  • It's a good time to be alive in America. The wealthiest nation on earth, though, is full of unhappy people, Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker points out on GZERO World with Ian Bremmer.
He explains that the US is an outlier among affluent Western democracies. It’s rich. It’s more or less democratic. Yet it has a lower life expectancy than its counterparts. It has poor scores on math tests, more obesity, more drug addiction, and more violence.

Our entire government at the federal level and also somewhat at the state level is entirely 100% captured by corporations and the billionaire donor class. Every politician and every regulatory body. We have a 0% effect on federal legislation meaning it doesn’t matter if 100% of the population or 0% wants something created or passed it will not change the outcome. The most obvious result of this is the prioritization of shareholder returns over everything including human lives. It doesn’t help the bottom line to facilitate the betterment of workers lives in the American system so it is never prioritized and even fought against regularly. At this point our elections, News, and entertainment is just theater meant to distract and divide us in the hopes that enough of us will never be able to unite to change the status quo.

That's it. It is not a mystery. We have an oligarchy masquerading as a free democratic society. Why do we "punch below our wealth?" Because that wealth is concentrated so much among so few and those few rule the country. A United States with greater well-being would not have such inequality. Having more inequality is what the oligarchs want because that is what accelerates the accumulation of wealth and power right into their hands. If they could give up their addiction to such things, we would all be better and healthier and happier, but greed might be the most difficult habit to overcome.

USA does not hold in high regard the things that make people happy. In fact, as a culture, we are focused on the opposite - the shallow and the empty, greed, envy, image, gluttony, material items. We are trapped by our egos. Love, kindness, true friendship, nature, peace, acceptance, forgiveness and surrender are sacrificed for the illusion of happiness through monetary wealth and privilege.

All around happiness also isn't "plummeting" yes there's been a drop but these countries still remain the happiest in the world.
The reason for the decline is due to economic strife, not caused by the system but by a global pandemic and war/sanctioning of their biggest energy suppliers.
So in short, yes government policy does drive happiness. the biggest similarity the happiest countries in the world have is their governmental system which usually includes a strong welfare state and emphasis on equality and equal opportunity.

Nobody is flocking to Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Poland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Slovenia, etc. in the same numbers as the Anglosphere or Francophone world because they don’t want to learn the language which is a tell-tale sign they have no interest in assimilating into the culture and society of those nations. Sure those nations take in immigrants/refugees, but when these nations have high taxes, conscription, etc., combined with an obscure language and usually cold climate they aren’t the first choices of people looking for the quickest route to economic advantage at the expense of the local taxpayers.

so that proves my point about country-shopping:
      1) people landing in the countries in the north mediterranean and travelling north (asylum is in the closest possible nation to where you are fleeing which isn’t in a state of conflict) instead of declaring where they land. They don’t want to work and wait for handouts, they want the affluent northern nations with woke liberals and their taxpayer-funded handouts immediately
      2) hungary putting up fences makes sense, both as a duty as an EU nation bordering a non-EU nation, and especially now with that non-EU nation involved in a domestic armed conflict…literally refugees, Plus, people didn’t want to come TO Hungary so much as go THROUGH it, just like your example of landing in Greece and Italy then moving north.
      3) Most Ukrainians are NOT flocking to UAE, Japan, etc? almost like some are actually fleeing but some are using the circumstance to country-shop…except for some who are coming to Canada, no shock shock there (see point 4 about votes, and then tie that in with having the lowest COVID vaxx rate in Europe and coming to Canada which had locked down its own citizens and forced them to take the vaxx but somehow determined science didn’t apply to Ukrainian refugees and allowed them in unvaxxed but detained their own citizens).
      4) Switzerland is tighter than a duck’s butt regarding immigration…I move there in 2 weeks for a year of professional training, and it was a nightmare just for that, whereas permanent residency and citizenship are a much bigger beast. They actually require you to become Swiss, and have three levels of citizenship (national, cantonal, and communal), of which all are required to grant citizenship. No wonder it’s not high on the country shopping list, although people still try and some still do get in…mostly having a child or marrying a Swiss national
      5) My dad’s family comes from Finland and some live in Sweden. They moved to Swwden saying it was a better country, and I can tell you that for other than very gradual immigration like Switzerland for most of the past that all changed under recent woke agendas, which caused people to flock there who didn’t otherwise want to ever go there, and while still there they do not have any interest in becoming Swedish in the traditional sense which begs the question why did they go? Answer: handouts
      6) Regarding Finland and even Estonia: when you take a climate roughly as cold as Sweden, with both nations closer than Sweden to where the majority of “refugees” come from, but require they learn an obscure language to function as well as national military service…that is what dissuades people, which is why Sweden was the better option. It’s not the distance, it’s the service which people don’t want to do. Considering Sweden brought that back recently, yet another reason Sweden doesn’t look as good anymore.
      7) Look at the Netherlands, and their very sudden about-face. I wonder why.
      Notice a common pattern?

There's nothing wrong with USA talking about the official GDP numbers. In fact the GDP per capita of the USA is absolutely fantastic and higher than every single country of the world, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, UK, even Sweden, Austria, Finland, etc., except like 5,6 or 7 of them. I think Ireland, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Norway and maybe Denmark got higher GDP per capita than USA. The problems for the USA start when you look at the median wealth per adult and you see that USA is like only 26th in the world, just barely ahead of Slovenia. And France, Canada, UK, Australia and ITALY AND SPAIN are waaaay ahead of the USA on that list of the median wealth per adult citizen. Then suddenly you realise that average citizen of the USA ain't living super well at all. 60% of Americans don't even have 1000 dollars in the bank. That's attrocious.
