- WLtoys 144001 motor replacement, how to get the motor mount screws out. I know it should be simple but on this car it’s not. My best description is that the screws are glued in.
It’s probably too tedious for most people but one guy reached out in frustration so this is for him.

Great tip I have a 6s 144001.. Had that issue when I bought it.. I just bought another mount lol good info for new guys

🔥 Fast???
Great job. Thanks to you i replaced the first engine without damaging anything. Versaflame dremel helped destroy the glue. 👍❤
Maciek Gwóźdz thank you for letting me know. I’m happy I could help!

Great Vid! I was gonna try the soldering iron, but now I think I will go straight to my heat gun. Awesome Dave.
Vallone's RC Hobby hey, thanks! I don’t think mine had enough thermal mass, probably because of the aluminum mount acting as a heat sink.
Good luck with yours and have a great day! 💯👍🏻👍🏻
Because of this good vid all parts came apart without damage to anything ,Thank you! That set/grub screw needs alot of care. None of my phillips screw drivers fitted the motor mount screws but a pozi 2 fitted very well and with the heat gun on them as you showed here the glue that the manufacturers used softened and they came out. The other difference I did was put the motor in the vice vertically as my mount was barely any wider than the motor on one side.Edit not pz2 it was pz1 that fitted well.
+TheJs12347777 thanks for stopping by and checking it out.
I don’t know what they use for glue but the heat does soften it up.

MyPassionRC- Studio XD40 Lou's RC Garage thanks a bunch. I try and help as many people as I can. SOMETIMES the hobby shop is more about the money than helping people.
I still think it’s usually better to start at the beginning and learn as you go instead of spend a lot of money starting in the middle to then decide you don’t like it.

wow cant believe you got a wltoys grub screw out without just giving up and pulling the whole pinion out like i did
It’s pretty easy with a little heat. They use some sort of yellow glue.
Thanks for stopping by and checking it out.

thanks you to
I had to order a new motor mount those screws are really soft 👍🏻
Cam row drone Good morning! ☀️🌞😃 I stripped the screws on my first car and drilled the screw heads off. Then I still had to pry the motor mount off the screws. That’s when I realized they weren’t just using loctite. I figured since so many people were have this problem I’d try and help out with a video. I even have someone with a Traxxas day he had the same problem.
Have a great day my friend. 💯👍🏻👍🏻
I use a $3 mini torch from the dollar store. Works awesome and fast.
Awesome tip! 👍 Anything that makes a lot of heat works well. The faster you can heat it up the better.

Sorry to hear about your wife's mother! Great job David. Learn something new about using heat. Thank you!😊
307 Wyoming 4E You’re welcome! That’s what this is all about for me.
Have a great night my friend.
Thanks again.
My soldering iron wouldn't get it hot enough either, I just bought a new motor mount.
Traxxas locks their pinions on as well, that I just cut it off the motor.
Why do these companies do this for "hobby grade" cars when parts are meant to be worked on and changed. Especially Traxxas, most of their cars come with optional pinions!
Mark G Good morning! I guess because they do have a tendency to vibrate loose but I think what they’re doing now is overkill.
Thanks for watching. 💯👍🏻👍🏻
Have a great day!
I just stripped a screw on the bottom. It was the screw that holds the motor mount to the chassis. One came out easy, the other one wouldn’t budge and is now partially stripped. I’ll try a heat gun or soldering iron next time.
Jason Giles thanks for watching! Be sure to find a screwdriver that fits the screws. That’s a big problem on RC cars is the big variety of tiny screws.
Have a great day and good luck!
RC ModSquad Lololol... yea I’ll need a “fool’s” luck to take this screw out.
Jason Giles I hate spell check sometimes. I know better than to do this while I’m eating breakfast. LOL
RC ModSquad no worries. I knew what you wanted to say. Auto correct is too strong. I’ll let you know what happens when I try to get the screw out.
Jason Giles thanks. I figured you knew but it still is frustrating. Just when you start to trust autocorrect it jumps up and bites you. LOL 😂
Do you know the correct gear size. I know it's a 27 tooth pinion but don't know the pitch. Hoping you can help. Thank you for the informitve and helpful videos. They are great.
Hey quick question maybe you can help what's the little black thing on I think it's called diode, cuz I just seen a videoon CZcams of guy cut that piece off and ran it on 3's...,.cuz I ran mind on 3s and that little piece broke off and start smoking
Black and silver Raiders I don’t recommend 3s with the stock ESC I’ve burned out two testing these for everyone.
I did a video testing the diode removal and I found no benefit. Here’s a video of that test. It’s a bit long but I was trying to explain my method. I hope that helps.

