    The long-term consequences of taking synthetic hormones are uncharted territory! Find out what you can do to support your endocrine system instead.
    0:00 Introduction: Should you take hormones when you get older?

    5:42 Statins and hormones
    6:21 How to deal with hormones and aging
    In this video, we’re going to talk about hormones and aging. Hormones are messages that travel through the blood and tell the body what to do.
    As you age, you might end up with low levels of certain hormones including testosterone, estrogen, thyroid hormone, and growth hormone.
    Oftentimes, people try hormone replacement therapy to replenish their low levels of hormones, but synthetic hormones carry major risks! Many people believe that bioidentical hormones are a safer alternative, but there are no studies to support this.
    In order to properly address low hormone levels, it’s important to look at why your glands have stopped producing the hormone in the first place. Here are 5 reasons why you might have low levels of hormones in your body:
    1. Counter hormones like insulin, estrogen, and cortisol nullify and block other hormones.
    2. Insulin can increase androgens in women and decrease testosterone in men.
    3. Endocrine disruptors come from chemicals in the environment and can block estrogen hormone receptors.
    4. Junk food and alcohol cause a fatty liver, limiting the liver’s function. The liver is necessary for the regulation and production of growth hormone as well as the thyroid hormone.
    5. Statin drugs affect hormone production because they block the body’s ability to make cholesterol, which is necessary for the production of many hormones in the body.
    If you want to regulate your hormones without the use of synthetic hormones, try the following solutions:
    ‱Healthy Keto
    ‱Intermittent fasting
    ‱Cruciferous vegetables
    ‱High-quality glandular supplement

    Dr Berg I am a huge fan of your work! But I felt the need to comment on this video . I am a personal trainer and very much into your way of thinking that diet is key in keeping the body and mind healthy. I went through menopause at 46 and it happened suddenly and drastically, I was so exhausted I could barely train and care for my young son. I researched non stop and made sure my diet was excellent for this stage of my life, I kept to low carbs and did intermittent fasting. I still did what exercise I could and I tried all the natural supplements for menopause including adrenal support etc . At one point I felt so bad, anxious, depressed drained that I felt like I didn’t want to live the rest of my life feeling the way I was. The thing that changed everything for me WAS bio identical hormones that were specifically made for me! I now feel back to the person I was before menopause and am able to enjoy my life again, I’m now 51. Blood tests revealed I was producing virtually no oestrogen and I was put on a combination of this, progesterone, and a little testosterone and dhea! I do feel a bit concerned about risks but without taking this my life would be miserable with little quality. I spent a good few years trying the natural route with no joy so I do think that for some people like me this option is actually a life saver . Thank you and look forward to your upcoming videos, you have taught me a lot ! @fifdee

    It sucks being a woman. I had my hysterectomy about 3 yrs ago. My Dr said my uterus was the worst he had ever seen other than one with cancer. He said my uterus was purple and covered in tumors and my ovaries and tubes were so small that one of them didnt show up on the test. Anyway, I am on natural hormones. I know there are risks but had no choice. Dry skin, hair coming out, bouts of crying spells, night sweats so bad I would wake with puddles of sweat on my body. Had no choice. All these symptoms left with the hormones. But they are the lowest amount which I did request and they do have testosterone. If I forget to take them after a couple of days, symptoms come back. Being a woman is a blessed thing. Women are amazing and have amazing capabilities. It's the corrupt medical system that is the problem where they see these smaller easy-to-fix issues and just treat the symptoms instead of trying to heal the body. Iodine, cruciferous/DIM, avoiding all the pesticides they allow in foods, promoting more stress-free living, and so on, would make everyone live better lives. But no one is told any of that by doctors. Instead we're victims to big corporations.

    Addressing health with pharmaceuticals always ends up a game of 'chase the symptom' and the problems pile up.

