  • Beta blockers are a group of medications that are used high blood pressure, angina, anxiety, essential tremors, heart failure and abnormal heart rhythm. Beta blockers are generally safe to take, and side effects tend to be annoying and not life threatening. The incidence of the most common side effects is between 1-10% of the population taking beta blockers.
Abrupt withdrawal of beta blockers may cause rebound hypertension, tachycardia, arrhythmia or angina (beta blocker withdrawal syndrome). It is very important that you only alter your dosage under the supervision of your health care provider.

I had nearly all these side effects from metoprolol prescribed after heart attack, except I gained 14 kg over 12 months even though the nausea made it difficult to eat enough food for my calorie needs. I became depressed, no energy, lost the will to live. I finally got doctor to stop prescribing it and immediately began to lose the weight and got my life back. Blood thinner also began damaging my liver so stopped taking that as well. Disappointed that GP just followed the 'guidelines' for medication rather than listen to my concerns about my declining health.

i had a heart attach 4 years ago, 1 stent put in. doctor put me on 5 meds, beta blocker, BP med, blood thinner, stain. i felt worse on these meds than i did before my heart attach. my heart doctor would not recommend me coming off meds. I slowly took myself off all meds. today, my BP is normal without meds, RHR normal without meds, cholesterol normal without meds. taking meds everyday is not wroth it when the destroy your quality of life

Been on metoprolol for nine years and they upped my dose for no particular reason in 2020. I dismissed all the side effects as symptoms of the condition that the beta blocker was intended to protect against (a long qt interval that has never been a problem for me). I am now having many arrhythmias like SVTs and recently had a one time only Afib episode while drinking a cold drink which left me with a much lower resting heart rate (usually averages around 55 now it averages 54 but dips as low as 39 or 40). This is extremely uncomfortable and gives me palpitations all day and night long with long gaps between beats. I have also had nightly nightmares that are terrible --- usually after a few hours of sleep and closer to the morning which has resulted in me not wanting to go to bed. I hope to come off this drug and try something else at a lower dose.
