
Yes it does have relevance today
Timely.
Best version
This is a mild version of this song. I will keep looking.

Today they're called MAGAts.

Marjorie Taylor Greene approves of the lyrics in this song- especially the ones about the television set!
"It don't matter too much that Hitler was a Fascist
At least you can't say he was a Communist!" 😃
We also can't say he brutally ended 6million.
@@user-lr8ow2jg4e You miss/ignore the point. Spreading single-minded obsession over any extreme destroys humanity. Fear of Communism was way overhyped at the time Dylan wrote this song.
The wars of ideology then there is the sermon on the mount
John Birch didn't start the society named after him
Dylan couldnt find himself?
Someone flushed their cigarette butts it seems

The JBS is no longer against commies but the US Constitution!
JBS is against both Communists and our Constitution
Where did you read that? 😏
he just made it up on the spot to be dramatic.@@whathahk
No, he's right. Against Article V, which is smack dab in the US Constitution itself.
I could have been a member of the John Birch society like my Grandfather was or a Dsughter of the American Revolution because me people were here on my Mother's Father's side since the American Revolution but no thanks I'll take my Dad's side. Potato Famine refugees in the early 1900's. Don't get me wrong there is plenty of racism and bigotry going on there as well but it's a little easier to understand. We all have preconceived notions. It's our job to overcome them especially as white people. Peace.

The jokes on him, the JBS is very much alive and relevant. Can't say the same for Mr Zimmerman.
In about 1970 I was visiting my in-laws and my BIL came home from high school. He and his friends had stopped at the JBS shop on their way home and brought some of their literature with him. We laughed so much we could hardly breathe! The only bit I remember was the statement that the Beatles song "Strawberry Fields Forever" was an incitement to smoke marijuana because trawberry plants looked exactly like marijuana. To me that says everyting you need to know about those fools. It's a short distance from there to the 2020 election.
"Mr. Zimmerman", as you call him, will be relevant as a poet, lyricist, and relevant artist as long a humans treasure art.
@@jjhpor Amen.
Are you for real? Bob Dylan is probably the biggest star in the history of rock music, and his influence and legacy, both in music and in wider society, will last forever.
@@joekavanagh7171 The influence and legacy of the John Birch Society will live on long after Mr. Dylan has passed. By the way I have seen Dylan many times, I wouldn't consider him rock though. And I never said I didn't care for his music (his voice really has gotten worse over the years to the point I really can't understand his lyrics).
Bob Dylan is one of the the most influential musicians in rock and roll history. The John Birch society is opposed the civil rights movement of the 60’s and even birth control. They can slow progress but we are never going back to where they want us.
love how the premise for this song has changed from nationalism to wokeism over the years. - "hope i dont find out to much" (racist/bigot/whatever-phobe etc etc......)
The premise hasn't changed you're just incredibly susceptible to right wing propaganda and would have been a McCarthyist 60 years ago.
