The label comment was so true. It’s so easy to just label someone as a KH2 elitist or KH3 defender. I’ve been guilty of this and I think it’s really easy to just generalize people into these categories.
I think the change comes from respecting other’s opinions and realizing that other people can have opinions opposing yours. This doesn’t invalidate your own opinion. Though I’m sure most of the people who are here probably agree and I’m just preaching to the choir.
Anyways good job man! This was very well said!

If people can't unite and overcome trivialities or differences in opinion over video games it tarnishes the experience for those who aren't as heavily invested. Fanbases can ruin great things because of this, and it ultimately breeds a toxicity in the community that alienates others.
For a franchise with themes about the power of friends and those who are connected to you, it's a sad dark irony.

Edit: the Disney worlds also felt like they were the most irrelevant to the plot in the entire series, we just kinda ran around, a villain pulled up, talked shit, and left.🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️

I played KH3 the day it came out, I was super excited for it the moment it was announced and followed it along every step of the way. The first day was so surreal and amazing, like nothing else I ever experienced. Reaching Twilght Town did put a bit of a damper on it when I saw how much of it was cut, but then going to Toy Box got me back into that blissful state. From there I kind of wavered back and forth while playing, the final segments of the game with Aqua, Roxas and all of that made me so happy, but unfortunately by the end of it I did end up feeling a bit disappointed. I still went on to 100% and Platinum the game despite that though and I enjoyed almost all of it. But I've yet to go back to the game since then, not sure if my opinion on any of it would change. I do intend to play it on Critical some point soon before the DLC is out though, but I just didn't have that drive to hop in when it first got added.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, I loved the game, but I can tell it was flawed. I personally want to see the game get as many improvements as possible with the DLC or patches, but I'm not holding my breath either. That being said, I don't see the logic in either side, either attacking someone for criticizing it (because it does have it's problems) or for enjoying it how it is (since I did still love my time with it). I kind of just wish everyone else could use that same logic and not feel the need to take one side or the other.

