Emily: Squatting like a frog and yelling "FUCK" into a talkbox
Dunlop: 👁👄👁
No kidding. Emily, if you don’t like the talk box please let me know I’ll take it off your hands
I can’t be the only one thinking of “Show me the way” by Peter Frampton right now. Am I? *shudder*
Adarsh, you win the comment section.
LMAO
I was just thinking: why is it so difficult to understand?
As a fellow Long Islander, I love hearing my accent represented so beautifully🤣
HAHAHA YESSSS I’m so honored 😂❤️❤️❤️ thanks for being here with us!!
I love the unpreparedness in a lot of your videos (see also: fart pedal) where so much of the fun is experiencing the surprises *with* you instead of just being shown things you've had experience with already.
I need to do more videos like that! 🤔
It's been a joy watching Emily go from "Pedals? What are pedals?" to "That's a good smelling pedal."
smell it. then judge. rubber is best.
@@sandraclowdus6549 John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Yea that’s the most important information we AREN’T getting. What do the pedals smell like?!
Emily immediately asking "can I say fuck" is really funny to me
This was the first video I have seen from you and it was such great content.
It was so much fun to see a harp player being a quirky goof ball swearing and throwing out innuendos when all we normally see it an elegant playing posture.
Looking forward to seeing what else you have gotten up to :D
I was randomly inspired.. or bewitched… or blessed… or again randomly inspired to get a talk box and I just didn’t really know a lot about it. The flow of this video really starts at the same level as anyone else who isn’t a niche instrument nerd. Then, the video becomes a guide while maintaining this discovery process. Love it.
This is the most smooth brain use of a talkbox I've ever seen and I love it lmao
Smooth brain is usually an insult, is it not?
@@chrispile3878 yes, it's a loving insult lol
Smooth that meat..
@@kevinrickey3925 I know ray liotta acted (quite literally) that it was quite enjoyable, as was the little guy on the airplane... clarisse starling was less enthusiastic
It's funny to see someone not know what a talkbox is and just brute-force their way through learning it.
I love this.
I found a segment of this video on reddit, and I couldn't stop laughing at your partner's laughter. So fun and awesome. I'm subscribing for more good vibes. 😂
Hahah thank you so much!!! Thanks for being here with us! 🥰❤️

One of my favourite videos so far. Between Russ’s epic laughter and the profound lyrics in the finished article at the end. Just *chefs-kiss* amazing! I hope you’re both well and safe ✌️
A talk box is basically like a manually controlled wah pedal. With a a wah pedal, you can only do the "wah" syllable, or some version of it, whereas with a talk box, you can use the shape of the inside of your mouth to make any syllable sound you can think of. People often combine them with expression pedals just like you would control a wah pedal. You don't actually have to "talk" into it and say words 😆
Living on a prayer by Bon Jovi is a good example of the wah/woah syllable.
The other canonical talk box song is Peter Frampton's live "Do You Feel Like We Do" (1976) starting at 7:20 czcams.com/video/hUioud7Qtsw/video.html#t=7m20s
Let's not forget Rocky Mountain Way by Joe Walsh.
David Gilmour on "Pigs" for me, but Emily just saying "My name is Emily..." over and over was so goddamn funny I don't even care about those other guys any more
And let's not forget She's a Woman by Jeff Beck, R.I.P.
This is now the gold standard of pedal review videos.
LMAOOO THANK YOU RHETT 😂❤️
I think it's the powder coated steel or gold anodized aluminum standard, but yes.
99% percent of guitar related videos are boring as shit. This is great!
Oh yeah! LMFAO. 👍🏻😀🇬🇧
Way too cool. You're such a sport for playing along. And it was a lot of fun laughing with you both too . Possibilites are endless
Watching you explore just how far the harp can be taken as a musical instrument is always a joy. I wonder how many of the techniques you're inventing in these videos will become popular in music?
I love seeing Emily get distracted by shiny pedals.

