      Perhaps this section is about peaceful death - going out slowly in your sleep, surrounded by family and friends.

    11:24 he quoted the La Folia chord progression here. La Folia is one of the oldest melodies and harmonic progressions in European recorded history, and countless composers have made pieces on it, including Liszt in his Spanish Rhapsody.
    edit: Dies Irae also fits under that chord progression which is weirdly satisfying.

      I knew this piece had dies irae but didn’t know that it has a specific different chord progression, interesting

    • @Chromaticon
      @Chromaticon Před 3 měsíci +1

      La Folia is not the source for this. Liszt uses an exact setting of the Dies Irae chant by Louis Homet, in which the odd-numbered verses are sung in chant while the even-numbered verses employ four-part chordal harmony. Liszt uses this harmony to create a new set of variations in this part.

    Un Liszt che si esprime al meglio delle sue qualità di virtuoso pianista e tecnica orchestrale.

    Wow Bartok also played this . His recordings of Scarlatti tell us he was a fascinating musician !

      I feel like this piece’s percussiveness predates Bartók’s own style. It wouldn’t surprise me if Liszt was one of Bartók’s inspirations.

    Ok, I thought this was the 1849 version when I found it, but great recording nevertheless. Noseda gets it right here, he is uneven in the symphonic poems.

      In fact there was the Dies Irea motive in The Shining but from another piece of music:
      "Dies Irae segment from "Symphonie fantastique" by Hector Berlioz, performed by Wendy Carlos and Rachel Elkind"

    A brilliant rendition, such clarity of solos I've never heard before. Totentanz might become the theme song for the Republican party or of everyone if Putin decides to end it ALL.