@@RCModSquad ok thanks
The screws that hold the motor from the bottom are stuck and there not coming off can you tell me anything that could help?
All the screws are glued in including the ones on the bottom. If you use a heat gun on those just like I do on the motor mount screws they will back out once you heat up the glue.
I hope in Canada they have truggy tracks🙏
I haven't ever taken any RCs to Canada so I'm not sure but I bet they do. Thanks for stopping by. Have a great day and be safe out there.
Thanks 👍
G. M. You’re welcome and thanks for stopping by. Have a great day and be safe out there!
G'day, I have the wowstick screwdriver too.. Which bits were your using on the car?
stellaskitchenbass Howdy! I actually used a bit from one of the other sets and they aren’t labeled. They just happen to be the correct size for the wowstick. I just test fit bits until I found the best fit. None of them were actually correct. Without the heat I would have stripped the Phillips head screws like I did on my first car.
Thanks for stopping by. Have a great day!
I started stripping my hex screw on the pinion and idk what they used looks like hard glue man the thing start bubling up i just gave up if i er need a new motor well i will order a new pinion and will put a brushless on because that thing is just ridiculous. I might need to cook the screw with a lighter for 10 mins
Surchaufeur I hit it hard with my heat gun. Up to the point it started to smoke a bit. I really think it is some kind of glue.
Thanks for watching and have a great day! 💯👍🏻👍🏻
Cool video. I Just received my 144001 today and after a 5 minute test drive the motor is quite warm... but it was 92 degrees at the time. Should I be concerned about the motor temp and should I remove the motor and install thermal paste between the motor and aluminum chassis plate to draw away some of the motor heat ?
Thanks for stopping by and checking it out.
Depending on how aggressive you are on the throttle it’s going to get pretty warm. Anything you do to get rid of heat helps. The thermal paste to the chassis helps and the do have heatsinks for the motor and even one with a fan but the body on these cars limit your options.
@@RCModSquad thanks for the quick reply. This is my first RC car so I'm pretty conservative on the throttle... it's faster than I thought it would be.
@@TrailcamsRCPhotoFlying2000 You’re welcome! i think this is a great car for the money. Have a great day and be safe out there!
Hi, I watch your video to late and now regret because I damage the screw and my question is what is the best solution to take off mount?
I’m sorry you had this problem. If there is a little bit of the screw still there you might be able to still heat it up a bit.
About the only way to get them out if the have been damaged too bad is to carefully drill them out.
Good luck and I hope you get them out.
Hi! Nice video. Can you just tell me what size of set screw driver you used here at this timestamp: 4:12
I really would appreciate it. Thanks :)
Thanks and thanks for stopping by. It is technically supposed to be a 1.5mm but I’m using a 1/16” SAE. It’s a really tight fit but it does fit and it less likely to round out the grub screw.
Have a great day and be safe out there!
@@RCModSquad Thank you, alot.
@@RCModSquad Hi again. So I tried removing the grub screw out but it keeps jumping and I can't get it out. I don't know what the problem is... could you help me?
Thanks.

