Recently Creality have asked me to try out their new laser cutter and engraver the Falcon 2 and this time they've given me the challenge of making a scale model for the modular model railway. Luckily I've been in need of a cottage to go by the lineside but none of the currently available kits really fit with what I had in mind so this was the perfect opportunity to try making one myself.
What do you think, can I really laser cut an entire building as a beginner and what will the end result be? Furthermore, what does this mean for the future of scratch building? Watch on to find out!

Yeah they’re definitely expensive but worthwhile I think for those who are wanting to scratch build lots of buildings - especially if you’re doing rows of terraced houses or similar. Thanks for watching 😃
Yes is the expense of purchasing the unit and accessories. As far as computer goes, there are a ton of CZcams videos to get started with the software.
That's a really nice model. I can see how the cutter could be very useful for all manor of projects as well as buildings, such as tunnel mouths, bridges, fencing, and walls. I guess you could even create a wagon body to fit a bare chassis or something like that.
Definitely, it really has a multitude of uses. I’ve seen people use them for making wagons too - mostly for garden scales but I have seen one or two making 00 gauge wagons to fit on 3D printed chassis too. Thanks for watching 😃
Really nice looking construction! You've got to be happy with how that turned out, especially being the first one. Fingers crossed we see more custom buildings as the modular model railway grows.
Been using a resin printer for rollingstock and small buildings, might need to add a laser to the tool kit. That Creality Falcon is impressive.
Thanks, yeah for a first attempt this is incredible and it's definitely opened up a whole new world for me... I'll be building entire model villages next! I imagine a laser cutter would work well in tandem with a resin printer where you could laser cut large structures and then smaller details can be 3D printed. Thanks for watching 🤩

It's definitely become a really useful tool in my arsenal and it's already been put to work for various jobs over the entire layout. Earlier today I was making fence posts... much easier than drilling through matchsticks one by one like I have in the past 😅 Thanks for watching 👍
Thanks for some additional ideas to make my buildings even better. I purchased a laser over a year ago with the purpose of making things for my layout. I find that I'm always seeing more and more ways to making things with the laser. Have made fences, paver stone sidewalks, backyard sauna, goods storage building, LED light supports, wooden track crossings, etc. Is an endless list of options. In addition to the items for the layout, I've made a ton of things from all sorts of materials for my shop, gifts, etc. Will watch for more videos of laser projects. Thanks,

Thanks! It's not far off is it, I still think of laser cutters being these big industrial machines for use in warehouses but these new hobbyist diode lasers are a really great tool for modellers. That is a great-looking cottage. I was watching the building flexing and I said that needs an inside wall to strengthen the build. Which you then did. Lighting and some interior details, plus guttering and downpipes would make a more impressive cottage. There are a load of extra things that can be done with this little kit. Well done Martin. (Thailand)
Yeah as I showed in the video I've added in access for lighting at a later date. For guttering and downpipes you'd be better off using 3D printed parts (I recommend Modelu personally!) where the focus of this video was to show what could be achieved with just the laser cutter. Thanks for watching 😃
Always good to see what youre up to. Great affect on the house. I agree using machines does give an amazing effect. Personally I use a creality 3d printer. It has opened up opportunities to create things simply impossible using traditional methods.

You can use microscope slide slip covers for glazing, it is very thin glass, comes in various sizes. 100 pieces for a few dollars.

Really great tutorial. Very clear and professional. You certainly should be very pleased with the cottage and the way you made it easy to construct using the tabs. Just one comment is you could have used the laser to scribe the roof as a guide for the slate strips.
Thanks, I'm definitely pleased with the end result. I did consider creating a guide on the roof too but in the end I opted not to as with how the slates overlapped it was just easier to go by eye with what looked right - it also added in a little bit of random variation too which was nice. Wow, you did not need to go that hard on those cutting shots! Wondering if you'll do something similar for some of the faster trains in your running sessions.

If it wasn’t so expensive I’d totally get one of those laser cutters but I’ve recently been looking at cricut or similar machines to design buildings on. I don’t know if the same technique of slots would be possible on it but hey, never know. Either way, I think machines like that really make things easier and more precise with scratch builds
Maybe there are facilities where you can rent a slot on one of these machines? I think I've seen similair situations with 3D printers at certain libraries or something. You take your own filament with you, reserve a spot and then print it. Or perhaps somebody you know might be able to print it at school or university if they have one of those machines?
@@treinenliefde definitely not a bad idea. I have a graphic design qualification so designing a building wouldn’t be an issue so investing in my own machine would be a good way to make buildings how I want

Get a pair of 1, 2 3 blocks to help keep walls square while they dry.
Depending on how the laser cut structure is designed this shouldn't be necessary as it will naturally want to dry square anyway. Thanks for watching 👍

I like the idea of starting laser cutting, but I’m thinking before I try that I might get into 3D printing. These laser videos from you have been super neat though, and before I watched this and your previous video I had been thinking about getting a Creality S1 V2 as my printer, and now that I’ve seen how good their laser cutters are, I don’t think I would regret purchasing one.
Honestly I think laser cutting is actually easier than 3D printing - at least in my experience. But you do need more space for it which is something to consider. Creality are well known for their 3D Printers though so I'd say that would be a good choice if you do go down that road. Thanks for watching 😃

