  • Rare recording of a Chris Barber concert in East-Berlin, 1965.
    Personel:
    Chris Barber - trombone
    Pat Halcox - trumpet
    Ian Wheeler - clarinet, alto sax
    Stu Morrison - banjo
    John Slaughter - guitar
    Micky Ashman - upright bass, replacing Dick Smith.
    Lu de Lussanet - drums, replacing Graham Burbridge, due to illness at that time. Lu or Louis was a Dutch drummer who played with the Dutch Swing College Band in the sixties.
    The Barber band was one of the first jazzbands that was allowed to play in the former DDR.
    The quality of the tape is not that good, but is very unique.....

    Amazing- a Barber version of Kanonensong from Dreigroschen as well. I knew Barber was a serious academic musician,but this is a wonderful surprise. Brilliant.

Unvergessliche Zeiten. Er war und bleibt ein Juwel = Klenot.

    Fantastic video ! For me (personnaly), it's nice/great/emotional to see/discover/hear "on stage" Mickey Ashman", the original bass player on "Every Body- Loves my baby" record by Chris. Mickey was one great/solid bass player in UK. Thanks for upload. After this all years, Chris play stiil today in UK with his Band.

    Fantastic. Thank you so very much. If ever invited on to Desert Island Discs, one of my selections would be Chris Barber's "Le Martinique" which never seems to appear on Jazz compilations. Was lucky to be around in the 1950's so enjoyed this wonderful music. Stayed at the Grand Hotel Torquay recently which coincided with a trad jazz festival which was fantastic. So glad this music is still enjoyed and appreciated and will hopefully be discovered by current and future generations. May I just add Ken Colyer's Old Rugged Cross would also be included. Again, so many thanks.

      The Martinique was always my favourite until it took second place to the flipside of Bechet's Petite Fleur: Dans les Rues d'Antibes, though I have to say that the Climax Band of Toronto have improved on Bechet's original recording. I haven't heard that Old Rugged Cross for eons, but the mere thought of it brings tears to my eyes. Better google it, eh? My Martinique is on a 7" EP dated 1954. It shares a side with Chimes Blues.

    Watching this clip brings back a lot of happy (and sometimes sad) memories. Sadly everyone in this mix is dead except me and perhaps Lou Sanett depping on drums for an injured Graham Burbidge. To all my German friends who still like Jazz I send greetings. I live quietly on the South Coast of England. Come over and see me sometime. Stu Morrison. Tenor Banjo😎👍🪕

      Thanks for your reply Stu! I am from Holland and get hold of this video and put it on youtube. For traditional jazzlovers this is a great video. I liked your style of playing the banjo very much! Very nice to see a reaction of one of the bandmembers! And indeed., all of them passed away. Also Lu de Lu Sanet… Hope you are okay!

    The musical quality is high and thatś more important than the tecknical quality.
    The melodies are:
    * Highway to Heaven
    * Mackie Messer (Mack the Knife) from the "Die 3 Groschen-Oper" music Kurt Weill
    * Kanonen Song from the "Die 3 Groschen-Oper" music Kurt Weill
    * Everybody Loves My Baby...

    I talked with Chris Barber about this concert 2 years ago, since it involves another Dutch musician in the C.B. band. Graham Burbidge was not there, because he was injured. They were allready travelling allready in Germany when after a car stop the manager of that period closed a car door while Burbidge had not fully entered. So his hand was between the door........ Then they needed a replacement and hired Louis de Lussanet, who had just left the DSC.