      Medication and hormone therapy are 2 different things. The latter being safe as long as you have a knowledgeable doctor that isn't overdosing their clients beyond their clients natural ability to produce them at their hormonal peak in life usually between 16-25, which is what causes the side effects. This is specially the route to take when you aproaching older age as the body even in a healthy natural state simply doesn't produce the optimal amount of hormones as it did 20-30 years prior as any machine organic or non organic becomes less effective over time. Maybe in the future when we can replace our glands and organs with newer ones then probably it won't be necessary to take hormones.

    As far as I know nutrition is one of the main factors that do influence our hormonal system. Others would be lifestyle related like proper sleep, exercise, time spent outside in nature and social environment.
    Things that are also discussed in playing a role are chemical exposure ie air pollution and cosmetics, noise and radiation.
    Then there are psychological factors like past trauma, stress and behavioral addictions.
    It's an insanely complex topic, but we have to start somewhere...

      I feel I am in a position of experience and might have something to offer here.
      Kristie I had a problem with excessive bleeding when I lost my ovary at 30. It increased every year and at 38 was found to have 8 uterine fibroids. It continued to increase and I grew more and more used to it until it became urgent at 46 when I started haemorrhaging.
      Unfortunately, I was working in a not-so-developing nation and did not realize what was happening until it was too late and fogginess set in, year after year, becoming less productive at work and unable to make proper decisions. I lost touch with friends and family because I was housebound much of the time and too fatigued to keep up the connections. I almost died and had 7 blood transfusions.
      I went through 80 (doubled) tampons and equivalent in pads a month. The time I almost died, I went through 160 of them in one month. I once had a steady stream coming out and had to change them every 5 minutes. I timed how much I lost in 1 hours and it was about a pint glass. Luckily it slowed down, but the next week I by chance went in for Hg test and was 5.6 and still flooding. They urgently sent me for a life saving blood transfusion and I spent 3 days in a hospital.
      The difference I felt from that transfusion was astounding. I suddenly felt energy I had not felt in 7 or so years. I never noticed how intense my fatigue because it was so gradual. It is amazing what we can adapt to in life. Suddenly, I could lift my arms without exhaustion and ride a bike - I could walk more than a block. That lasted 1 week.
      I decided then and there that I need to keep my Hg up and that I was too far gone to deny that a hysterectomy was right for me. I was sick of my uterus and never wanted to bleed again.
      I found a doctor who agreed to give me a blood transfusion if I was below 9 so that I could think my way out of the mess I was in. I had a total of 7 that year. I finally got the sense to figure out who to ask for help. I was in la la land in rebounding anemic haze prior to that.
      ***You may be suffering from anemia and not know it.
      I had my Hg levels tested on a few ocassions and they were low-ish, but normal so it was a surprise to see what was happening, yet not a surprise with the amount of bleeding I was experiencing. (My ferritin (iron reserve), I found out later, tested at 1 prior to surgery)
      PLEASE get your Hemoglobin (Hg) tested right after your period.
      *** I discovered the herb SHEPERD'S PURSE and it probably saved me from more blood transfusions. It can diminish bleeding drastically. It works. Just read reviews on iHerb
      My bad estrogen levels were out the roof and my testosterone was nil. My Hg levels would go from 10 to 5.6 (or so) each month. I struggled to do anything to raise my Hg (through diet/supplements) and lower my bleeding (supplements) so I would not die the next month because I had driven my finances to the ground and could not afford surgery. I was stranded. Most likely, you are not stranded and have access to medical care.
      I suspect there are many anemic women out there who are housebound and too lost to help themselves. I watched some of these videos back then and was too foggy to understand them.
      Take-away
      NO. 1 - Get your Hemoglobin (Hg) tested - right after your period. And your Ferritin tested (iron reserves)
      No. 2: If you bleed this much, there is some underlying cause and it is doing more harm to you than just the bleeding - generally explained in this video. Hormones will not help this. You need a good naturopath, or natural doctor like Dr. Berg to help you sort this out at the core. If you can afford him or someone else, do it.
      No. 3: Living with anemia for a long time can slowly impair your functions to the point where you are lost and unable to help yourself.
      No. 4: Short-term help with heavy bleeding can be alleviated with the herb tincture 'sheperd's purse'
      I hope this story will help someone. 3 years later and I have so many residual issues from living in that state and my finances are shot. Although my uterus is gone and I am no longer low in Hg or Ferritin (60 now hurray), I have not discovered or cured the underlying issues and cannot afford help.
      I can now focus enough to learn from these videos and little by little, I am learning what is wrong and can address things one by one. The pieces are starting to fit together. They give me hope. Thanks to Dr. Berg.

