  • For every big name on the console family tree, there's a branch that ended up going nowhere. For each Sega Dreamcast, a Sega Saturn; for each PlayStation Portable, a PlayStation Vita; for each Nintendo 64, a Philips CD-i. They're the consoles that, whether good or bad, simply didn't become the success they were intended to be. Here are 10 Weird Video Game Consoles Forgotten By Time!

    Must be a generational thing, but NO WAY has the Neo Geo been forgotten by time in my mind. Exactly because of it's crazy game prices

      Agreed. If anything, the NeoGeo AES has a legendary reputation. The fighting game community is an enormous, worldwide gaming culture and the Neo Geo and it's games are still a vital part of that.
      SNK even released a standalone, mini version of the MVS a few years back.
      Very odd to see it on this list.

      Agree, there are some consoles on this list that I feel shouldn’t be on here. The AES being one least deserving to appear on this list.

    Counting the Nomad is a stretch as it was more of another model of the mega drive.
    The Mega Jet and X eye are more hidden to the public eye if you ask me.
    Also the videogame crash happened in 1983 not 1985. Colleco didn't fall instandly but that is still when they lost most of the momentum they had buiild up to that point.

      That includes the PSX Models of PS1(extremely rare), Game Boy Light(the last console Gunpei Yokoi made before he died, was a Japan-exclusive), Amistrad GX1000(infamous for literally detonating due to the terrible plug output unless you use third-party cords, got recalled because of the horrific fire hazard), LeapFrog consoles(including the notorious Didj, which can catch on fire after eating away at the 2-3 batteries you've inserted in the back, was also recalled, but thankfully compatible with the Explorer), the bootleg console/famiclone Lexibook Family Console(gained infamy after it was reviewed by DarkLordJadow and played by Vinesauce Vinny, btw the "wiimotes" themselves look more like pregnancy tests or shampoo bottles than convincing controllers), and the Atari 1200(the 2600's obscure successor).
      Also I adore the PocketStation and wish Sony would make the PS5's handheld compatible with the main console, or they could make the PocketStation's successor for the PS6. Both reasons are quite good in concept.

    The 3DO failed mainly due to the price. It only had one launch title which is pathetic. It also lacked games that people wanted and had very few platformers and RPGs which were pretty important back then. Lucienne's Quest is one of the few exclusive (sort of) RPGs on the 3DO.
    Internet support on the Game Com doesn't work anymore.
    6:32 That's a horrible design if simply changing out games is a hassle.

    The Saturn (just) outsold the Dreamcast worldwide so it was an odd comparison to kick the video off with, especially considering both are widely and fondly remembered these days for their amazing catalogues of unique games.

    • @EoR_2B4GOT10
      @EoR_2B4GOT10 Před měsícem +2

      Kinda depends on how you wanna view it.
      If we look at the japanese market the Saturn came out in 1994 and was discontinued in 2000.
      The Dreamcast launched in 1998 and was discontinued in 2001. The sales numbers of the Dreamcast are just more impressive given that it was on the market for less than half of time the saturn was.

    No gamer over the age of 40 has forgotten about Neo Geo. It was the first that you could call a "superconsole" churning out a 100% authentic SNK arcade experience at home. It was the console we all dreamed of having, but knew we never would. I didn't grow up in a town full of rich brats, but I grew up in a fairly affluent town. I knew someone who had a Jaguar, someone with a 3DO, two people with TG-16's, I even knew someone with a Virtual Boy. I did not know a single person with a Neo Geo. I don't think it was the $800 cost of the console that was so off-putting (3DO launched at $700) it was the $200 cost of games. Buying a Neo Geo was guaranteed to set you back a minimum of $1,000.

    Yeah the Nomad’s library was “limited”, just all those Megadrive games to choose from.

  • @endymallorn
    @endymallorn Před měsícem

    The WonderSwan was also designed by Gunpei Yokoi, the designer of the Game Boy. That’s part of why it was successful. It was sort of a Game Boy 2.0, and then the WonderSwan Color was worthy competition for the GBA. I just wish it could have come to the west, especially the USA. That’s where Bandai really fumbled.
    And the only thing wrong with the Sega Nomad was the game. If it had been called the Genesis Portable (or Mega Drive Portable), it would have absolutely been a barnstormer. While you say that it had a limited library, I don’t consider “every game for the Genesis” to be limited. It was cheaper than the Genesis, it could be used on battery or wall power, it could, as you said, connect to a TV (and a controller, I seem to remember). Sure, it couldn’t handle the 32X, and the portability made CD an impossible task, but overall, there’s no shame on the Nomad. Sure, Sonic 3 & Knuckles is a bit awkward to play, but when the biggest knock is that portability came before designing for a game with a unique hardware setup, then it counts as a good idea in my eyes. If they’d connected it more strongly to the Genesis brand and used it as part of the budget line at that console’s last gasps, you’d be singing a different tune on it. I’d have also liked a way to play Game Gear games on it, connected to a TV, but that’s a stretch goal.

    To be fair, most of these weren't lost to time, not exactly. It was lost due to information diffusion being more difficult back then. If one seller says Sega is better, they won't even look at the expensive stuff or why its expensive. I heard the name of a couple of these in the 90s, never saw them.
    I tried to find all the games and platforms I could. But the lack of internet, and the term nerd being a negative connotation. There was no communication. The rich people got their kids these things and they weren't gamers. It was more like a trophy of theirs. I own a $600 game station.

    Gamecom weakness are outdated tech,
    as outdated as the gameboy when something like game gear was around
    and gameboy color going to come out in a few years
    and if the games weren't poorly made.
    Hyperscan was a neat concept, if the game wasn't dmc heavy with the cards, and long loading times and poorly made games.
    Maybe each cd should have the basic main game stuff and be partly playable but completable, and the cards are used to unlock the skills/power boosters and light dlcs?

      Earlier this year Hyperkin announced their own Nomad type sytem and while I'm hyped for that too I know Hyperkin announces stuff way to early so this could still take years.

    This is a very weird take on the Ouya. The thing was a scam, not "too far ahead of it's time", it was an Android phone plugged into your TV at a time before Android phones had any processing power so couldn't run anything you'd want to play on your telly.

      @RaineV1 honestly I can agree, but I specifically said Sonic Jam because it's in a VERY well-known game series, but shits on the main idea of Sonic, which is being fast. Also the music is slowed down versions of Sonic 3 & Knuckles songs for some reason, and it's really bad.