also do you recommend these cars over the a959
they look amazing
but from what i have seen one crash and everything bends and breaks
Legendary Rc thanks a bunch! I have a 959-b and a 979-b and I prefer this car.
Honestly if you’re interested in the 959 stay away from the “B” model. The 959 uses a 390 motor and would be easier to handle. The 959-b is faster but it’s a chore to keep it going straight, but it can be done.
Hitting a curb with the 144001 at full speed is probably going to break something.
The 959-979 is all plastic so it may flex and absorb a little more impact. I think the 144001 is a lot easier to handle.
I think anything you upgrade to metal tends to cause more damage on a hard impact.
I don’t know if you’ve seen my other videos but I’m building two other 144001’s. One brushed and one brushless.
If you get the 144001 and leave the stock electronics in it do yourself a favor and stick with 2s batteries.
If you want to see what happens on 3s I posted it so others wouldn’t have to find out the hard way and maybe save a little money.
Thanks again and have a great day!
@@RCModSquad i already have an a969
i am going to buy an a959 for parts
also i want to get another rc
my options are the 12428,the 144001 and also the hsp 94123 touring
i know they are all different but those are the ones in my budget
the 12428 cant handle high speeds
the 144001 is extremely fragile
(i am sure i will crash atleast once )
i would have gotten the hsp touring
but i want to do a bit of offroading as well
what do you think is the best choice
subscribe
Legendary Rc if you’re wanting off road the hsp is out as you know. I have a 12428 and it’s not as fast but it’s very rugged. It’s top heavy and rolls a lot under power but, if you’re not on the throttle in a turn it does pretty good. I also think if you take the spare tire off the back it would help. I haven’t tried that yet but I plan to.
The 12428 is by far the most forgiving of a crash. It’s pretty much all very flexible plastic.
I think a tire upgrade and axle spacers would help. If I get time I think I have a set of tires and spacers. I’ll try and throw them on and do a quick video this week.
I’ll check your channel out in the morning! It’s been a really long day.
Have a great night! 💯👍🏻👍🏻

Is it necessary to grease the differentials Before running the car
I haven’t had one or seen anyone else’s that had absolutely no grease in it.
While it’s not a bad idea and there are a few reasons to add more grease I have to disagree with the people that make a big deal if adding grease before you ever drive the car.
It makes good thumbnails to say “THINGS YOU MUST DO BEFORE YOU DRIVE YOUR CAR” but it’s a little overboard to me.
It’s honestly not a bad idea to check things out but to claim you will destroy your car if you don’t check the diffs first is a bit over the top.
My third 144001 which I left stock has never been apart for anything.
🔥EXCELLENT share🔥It will help someone for sure🔥💯🔥✌️😁🔥