Once imprinted with the smell of electronics, always imprinted with the smell of electronics.
I believe the “Talk Box” was originally designed for laryngectomees (people that have had their vocal chords removed, and they cannot create sound). The Talk Box was a way to inject sound into the oral cavity (mouth). Then, like you did, they were able to speak/talk. The tubes they used were smaller than the one that you had. 🤔
The earliest ones I saw used musically were by pedal steel guitarists. 50+ years ago I made one by sawing the horn off a horn speaker, squeezing a hose over the horn stub and wiring the speaker terminals to a guitar amp speaker out. It's that simple. But playing it isn't that simple. This was about 8 years before Peter Frampton showed everyone how it's done properly.
No actually the first "talk box" you speak of was actually a laryngophone, it is made different than the modern talk box, it was first used in the 1930's. The laryngophone was placed against a persons throat and vibrated the throat instead using vocal chords to create the vibration. In the first usage of a laryngophone, a musician (Alvino Rey) played a guitar while his wife sang with a laryngophone pressed against her throat.
The talk box like the one used today originated in the 1960's, Pete Drake used it:
czcams.com/video/_R9an8AU3No/video.html
Here's a guy showing the usages of a talk box and how to use it:
czcams.com/video/wsOgs_jPjVk/video.html
The Who used it in 1967, as Peter Frampton to good effect as I mentioned in another comment:
czcams.com/video/zLgeTtYwQ7o/video.html
@@davidwittie4177 I was going to post a similar explanation. We did what we had to do back in the day.
@WalterGreenhill I am familiar with laryngophones. If you'd reread my comment, it said "The earliest ones (talkbox) I saw ...". You can't dispute my own memories and teen hobbies. But you may belabor historical accuracy which was not any point I was making at all.
Interesting! Nice to know the original use for it!
This is the first use of the talk box that's made me want to play with one. I love how robotic it sounds here. Great video. 🤘❤
Best 7 & ½ minutes of the whole month 😂
Thank you so much for making me laugh
You guys hit me right in the funny bone with this one. From Russ gagging when he tried the talk box to the whole Emily cursing into it. I was laughing so hard. 🤣🤣🤣
HAHAH thank you so much, Jed!! so glad you enjoyed it 😂❤️
I could just imagine you doing a whole album of really spacey, trippy, atmospheric electronic stuff. Would love to listen to that
Same here!
Yes please
oh that would be great
That has to be the cutest first try of a talk box I've ever seen.
pretty cool clip, Emily. The talk box part was hilarious but also sounds pretty unique. The octave pedals sounded great with the harp, and the volume pedal sounded cool with the reverb. Those volume swells sounds amazing on the harp. This is truly unique.
"Do You Feel Like We Do" by Peter Frampton is the quintessential talkbox track. It's a pretty neat tool because if you're good at it, you can use it to sing and not have to worry about finding the pitch. Swatkins is really good at it.
Roger Troutman and Zapp also made much use of the Talk Box.
Swatkins! That is who I was trying to remember!

You two have way too much fun...and I'm enjoying it along with you.
Both of you just losing your shit at this is absolutely amazing. I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard at a CZcams video in so long 😆
The Talk Box goes all the way back to the early '70's, when it was first called the Fuzz Bag, used by guitarist Jeff Beck(RIP). Then it evolved into the Fuzz Box, when artists like Joe Walsh and Peter Frampton started using it not only in the studio but live, as well. It's one of those peripherals that's been around forever yet, very few people know about it until _someone_ turns it into a hit machine again.
Don't forget Nazareth on Hair of the Dog!
I think the most well-known use of it is by Richie Sambora in Bon Jovi's "Livin' On a Prayer." He also used it on "It's My Life" (that was my first time ever seeing one, in the music video).
Mick Mars from Mötley Crüe used one at the very end of "Kickstart My Heart" too.
I can see why people don't use them a lot. They are pretty gimmicky. 😀

If there's a way to combine this and the Fart Box to make talking farts come out of your mouth, that would be the zenith of comedy.

This is absolutely glorious and I love it. Peter Frampton famously used talk boxes extensively, and he would tape it to the side of his microphone with just enough hanging past the end to stick in his cheek pocket. If you’re interested in these kinds of effects, I recommend checking out the TC Helicon vocoder.
Excited to see you use the talkbox again when you have more experience with it! Such a dope instrument
I was not expecting 5:06, and I definitely wasn't expecting the full body chills it gave me. You're amazing, Russ' laugh is incredibly contagious, and I'm glad this video was suggested to me, it's the best thing I've watched in months!
Yep. There was a little bit of magic going on there.
You were right. So hauntingly beautiful.
I MUST KNOW THOSE NOTES.
Something about that sound hits. I haven't slept well since. In a suite way
"Cause when you talkbox this is what you do: You play your notes on your "harp". What you play comes out of the tube not the other way round, which is a common misconception. So to clarify: No, you're not singing, you make the lyrics with your mouth but you cannot use your vodal cords, which is hard, which is hard." :D
This video popped up on my feed for the first time (Never come across the channel before) and I honestly have to say it's one of the funniest things I've seen in a long, long time!!
Ok first time EVER coming across this channel and not knowing what to expect I found you so adorable and funny AF.... and then watching you play I saw your focus and concentration as you played.... Will be checking out other vids and yes I am a new SUB......thanks for the moments of laughter....