I feel like, in a certain sense, KH3 was fated to be received negatively from the start. And I don't just mean because of fans overhyping it, although that certainly played a big role in the level of disappointment as far as I can see. But the problems run deeper, and really, most of us should have seen them coming as far back as Dream Drop Distance.
The story was not set up with any new ideas or mystery in mind like KH1 and 2 were. KH1 was a totally fresh game, and KH2 only had Chain of Memories as a lead-in, which itself was so chock full of mysteries that you still couldn't really figure out what you were going to be in for with KH2's story. We didn't know what the story would be, we didn't predict Roxas, we didn't know the Organization's goals, we really didn't know anything, and I think that mystique helped the overall experience when it first released.
But KH3 had a whopping 9 games of build-up (KH2, Days, BBS, Coded, DDD, 0.2, X, Union X, and Back Cover). And ever since Coded's secret ending, we knew who the main antagonist of 3 was going to be, and after DDD, we knew exactly what the primary conflict and the makeup of that conflict (the seven lights vs. thirteen darknesses) was going to be as well. Ever since DDD, we've had 0.2 and all the X games as further build-up, either not providing any new information or otherwise feeding us even more details that served to leave little room for ambiguity. So, going into KH3, we already knew what the objective was, who all the villains were (thank you, grossly over-marketing trailers that spoiled all the worlds and villains), and what the overarching plot was going to be. There was nothing left to leave to our imagination.
Besides that, the premise itself was really one-dimensional, which never left a lot of room for creative turns and excursions. With KH2 and 1, there were a bunch of pieces in play, with the Disney villains playing a significant role in the first game and Maleficent and Pete playing a really fascinating role in the second, along with Riku's turn to darkness, Axel's quest to reclaim his friend, Roxas' struggle for identity with Sora, and just a crapload of other subplots that all lent themselves really well to fleshing out the narrative. But KH3 was so single-minded and so linear that it felt hollow. Not to mention the fact that yes, the power of waking as a driving plot device was a total sham. Now, I personally think they could have just run with the excuse that Sora needed to spend the first 80% building his strength back up, and at least that leaves us with a better reason for the Disney worlds than just trying to get the power of waking which it turned out was inside him all along, but if I'm being honest, I don't think that would have really saved the story. Yes, there were other concurrent plot threads going on like Riku and Mickey trying to save Aqua and Ienzo trying to reconstruct Roxas, etc., but all of those plot threads only served either as less interesting limbs of the main conflict, or otherwise as foreshadowing for the series' future. Now, to be fair, for all of that, I still thought the final 20% of this game (minus Kairi) was just fantastic. Certainly flawed in places, but overall, it provided me with the emotional catharsis and the sense of closure and resolution that I've wanted from this series ever since I was in grade school. And even though I know that to most, that isn't enough, for me, that makes the entire game worth it.
But yeah, the game was tainted from the start. It was tainted by far too many games of build-up, and it was tainted by Nomura's noticeably more plot-driven narrative style as opposed to the character-driven style he had early on. Now, personally, even though I think this game was ruined by its massive amount of baggage and overall poor storytelling, I did still enjoy it, and I'll anxiously await the DLC when it comes out. And as for the future of the series, I think I actually have more hope than most.
I was ALWAYS skeptical about KH3. Ever since DDD, ever since I got a glimpse of exactly what the conflict was going to be and what the story was going to be about, I KNEW it wasn't going to be as good as the first two were. Of course, like most, I was still excited, and I loved getting the chance to play it, but I think I managed to love the game more because I had fewer illusions going into it than most of the fanbase did. There was no way, in my mind, that this game would turn out to be as magical as KH2 or 1 because the setup for it was overblown and overly forecast. But now, they have something of a clean slate to work with.
Even though personally I hate the idea of the Foretellers as the new villains going forward (they're boring, inept, stupid-looking, and they have no definable goals), I am excited to jump into the unknown for the first time since the end of KH2. Now, this is hoping, of course, that the ongoing developments in Union X (fuck that game) don't spoil too much of what's to come. And they might, knowing Nomura. But if they don't, then I eagerly look forward to the series FINALLY moving forward into unexplored territory, and I'm thirsty again for a KH game where I DON'T know what's going to happen, and where I can just ride the crazy train to a new destination.

Going to have to somewhat agree with you on the lack of mystery part. The trailers spoiling pretty much everything didn't help. The reason why I still have kh1 as my favorite game in the series is because of how well they executed that sense of mystery which was the original tagline of the first game "Kingdom Hearts you never know who you'll run into next."
Right down to not knowing which world you were going to go into or who you were fighting such as running into Squall while wondering who this Leon character Donald and Goofy we're supposed to find, seeing Cloud walking into the collisium, Sephiroth being the mystery platinum match opponent, and even Chernabog appearing at the End of The World. It's that sense of not knowing who you were going to run into that none of the other games have been able to capture compared to the first game.

Honestly as someone who really enjoyed KH3 to the point where I played all the HD collections before it's release so I could enjoy what it had to offer even more, it sucks that all this turmoil and discord has to happen due to it.
Sometimes it's hard to read between the lines of serious criticism or just bashing cuz it's KH due to how negative it was being portrayed by those who know nothing about KH, or those that don't give KH3 the time of day because it isn't like KH2FM.