      ARCHANGEL OF LIGHT I think you're right. My menopause symptoms were leading me to be extremely sick with no sleep, hot flashes with extremely high heart rate, and generally feeling like death. With bioidentical compounded progesterone cream I can sleep for a full 6 hrs, wayyyy less hot flashes during the day and my heart doesn't get so high, this must be better for my health than what I was going through! Even low carb high fat could only go so far, I resisted the hormone cream for 1.5 years until finally decided to try it a couple weeks ago and it's amazing.

My symptoms are not worse than that I could treat them with supplements/healthy food/meditation/yoga etc., but I recently realized (thanks to Menopause Taylor and researcher who studies why dementia is much more common in women) that the symptoms during this transition time are just the tip of the iceberg. The real problem is the diseases hormone deficiency leads to, such as greater risk for heart attacks (strokes etc.), alzheimers (and other types of dementia), osteoporosis.....

    I think you accidentally missed an important step that you have spoken about before. When you take those exogenous hormones, you tell your gland to stop producing those hormones. Perhaps you can discuss the different benefits between allowing your glands to rest vs training your glands to produce.

    • @BillDeWitt
      @BillDeWitt Pƙed 6 lety +5

      Well, I've heard arguments on both sides. I don't think we can say it's helpful without more information, which perhaps Dr. Berg has. Personally, I stopped taking thyroid hormones so that my glands could learn to work.

    • @HawaiiLimey
      @HawaiiLimey Pƙed 5 lety +1

      What happens is that with the diminished requirement to produce certain compounds the body epigenetically adjusts to limit it's own production. The risk being that the original problem that caused low levels remains (or becomes exasperated) and seizing supplementation leaves the physiology in a dearth that can take a long time to recover from. Also the exogenous hormones are never at the same natural levels or rate of delivery and can have a de-regulating affect on other signalling pathways. Dr. Ben Lynch is an authority on this.

    • @HawaiiLimey
      @HawaiiLimey Pƙed 5 lety

      In the case of thyroid the most likely culprit is the liver. So if you take exogenous thyroid hormones, even though it immediately improves your health your liver will still be under performing on a whole host incredibly important functions. More so if you're on other medications it is the liver's job to filter out the excess thus putting it under greater strain. So essentially short term results at the cost of longevity.

  • @alphacause
    @alphacause Pƙed 6 lety +7

    Dr. Berg, as usual, you crafted an excellent explanation. Even if one is not well acquainted with the endocrinology, just a bit of knowledge with regards long lived people, who reached a ripe old age, while staying in ample health, demonstrates there is no need for hormone replacement therapy. Hormone replacement is fairly a recent phenomenon, but people have lived from 80 years of age, to well over a hundred years of age, a long time before hormone replacement therapy has ever been in vogue. Its time that people start to think about aging "gracefully" through proper diet (i.e. keto/intermittent fasting), proper exercise (resistance training and HIIT) and making other prudent lifestyle choices (getting proper sleep, sufficient sun exposure, and relieving stress). Trying to cheat aging with hormone replacement could be potentially dangerous, as evidenced by menopausal women, who, using estrogen replacement therapy had increased incidences of cancer, and bodybuilders, using testosterone, who experienced a whole host of negative side effects. The body lowers the production of these hormones, and down regulates the hormonal receptors, as one ages, for a reason. What we look at as a negative consequence of aging, maybe a way that the body is protecting itself from being over saturated with such hormones.