Yeah, I've definitely heard that 3d Printing is difficult, but I want something I can use for objects around the house, as well as for making spare parts for locos and for other modeling purposes, so I think it's the better choice for me. Thanks to you i have bilt my own base bord and i am making my own model railway when i do paint the base bord what colour should i use and what brand thanks😊
@user-tn2xf7zq3k Any DIY emulsion should do (cheapest?). Brown/Sandy/Green; If you are just going to paint then pick a colour that suits your look. If static grass then Brown/Sand will look more realistic, but wear might expose patches of the base colour. Other options are a slightly darker colour than what you are covering with (scatter, dyed sawdust, painted sand.) this will help add depth to your groundwork it also won't look quite as obtrusive if any patches develop. Speak of which, if you are doing any plasterwork add a bit of the base colour to the mix, if later on you get a chip you will not then get a White spot screaming look at me!
A lot of DIY stores offer a matching paint mixing option, this costs more but can give you the colour you want. If you go this route get them to write down the exact colour formula they use, just in case you need more at a later date (guess how I know this can be a problem).

Chris has pretty much covered this in his own reply already but personally I just use cheap acrylics/poster paint, usually a brown colour to act as a layer of mud/dirt underneath the static grass. Best of luck with your own layout and thanks for watching 😃

You wouldn't really be able to create that with laser cutting. I imagine 3D printing would be a better way to go for intricate circular details like pipes and guttering. Thanks for watching 😃

love the video. how do you make the brick patterns? for the pattern overtop and the mortar joints to make individuals bricks?
To create the pattern on the building I just found an image of stone brickwork that I liked and then set that as a layer to be engraved into the surface. To cut out the individual bricks for the joints (like on the chimney) The pattern was drawn using a series of lines with the outer edge set as a cut layer in the same way the laser cuts out the rest of the pieces. In my opinion there's two ways of looking at it - if you're someone who wants a lot of custom buildings, structures and details then this could pay for itself fairly quickly instead of buying and adapting kits/traditional scratchbuilding.
Alternatively, right now laser cutters are indeed expensive but remember how expensive 3D printers used to be? Now though they've become more popular and as a result cheaper to the point where a lot of modellers have them... I think that's the next step for laser cutters. Thanks for watching 🤩

It was engraved as an image rather than a line engraving. Takes a lot longer to produce but definitely creates some interesting results. Thanks for watching 😃

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! No, the laser would melt plastic so sadly the plasticard sheets would need to be cut by hand still. This is why I was keen to engrave the stone pattern directly onto the wood. Thanks for watching 😃
This is insanely impressive! What would you say the learning curve for the design program is?
It's incredible what's achievable with something like this. Lightburn for controlling the laser is relatively easy to use and there's plenty of tutorials out there from how to get the most from it.
Personally I prefer to design in Affinity Designer and then export the final designs to Lightburn for cutting. I'd say being able to design what you want is probably the hardest and most time consuming part as that's the "creative" bit. But actually cutting the parts is fairly straight forward. Hiya, the stone effect is basically an image of a stone pattern which the laser engraved onto the surface. It does take a while to do this way though. Currently I'm not able to share anything but we are possibly looking at adapting it into a kit at some point. Thanks for watching 👍
Great video. I have the same laser cutter and will be using it for my layout when I get the garage sorted. Do you design in Lightburn or something like Fusion360 and export it? Also, MDF contains formaldehyde, and cutting this by laser gives off some very nasty fumes that will harm you and eventually make you ultra-sensitive to it. Ply is much better and safer to use.
Personally I design in Affinity Designer or Adobe Illustrator and then import the designs into Lightburn for final tweaks and to arrange everything for minimal wastage.
I use different materials depending on what I'm making, so for example in the video before this one I used ply where this time it made more sense to use laserboard and MDF. Ventilation is needed regardless of whatever material you're cutting, which again I spoke about in the previous video and will be talking about more in another video in the future. Can you make a tutorial on drawing the parts, bricks, and door/windows in Fusion 360 or a similar CAD program ? How you go about it from start to finish with mistakes. Thanks
Hi Mike, that's definitely a possibility for the future. I don't use Fusion360 myself and designing for a laser cutter is essentially 2D work - but most of what I would show would work with any software. I'll keep it in mind for a future video topic. Thanks for watching 😃

How do you stop the wood from warping, my 3mm ply goes in flat but once I score with brick texture, it warps the wood like crazy. Also which paint spray do you use? Thank you
Generally cutting/engraving the inside sections first then working outwards but also trying different things with the speed/power can be helpful too. You don't have to cut everything in one pass so if you're having problems it might be best to try 2 or more passes at a lower power. I also have magnets to hold the material down to the bed but that tends to be for thinner material.
The spray paint was all just cheap acrylics thinned down for use in the air brush. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃

Alternatively, you can see how all the pieces fit together so maybe have a go at reverse engineering your own design. Hiya, basically any vector based drawing program will work. Personally I use Affinity Designer 2... Adobe Illustrator is another popular option and Inkscape I believe is a free version. Question, now I’m not a railway officianato, nor do I have a model railway (yet). So I don’t know if this is a real life thing. But why do you take out the sleepers when you’re connecting track together?
It might be in relation to the product but I’ve seen you do it a lot so I’m curious.
Hi there, so I tend to use flexitrack on my layout which you cut down to the length you need. When you want to join two sections of track together you need to add the fishplates to the rail but the sleepers stop these going on properly, so I remove a couple from each end while I'm initially laying the track. Then when it comes to ballasting I'll slide them back underneath the rail so there isn't a gap. Hope that makes sense and thanks for watching 😃