It's because they Had more than enough time to create a surreal story telling experience to atleast be on par or maybe on the same level as Kingdom hearts 2. They however created a rushed game that failed to incorporate what made Kingdom Hearts what it used to be. Come on guys, they didn't include Final Fantasy characters! One of the biggest things that made the series, Sora and friends wouldn't of made it far at all without them. And don't give me that crap the series/story can stand on its own. They also as well decided to not include The collisuem, iconic keyblades and other iconic world's. After the creation of KH2( which is also argued to be one of the greatest Ps2 games of all time), it's easy to be almost utterly sick after this third installment. It had its pros of course, but it took them literally this long to create a shorter and also very underwhelming story. There were so many things that weren't wrapped up that we were looking forward too. Examples Clouds story, Leon/squall and the FF characters that saved you in the first installment. Beast and Bella, Ariel. And no one is also mentioning the incredibly disappointing Ending sequence, if you are a true fan you would know that Kh2's ending sequence and bosses absolutely crushed Kh3's rushed mess( fighting with Riku as a pair/Mickey, etc.). All in all, I understand what's being stated and the wrong doings of people in the community. But this was more than a just a game a lot of people including myself. It was a masterpiece that deserved time and thought put into third installment. And I just don't see that. Everything needed to be wrapped up and prepared for the future. In the end the future was prepared but I was left utterly and shamefully disappointed that this is what this franchise turned into after waiting for so long. I started playing the games when I was just a kid, about 10 or younger in fact. Now I'm 21 about to go on 22 and I can for sure say I won't forget the memories this franchise gave me. Even if they hypothetically didn't fully work on it longer than 5 years (Which isn't true since they had AT LEAST 6 years to get their shit together) that's more than enough time to bring us a game that actually feels polished. What was the point of the handheld games if they weren't ever going to even capitalize on the story of those handheld games in KH3? And not including Final Fantasy characters was one of the biggest crimes imaginable. Even worse is it was probably because Nomura was throwing a hissy fit about FFXV. Case in point, Final Fantasy. The state that the franchise is now thanks to fans. They listened to the criticism, changed the game to what the fans want and it backfired on them really hard. That's the course over 5-6 games starting with FFX.

It's quite a damn shame that KH3 ended up splitting the fanbase this badly. While I I do find KH2 to be the better game critically, I still like KH3 a lot when it comes to presentation and gameplay design. Hopefully the DLC will change my perspective of the game and get a much better experience. There isn't anything wrong pointing out the flaws of a new installment of a series and still have a great time with it regardless even if it's not your favorite.

Tyler Adase To me, it seemed sora was way more mature in kh2 with his emotions for certain events vs kh3 always optimistic and forced sadness sora for those moments he had. The focus on Disney worlds with a little bit of kingdom hearts sprinkled over them sucked the life out of me as well since I was so excited to get into this story after all this time like everyone else has waited. Kh3 has its story moments, it’s presentation of gameplay but I feel it drastically needs it’s roots in place of where it came from in the first place.

I think the problem is... there are fans who don't want to see the problems the franchise has. They think everything is fantastic and if you dare to say something negative about it, they will go for your neck like an angry dog and won't let you go.
Anyways... I don't have a problem with the gameplay experiments Osaka team has done over the years. I enjoyed the gameplay of all their games actually. My problem is... the story. And how it has been handled by Nomura since Birth by Sleep. The problem with Kingdom Hearts is that it has too many games that introduce too many plot points. If you only had KH, CoM, KH II and 358/Days, the story would be much more solid, and it would have allowed for a far better conclusion at KH III (obviously, it would be a very different KH III from the one we know). But by creating BbS, DDD, Union X and 0.2 and all of their new characters and plot twists that tie directly with the main plot... you just have too much shit going on! That's why KH III story and pacing is a mess: they needed to cover too much shit and end it all in one game. That cannot go well at all... specially if you want to resurrect everyone and make each and every one of the dozens of characters in the franchise have their own moments.
If they wanted to do spin offs, I'm fine with that. But do them as... well, actual spin offs. Side storys that don't have a major impact on the main KH plot and that are self contained in their own game. 358/2 Days is perfect at this, because it is a great story on its own and provides interisting details about some KH characters... but at the same time, it's not mandatory to understand the overall KH story nor affects it in a significant way.
At least... that's what I think.