You holding a harp and screaming fuck into a vocoder earned you a subscription on my first time ever seeing you.
lmaooo WELCOME TO THE CHANNEL :)
Talk box not vocoder
Vocoders modulate your voice, talkboxes are synthesizers that replace your voice.
Hey look, a correction chain! I have one: Talkboxes aren't synthesizers; they're modulation. A synth *creates* sounds (hence, the name), whereas the talkbox just modifies the sound your instrument is making.

This had me genuinely crying from laughter 😂
I love this. The channel in general. For someone to just send her a pedal, she decides to try it for her CZcams channel on a whim, that video blows up, and suddenly she has a successful CZcams career experimenting with guitar effect pedals with a harp. Amazing.
Likable people are likeable.
thank you so much 🥺❤
I swear my brother and I had about the same conversation the night we experimented with my Rocktron Banshee 2 talkbox. 1st time using 1 of these is definitely an experience. I don't pull it out much anymore but won't sell it either. And it is heavy also.
That volume pedal with the reverb, into the talk box with a bunch of non-lexical vocals like "whoa," "ooh," "ahh," and other filler words could make for an interesting layer in a song
I really like how the reverb pedal + volume pedal allows a swell of sound without the initial attack of the plucked string. Really ethereal effect. And, as a Marx Brothers fan, I wondered what Harpo could do with all this stuff, but then I realized he wouldn't use a talk box at all, because he never talked.
This was way better than I ever could have imagined

@@timnewman1172 Yes, that'd be a good one, too! I wasn't trying to say that was first, just that I hoped she'd listen to it, especially given that it had already been mentioned. But yeah, Rocky Mountain Way uses it in a quite different way, where it seems to be more of an instrument, and less of an obscured vocal track... so, yeah! Both please!
Also... hah, I thought I was commenting on a Virgin Rock video for a moment there, and thinking you were mentioning firsts for the history of rock series... haha, here it matters much less. Still, both are worth checking out. :)

These two were clearly the trouble makers in the classical music class! 😁
Seriously though, when she got to the pedal - the very first part sounded like music out of the movie Blade Runner.
This deserves serious artistic exploration. The sounds coming out are awesome!
I absolutely love how experimental you can get with some of the stuff you guys get. You can paint so many beautiful, unique audio pictures when you find the right mixes of equipment.
That was really interesting, and I loved it.
The final track gave Radiohead's Kid A vibes. I genuinely think the talk box can be used musically, with intent, just like vocoders or autotune tracks. Nice work!
I was looking for this comment. Definitely made me think of Kid A right away.
Her talking through the talk box reminded me of when I was a kid talking into an oscillating fan. Lol. Great video!
Now THIS is tube tone, and dare I say the true voice of the people. Today's episode confirms my suspicions that the Poly Blue Octave is secretly a harp pedal that just happens to work on guitar/bass, it sounds so darn good with the attack and the harmonics of the harp, especially pleased with how the in-built modulation works on these sounds. Plus I love seeing what makes you guys laugh your collective ass off ("what is this") and what cool stuff you come up even with something as simple as a volume pedal.
"What do normal people say into a talk box?" hate to break it to you but the moment you put a speaker into a hose into your mouth uhhh normal's not even in the rear-view mirror because the figurative vehicle is a dune-buggy made out of a lawnmower, paperclips, the healing power of Shrim, and friendship.
I'm a big fan of how the MXR Talk Box in particular has made the whole tube-in-your-mouth thing a bit more doable and honestly safer because prior designs you had to put the talk box between an amplifier head and speaker cabinet, so you were taking the full volume of whatever volume your were sending into the speaker cabinet literally right in the teeth and if the talk box stopped working your amp head would explode; some talk box users even have a separate amp and pedal chain just for talk box in order to minimize potential snafus.
Much love and remember that pedals ain't shit but hose and tricks.
LMAOOO Noyd we love u 😂❤️ I love the mental image of that figurative vehicle hahah
now I understand why everyone was saying this could be bad for your teeth!!
Now *this* is epic.

Talk box doesn't necessarily need talking; it's just named as such due to the way it's operated. It is, however, intended to let you use your mouth to change the sound of an instrument with whatever shapes you can make with your mouth.
Glad I watched this. Don't believe I've ever heard someone make a classical harp swear before. =)
Talk boxes have been around for at around 50 years. First time I heard one was on either "Rocky Mountain Way" by Joe Walsh or "Show Me They Way" by Peter Frampton.
