  • Lately I've been reading a lot of solo and co-op games. So you get a few videos about them! You might not necessarily be interested in the games themselves, but they often have good ideas that you can use in whatever skirmish or wargame is your game of choice. In this video I take a look at the Rangers of Shadowdeep books. This one is particularly interesting as it's designed for solo and co-op play byt default.

Very nice video, thank you. I am wondering if these new archetypes bring a new way of playing, with a dedicated spellcaster, and how it could work in the game.

I'm not sure it necessarily opens up a new way to play, but that's mostly because you already have a ton of options with the main book. You can already take spells and use them with the Ranger. A Gathering of Heroes does give even more options though and they are probably a little more thematic. The Scrollmaster of Melnoth for example starts with Magic Restistance, can carry extra scrolls, gains experience whenever they find scrolls, and has some special rules around using spell books. There are limitations around armour and weapons, and the starting skills differ. I think you could make a caster focused character without the extra book, but this certainly does make it easier!

Do you have any idea what to substitute the giant flies as?

I've been thinking about this for a bit. Giant Flies are actually a little creepy so I was thinking maybe crows or something like that. After a while looking around I'm currently thinking I'll go with these very very cheap toy flies. www.amazon.co.uk/Plastic-Simulation-Realistic-Halloween-Outdoor/dp/B0BRPSRMYF they're still flies but as toy flies they're not too creepy. If I wanted I could stick them on bases with paper clips to hold them up and decide if I want to paint them or not.

@@optimalgamestate haha great idea, I think I might actually have some in my old childhood things... Beats £7 for 4 official flies. I was thinking about bats but they already have representation in the game.

I went down the toy flies route. Stuck them on some wire, painted them up and hey presto!