As someone who played all the games but didn't grow up with them, as someone who aspires to be a writer and understands what makes a story good I feel like kh3 has the best story and writing. And I personally enjoyed the combat. It was fast, responsive, and pretty to look at. Sure it was easy but it got really hard at the end at the aqua mission. Also not to mention that the organization 13 members show up way more and do a lot more in the worlds, or how all the interludes each ads something significant to story when other games didn't do that. I don't "hate" KH3, but I do think it's severely lacking compared to the rest of the series despite the major changes in quality. Both from my personal standpoint as well as the anecdotal pattern I've noticed, that's what's really disappointing most of the vets who aren't happy with the installment. Sure, you can try to apologize with arguments about engine changes and story closure, but that still doesn't make the game feel less hollowed, especially when just about all the stuff that was missing from KH3 was just about everything that I liked most about the series such as the Square cameos, Arena, and Radiant Garden. Even some of the more important aspects of the lore mechanics itself was neglected. The fact that things like Oathkeeper, the staple Keyblade that represents Sora's connection to Kairi, has to be DLC'd-in is something I'm still trying to fathom.
Like I say, I don't hate KH3, I enjoyed my playthrough, 100% everything the game had to offer, and cried like a baby at the end like everyone else did, but like even Dean here agrees, that doesn't the game above valid criticism.

If the fact that as an obsessive person who loved the game I have to break away from KH conversation to not feel stressed, there's a problem.
(Side note: A lot of the people who go after KH3 fans and speak negative things to them are people who hated the story. I find the people unhappy with the direction the story took a lot more toxic than the gameplay ones. As someone that's been a fan of the franchise since I was introduced to it by my mom's roommate when I was, like, four (about a year or two after KH1 was released), I admit, I had some of those kinds of expectations and immediate disappointments myself, but when I took a step back and looked at it objectively, I loved it just as much as the other games in the series. I don't think it was the content (or lack thereof) that made people hate KH3, it was the amount of time they had to wait for it all.

Where is oathkeeper & oblivion? Why was Scala not even a world? What about radiant garden? Final fantasy? Why is dark inferno so bland?” All things we could see being fixed with the dlc and while KH2fm added a whole ton of stuff, I don’t think anybody beat the game back in the day and thought that they needed more synthesis stuff, another drive form, or more keyblades but maybe that’s just my stance on it, I wasn’t around back then, I know people thought the game was piss easy and some hated reaction commands and critical essentially fixed both of those core issues for a lot of people.

I think one of the problem is that we don't have new content to get hyped over. Another is that it can be hard to appreciate something that isn't fully understood. This is why I'm making my content. While there isn't new content, we can look back at the old stuff under a new light. Many have this notion that we pretty much got everything figured out, but there is so much left to discover just from the past. If you don't believe me just look at some quotes.
In reference to working on advent children
"Nomura felt that Advent Children differed from Hollywood films where the meaning of most scenes tends to be explained. With Advent Children, however, the staff wanted viewers to be able to interpret scenes themselves, allowing them to come to different conclusions."
in reference to a director's secret report.
"Also, there are many new developments. I think that the news will be able to satisfy the widely supportive KH fans everywhere. Because there is still more to say about this "new" thing, please dare to think with a different flow, rather than just going with what's mainstream. I will give you a hint about the contents of one of the numerous developments. In the freshly added secret movie a phrase comes out, "Fate doesn't happen by accident, there is necessity".
In the near future, when you experience the new Kingdom Hearts, please see about opening this book. I think surely some of these points will tie together. And also at that time, it would be very fortunate if all the fans everywhere have a good time with it. Until an announcement comes, please have your fill of fun with this game and look forward to the next."
So while yes we should be looking forward to new stuff, we should also look to connect the dots of the past. A problem I have seen within the community is that conclusions are drawn as Nomura wants. However people tend to treat the conclusion drawn that is the most popular as fact. We are supposed to draw different conclusions. I have analysis and theories, but I'm always asking what the viewer thinks. Feel free to disagree, because so much growth can come from disagree. Maybe someone changes there minds, and maybe new theories sprout from the discussion. However just because you disagree doesn't mean you should shame or think negatively of a person. I highly recommend you check out my videos if you want some new KH content that may give a new understanding of the series and what it has to offer.
I have two types of videos.
1 Deep Dive an extremely well though out video essay, I present hypothesis and potential scenarios and have a mountain of evidence to support. Most importantly I draw parallels to the real world to show that there is so many positive lesson that can be taken away from the stories we love so much.
2 Food 4 Thot, like deep dive but much shorter. The main topic is usually covered in the first 1-2 mins and is purely theorizing(speculating). While it may be quicker it also means I have less time to explain myself thus it requires you do more thinking on your end to understand my perspective.

