  • Here is the running of the 135th Kentucky Derby on May 2, 2009, at Churchill Downs, Louisville, Kentucky. Mine That Bird, a 50-1 longshot with Calvin Borel aboard, pulled off the second biggest upset in Derby history. (Incidentally, we didn't take the content from the official site; we took it directly off the television and were just about the first on CZcams to post it. )

Pioneer of the Nile is best known today as the sire of 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.

He was dead last for about half the race. The announcer was so focused on the favorites in the homestretch run he completely missed Mine That Bird streaking up on the inside.

Haha! He didn't even notice Mine That Bird until that horse had already torched the whole field!

I have worked with race horses for 60 years (I am 67). They know they are racing, though they may not know the difference between a big race and a small race. Some of them love to race, and others could care less, it is just what they have been trained to do.

i actually think the announcer's blunder is what will make this a classic video clip...it's like, even the expert had no idea who that horse was, let alone how he made that charge

Mine That Bird was Canada's (Two Year Old) Horse of the Year last year. He has a double dose of Northern Dancer blood, who is in the Hall of Fame in Canada as a Kentucky Derby winner and the most important stallion of the 20th century.
The announcer really bombed in this race, run to the wire.

Northern Dancer, a Canadian horse, and the most pre-potent stallion of the 20th century, is in Mine That Bird's pedigree, twice. Since Northern Dancer produced an unusual number of offspring that were spectacular racehorses, and that passed tremendous speed and "heart" on to their progeny, having this genetic superiority from two different grandparents, is a big bonus.

He was so far back in the backstretch (7 lengths behind the 18th horse) that the announcer missed him as he rattled off the horses in order. He counted off 18 horses, then went back to the leaders, then caught himself and said, "and FAR back of the pack is Mine That Bird"...

agreed, mine that bird showed he's for real, had the race been a bit longer,no doubt he would of caught up

My suggestion: go to the video with this title...
Kentucky Derby (Gr.I) - Churchill Downs - 2009 - Vencedor: Mine That Bird
...and watch U.K. race-caller's Mark Johnston's far better call of the race.
That video is also good because of its split-screen, go to 1:47 in that video and the horse that blasts into view that second out of the back of the pack is Mine That Bird -- then follow him.
I played that other video of the race over and over watching the end, Borel's ride is a jaw-dropper!

No Donerail was the biggest upset winner. There was also another horse not sure what year that won the race..basically broke his maiden and was the only race he'd won.

Is the biggest upset ever still that horse from the 60s? Proud Clarion I think it was?

  • @greenleaflink
    @greenleaflink Před 15 lety +1

Yeah I agree, the announcer was pretty bad...I had no idea what he calling...but it was a upset so i guess he didn't consider him.
I wish they did it over with a marker over mind that bird so i can see better where he was and how he did that jump forward.
    thanks for the post btw