I don't understand why did you put back the same motor why didn't you go with a performance brushed motor 550 13t
The Scanline Man sorry for the slow response, I just saw this.
I didn’t put the same motor back. I used a 17t 540 motor. I really don’t think the stock ESC would handle a 13t motor for anything more than a few speed runs.
Have a great day and be safe out there!
maybe they changed something my car is kind of new within the last few weeks. I got those right out and couldn’t get the screw out of the gear to take the motor out I didn’t take any of the extra stuff off but maybe I’ll have to
Acetone. Nice thanks
I just realized I have a new motor mount but whatever they did to that set screw it’s decimated. Acetone didn’t help I think they stripped it out putting it in. But the actual motor screws came out really easy. Surprisingly. I was a little confused to see the issues you were having. I had totally different issues. But I appreciate you. I am one of those new guys. So thank you for your time. I hope the personal issues you’ve had are working themselves out.
What size allen is on the pinion screw?
The best fit I found was a 1/16” 0.0625”
I don’t know why but it seems it’s the only SAE part on the car.
I should probably add that the only way I’ve found to get it off is with heat. It seems they used some kind of glue rather than loctite.
@@RCModSquad I swear they welded mine at the factory
@@ROTORHEADPR 👍😂
Can i put a959b motor on 144001?
Yes you can. It will fit perfectly. You will need to heat all the screws up to get them out.
The screws that go into the motor mount and the grub screw on the pinion are all glued in place so the only way to get them out is with heat.
Here’s a video that might help. czcams.com/video/U4r4pTbF4rs/video.html
I can’t get the set screw out of the gear 🤦🏻♂️ driving me crazy.
beuatiful video, hello all my friends please stay connected🌷🌹🌿Thanks
I can't get the bottom screws out
They use some form of yellow glue rather than Loctite. It helps if you heat the screws up and be sure the screwdriver you use fits the screws correctly.
You can use a soldering iron, by putting the tip directly on the screw for a while. I've also seen people use a small torch or a small nozzle on a heat gun.
❤️
Sherry S ❤️ you too also as well. 😃
My technique that works well, is to use a butane torch, and you have apply direct heat to the screw area, until it smokes. It usually takes a few good goes. It is normal for a fair bit of smoke to emit from the burning loctite. When it has neared the end of smoking, from the loctite burning off, it is usually easy to then get the screws out. That is how it works well for myself. I spent a long time wondering how to get around this problem with the wltoys rc cars. Then I came across one tip off online, that suggested a lot of butane torch heat. The only information they got wrong, was how they thought the grub screw was secured by solder. I also tried to use solder, but solder 'will not' adhere to the pinion or motor shaft. Therefore it had to be loctite. It really annoys me, just how many ppl have their facts wrong, and the lack of advice, and poor advice out there🥴🤪. It sure makes life more difficult. I've noticed a lot of smartass hobbyists online, who actually spend more time showing off what toys and income generation they have(eg. the unboxing and playing around), and sounding annoying, rather than user friendly, straightforward, helpful advice for others. Which suggests to me, that they don't really care about others, so much as themselves🤮. It proves a lot more costly and frustrating, when I have to figure things out through trial and error. As our only local rc hobby shop, is also operated by an Ahole, who's best advice was, for me to search on google🥸🤪. It really makes life far more difficult, and makes me mad, purely because ppl are so tight when it comes to kindness and generosity, as if they are going to lose something by it😝
The torch does work well. I’ve watched them assemble the cars and they use some kind of glue. It’s yellow and stringy. It looks like 3M glue to me. I wish they would use loctite.
There are a lot of people show “how” to do something and they really don’t know how the thing works.
It’s popular to be flashy and break things on camera. I try and stick to less expensive entry level stuff. I think it’s a better entry point to the hobby. You don’t need to spend a lot of money to have fun.
Thanks for stopping by. Have a great day and be safe out there!
@@RCModSquad I like your philosophy to life👍. The 144001, 124017 can actually perform with some of the more expensive rc cars, running on bigger motors and batteries. I was watching a guy running a 8s lipo on a traxxas type rc, which did 88klm runs. They are surprisingly a high quality robust car of hobby grade. Eg. I've been knocked hard just at a short distance with the 144001. They hurt if not careful. And I would say, if I was struck head on by it at 60klm, it would leave a serious injury. So they're not just regular toys. Yet their price is very deceiving, at a toy grade price. But I'm sold on them as a good allround rc buggy. Very versatile as an rc vehicle, with potential for customising in various ways. PS. Yes, I think a lot of youtubers are there to try and sell entertainment for a handsome salary. Not to truly help others out unfortunately. It's very selfishly competitive that way, with a lot of fraudsters pretending to care, but are really out for themselves primarily. I get that. But I still think it's wrong. If you have any further updates on WL toys pinion gear resizing, I would be very interested to find out. So far, I've discovered other ppl encountering issues with finding the right fitting gearing tooth fit. As not all pinion gears fit the same regarding tooth spacing. Eg. One guy claimed that wltoys have their own particular compatible gear tooth sizing. That was all the info i found online regarding pinion gear matching for the WL toys. Thanks for the reply.
@@MrTurboCat21 You’re welcome! The gear pitch they use is pretty rare. If you want a smaller pinion you can use the pinion for the A959 BUT you have to drill the hole out. The A959 uses a smaller motor shaft.
The other option is to change the pinion and spur to a more common gear pitch but then you will need an adjustable motor mount to set the gear mesh.
@@RCModSquad Yes, that's what I've heard also online. PS. I also made the mistake of putting on too larger tyres, and overheated the motor, till it died. But these were a lot larger tyres made for a monster truck. Nevertheless, I have gotten away with fatter tyres. Eg. I keep the fatter ones for the rear drive, and slightly smaller for the front. Gives it a kind of hotrod look. This way, these buggies in question, can handle better. Rather than the same fat tyres on all sides. It does reduce the speed, and also increases the heat of motor and esc. That's the downside to fat tyres. And reducing the pinion size I guess, would also reduce the speed as a consequence, even though it lessens the overheating. But you can get away with larger tyres than the stock tyres. You just have to try different ones out. Which usually need super glue to fix the tyres in properly also, otherwise they will come off quickly. Good luck with yours👍.
Is really hard to open the srew :(
They don’t use thread lock they use glue so if you use heat they come out pretty easy.
@@RCModSquad thanks man! Appreciate
I can't take off the motor...on the bottom. It's like is they used super glue🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
They do use yellow glue. You need to heat up the screws like I do on the motor mount in the video. Thanks for stopping by. Have a great day and be safe out there!

Not a bad idea. Thanks for stopping by. Have a great day and be safe out there!