I just let it go after 3 cuz i felt like the story was on a decline for a long time and Nomura proved multiple times he's not the genius people make him out to be. Never knew that the fanbase was so 'divided'. I really really really can't be arsed with this series anymore

I think EVERYBODY needs to stay in their own lanes. I'm a fan of the game like everyone else but I will never be ashamed to be apart of any community that I'm involved in because I already know my opinion of the game. On top of that, I know who I am as a person which is all that you need to know in order to live life to the fullest. If everyone would just mind their business, then there would be peace but that won't happen until everyone finds that peace within themselves.

imo I think it's the replayability, KH2 was almost perfectly balanced hence why people always go back to it, we love how the OG KH developer team handled the games back then, they created a balanced system that received critical acclaim that still holds up to this day, KH3 lacks that shine, again my opinion

  • @ItsCassius
    @ItsCassius Před 5 lety +6

I think the two biggest issues that none is mentioning are twofold:
    1) The series itself becomes less and less accessible to newcomers and/or casual fans with each passing Union X update and entire game. This means that the fanbase remaining to even have this kind of discourse are the passionate diehards, and with few new people coming in, this split is incredibly damning.
    2) People who've taken issue with the story beats of previous games have done so under the belief 'Its Nomura thinking up stuff off the cuff again, and will be addressed in a later game.'
And yes, whilst KH3 did not mark the end of the franchise, it did mark the end, one would think, of the focus upon many characters, plot points, and concepts introduced therein. Many people expected KH3 to clean up it's concepts and lore in preparation for the next arc, but instead it seems that even THEN we have to purchase extra DLC to fill in the blanks before we can truly cast aside the bulk of our lingering questions.
Personally, I never thought the whole 'Final Mix' content was ever charming or justifiable, but at least in the previous games the 'Added' content literally ADDED to a bigger narrative. KH3 ReMind feels almost like it's needing to...'complete' the story. Fill in the blanks the original game missed. The excuse of 'foreshadowing' is lost - save for perhaps a few vague superbosses that'll be nerfed before their official debut to Sora.
Tangent aside, I was personally disappointed in KH3, and believe wholeheartedly that with each new game will the disgruntled diehards start to drop the series or remain with a pessimistic outlook on the franchise over time.
In short, I think KH3 was the tipping point for everyone. It is easier to just accept that this is the climate of the fandom now, and there's nothing the games or story can do to bring everyone back together anymore, because the feelings of a 17 year wait for the finale won't disappear.
EDIT: Before anyone mentions it, I am aware that KH3's raw sales were very good, I can't help but wonder how many people were brand new, and/or how many people did so because SE promised it'd be accommodating of people who hadn't played the other games. Spoilers: It wasn't.

Here’s my thing, I DONT CARE WHAT YALL THINK OF IT. I like KH3. The music was great! The worlds stories were mostly good. Gameplay was nice. I’ll admit i was against the keyblade changes & forms but I LOVE IT. How you feel about it is solely your feelings like myself. My only complaints were the following:
    - twilight town shouldve been more explorable & radiant garden shouldve been a world.
    - Always felt 100 acre woods shouldve been scrapped & after playing it im still 100% on that idea. It was 3 identical games no matter how you look at it.
    - Ship battles in the caribbean were annoying (but some might love it).
    - San fransokyo felt short & rushed (but it couldve been me because i was hyped to see whats next story wise & with big hero 6 being one of my favorite disney movies I wanted more).
    - The scene where sora went back in time at the keyblade graveyard made no sense (im open for explanations/friendly debates but if noruma’s explanation still makes me feel this way then im stuck in my ways)
    - They gave us too many trailers prior to the release. It spoiled too much. Way too much.
    Sidebar: I WANT THAT WALLET!!