When I started keto and lost 19 lbs I got a weird rash and extreme cystic acne in my chin, my smile line, and forehead, but the majority of the breakout, huge white heads and cyst were in my chin. That tells me my hormones were acting crazy. I know that fat stores hormones so I’m thinking since I burned fat, a lot of hormones got released and caused my acne. Mind you I’ve never suffered from acne like this growing up. I only had one or two breakouts rarely. I guess my question is, what should I do? I was in ketosis for six months dropped forty pounds when suddenly I started getting dizzy, found out my blood pressure was crashing 20 points from sitting to standing. I was desperate to figure out why! I increased water intake and minerals in my water. The situation got very bad and I passed out at home which wound me up in the hospital. My blood pressure was too low. I have never felt so scared and out of control of my body. I just wanted to be healthy. So I started eating carbs again which for me is not good. I recently started on BHRT (different than synthetic hormones). It was able to get my life back. I strongly recommend it to everyone who is suffering from menopause symptoms. For more information, you can read Suzanne Somer's book.

      @@tinkymcginnis I believe so. For more information, you can read books and watch youtube videos on the top. I tried changing my diet, Dr. Berg's estrogen DIM supplements, exercise. These all helped a little but it didn't relieve my symptoms. BHRT is a game changer.

    I am post menopausal and have been following these suggestions for a long time. My recent bloodwork shows I am no longer producing testosterone, estradiol or progesterone. Isn't it true that my glands have stopped producing because I am post menopausal? For lack of any other options, I am starting BHRT this week.

    I did a search to find out how to come off of bio-identical hormones, but did not find anything from you. Could you address this please? Especially the Sottopelle method where the testosterone soy pellets are inserted into the buttocks and dissolve over time (4 to 6 months). I understand that part of this is Healthy Keto and IF, but would like to have more info to help the body as it adjusts. Thanks!

    What about substituting Hormones with Essential Oils? Rosemary Drains 36% more excess estrogen then prescription.
    Sandalwood increases Testasorone,
    Thyme increases progesterone.
    Dr. Please do one on these.
    Doctor I put Rosemary Essential Oil on my neck during PMS so that it can penetrate the thyroid quicker and signal the pituitary gland to moderate secretion and my PMS issues have decreased 80-90%. Barely no cramping from excess estrogen.

    Dr Berg, Thank you so much for your research on this topic. I am very grateful for the warning, as there is a lot of confusing information out there. While I understand some women will proceed with hormone treatment, if their symptoms are severe enough, at least we can make an informed choice. I was considering bio identical creams, thinking they were safer, but will make adjustments to my diet first.

    Hi dr. Berg,
    A question. If you do intermittent fasting, how is it possible to get in all your protein?
    So if you eat only 2 times per day, how can you take in 120-150 grams of protein?
    Is eating 60+ grams of protein per meal healthy?

    @Dr.EricBergDC Would you do an updated video on bio-identical hormone replacement therapy? I've searched through CZcams and can't find anyone sharing the potential risks but only the benefits. I have yet to find anyone on CZcams who is against BHRT except for you. Quite a few well renowned functional gurus highly recommend it. I am on the fence about this subject. I love the benefits that it provides but not sure if it outweighs the risks. I wish there more actual patient reviews who have had a long history of being on BHRT.

    I tried DIM and it put me in Vertigo attacks
    So weird but I actually found quite a few other women who had the same side effect. No more of that for me. I’m trying to stay keto, cycling now and intermittent fasting. Just took a full blood and urine test and only high markers in cholesterol and triglycerides still slightly high. So I’m hoping in a few months that will correct
    But estrogen testosterone all good
    I’m 65 and def need to loose 10mins and get more exercise but I feel balanced. Thanks Dr Berg