Honestly I think the reason KH3 had such a mixed reception (although I loved the game. Id give it a 9/10) is bc since KH3 was announced, Other games like BOTW, Persona 5, God of War, Mario Odyssey, etc were announced and came out. These games were all from beloved franchises and with the exception of BOTW, stayed very true to their past iterations. Ive seen people say KH3 felt "lifeless" and "no heart" no pun intended. And as much as I love KH3, I know that its not a better game than botw or P5. And not to compare apples to oranges, but its hard for me to recommend KH3 to someone whos never played the series compared to suggesting P5 to someone whos never played Persona.
People who say "KH3 oMeGaLuL tRASH" are just wrong, and its totally ok to not have been satisfied with 3, after 6 years of waiting its safe to say we had high expectations, while mine were met and in some ways exceeded, I fully recognize that others werent. I think some people mightve had their expectations too high or just expected a style of game that isnt what KH was ever about. A guy on a podcast played the game bc he said "it looks like a fun banjo-kazooie type game" thinking it was a collect-o-thon. He then came back a couples weeks later and said the game sucked and the scenes are poorly directed and the characters are shallow. Clearly hes wrong.
But whatever comes next comes next. Im stoked for the remind dlc, and whatever comes next for the series. I dont know what I want going forward in the series (Other than a Treasure Planet world pls and thank you) but I will stick with the series.

You calling people with different opinions wrong, is wrong itself. That guy you mentioned was completely right whit what he said about the game. The game wasn't good, the scenes were poorly directed, and the characters were shallow, you just can't seem to accept that.

    • @Sunshine-eo2sp
      @Sunshine-eo2sp Před 5 lety

TheFruityKing I did not say that the people with other opinions were wrong, I said I disagree.
The guy expecting a banjo Kazooie type game from KH3 clearly didn't have the correct expectations. Kingdom hearts is in no way a collect-o-thon a la Banjo Kazooie. But KH never strives to be a collect-o-thon, it's 3d action combat. You should never criticize a game for something it doesn't strive for. Like why would you criticize Cuphead or Kirby for having shallow storys when it's not meant to have a deep storys?
I loved the game. It's your opinion the game was bad and pressing your opinion is a bit hypocritical don't you think?
Calling characters like Aqua, Axel, or Roxas shallow makes me question if you've actually played the series.

I really wish everyone would get along in the kingdom hearts community. Its bad kingdom hearts content creators are scared to upload kingdom hearts content just because of others out there who seems to have a problem with the game & then they jump on the other person for like that game just because they hate the game. Look if you hate the game fine hate the game as much as you want but don't bring someone else down to your level of hatred just because there opinion is not suited to your opinion that's not fair. Let's just get along & respect each other's opinion even if we have a disagreement just keep it to ourselves & everything will work out for all of us take care.

    Can I just say something?
WHATS UP WITH THE HYPERFOCUS ON GRAPHICS??!!
Seriously, it's like every game has to have even the tiniest little speck of dust look pretty!
I firmly believe that good graphics are ultimately subjective and should not be a focus within almost any game.
    Here's my reasons:
    1. It takes up time, energy and money which could be used to improve other things
    2. It just serves to make older generation games look sloppier for really lame reasons and sets up toxic expectations for any other game.
    3. You don't focus on graphics unless it's absolutely flawed and interferes with the game or looks god awful
    4. When you do focus on graphics, they should be for beautiful set pieces. Remember how absolutely stunning those cgi implements mixed with older software back in the PS1 days to create a surreal atmosphere? Or how pieces stood out and captured your attention by turning into full cgi cutscenes, which were a godsend back then? Asuras wrath is an exception to this because it perfectly captures the theme and STILL buffers out the story with hand drawn segments!
    5. Games should use graphics as a means of expression and gameplay, NOT an expensive copout to do a shoddier job.
