Motocamping for the first time // Triumph Speed Twin 1200

  • Ah, the great outdoors. I have wanted to motocamp since before I ever even rode a motorcycle, and after 8 years of diversions into the supersport and retro worlds, I am finally getting to it. Hop aboard my Triumph Speed Twin 1200 for a one-night shakedown of my new motocamping setup at a national forest not too far from Washington, DC. We'll be shaking quite a bit of dust out of my YouTubing skills while we're at it...

    I feel we have 2 main types of viewers; people accomplishing moto-camping frequently, and ones who can only dream and watch the vids, rarely getting out there. I’m the 2nd, and I appreciate the bee-jeezass out of your production efforts. Especially considering YT is littered with content creators who “know what they’re doing”. Well done sir!

    YESSSSS! Please keep making content. Your amazingly well produced videos were one of the main reason I switched from a BMW R1200RT to my new and much lighter Triumph T120 Black. Sometimes less is more. I have no regrets either. Only 100 miles on the clock and I’m loving every second of it!

    Nicely done. Really appreciate the behind the scenes creativity. I'm not a moto vlogger in the true sense but do put out video rides with my yap shut, and for good reason. I am pretty sure if I tried doing what you did here I would have a lot of f-bombs and other bleeping edits in post. My favorite shot from your morning b-roll: 15:48.😉 Like you, I've been motorcycling for just about 10 years and have only recently started moto camping -- precisely 2 times. But I've caught the bug and want to get out and camp more. Not quite yet to the point of wanting to moto camp on a two week adventure but that could be a possibility once I've gotten into a good routine for overnight camping. Looking forward to more from you. Subbed.

    A handful of cotton balls dipped liberally in vaseline and carried in a ziploc starts a fire everytime. Love the video!! Especially love the riding shots and displaying your humanness!! lol

    • @InTransit8911
      @InTransit8911 Před 4 měsíci +1

      An even easier and less messy approach to this is to keep the cotton balls dry in the ziploc and bring a tube of Vaseline to squeeze out as needed.

    Enjoyed watching, would like to give the Moto camp thing a go,I always tell myself I’d enjoy it. I’ve done a ton of travelling via Moto but the convenience of cheap accommodation in my travels through Europe have seen me carry the ultra light camp setup but barely use it, go figure. Thanks for sharing and inspiring to at least think about giving it a go in the future.

    No offense, please don't take it the wrong way; I personally wouldn't invest - in regards of Motocamping - too much into Titan Cook Stuff & Gas Stoves.
    Alot of people doin' it. I know. It works. It gets you by. If you Hike with it, you will most certainly prefer the light weight - on a Motorcycle though, it doesn't make sooo much of a difference. Stainless Steel stuff is cheaper, more robost, needs less attention and you can simple put it over any kind of fire anyway and actually cook with it.
    Which brings me to instant food stuff; great. All those Hiking Food Stuff is also great *if* you are hiking. (Although I would then find my favourit military food items and be on a look out, sometimes they have sales for that, or look up some tutorials how you make that stuff at home - I mean, if you hike more than one hike or two a year, they can get expensive af)
    Yet on a Motorcycle ... Sure, if you're on an adventure trip several days - With no town you pass through, sure. On the other hand, for those Weekend trips and even bigger tours on which you go through towns with Supermarkets; they have alot of stuff too. And on a Motorcycle you have often more space as whenever you hike.
    In addition to that, you can also sometimes pick up fresh meat and cook that or other stuff. Fresh vegetables; Onions and Potatos, Beans and Noodles don't have to be cooled down.
    Combine that with an Alcohol Stove e.g. or a simple Camp Fire and you've a real cooking expierence - which is actually pretty relaxing - and often food which is more to your own taste.
    Plus, it's often even far cheaper.
    Whenever I am on Festivals, Meet Ups or even in Camp with others on Tours, the first days everybody is like "Look, how fast haha" and after day three - they can't see those expensive hiking meals anymore.

    Great stuff, plus nice to get a warm-weather trip video when it's still winter. :) What Tamron lens do you have on your A6300? We should organize a DC motocamping trip when it warms up!
    Also on the note of getting your GoPro to look more like mirrorless footage, what I've found works nicely is setting the frame rate to 24fps, locking the shutter speed at 1/48 and locking the ISO at like 400 or so, then using a set of ND filters as appropriate for lighting. It gives you a nice blurring of things as they go past, creates a lot of motion! Looks more like the Sony footage that way. :)

      Thanks! I'm running the 17-70 f/2.8 in this video. And thanks for the tips, I'd just been using auto shutter on the GoPro. If you ever want to organize something, just email me! (I have abandoned Instagram for the time being)

    Welcome back, VB! I’ve missed your excellent content. I’ve been moto camping on my Speed Twin. Planning one on AZ soon. My sure fire starter recipe: Vaseline rubbed into dryer lint stuffed into a toilet paper roll core. Btw, how many miles do you have on your ride now?

Either way Ill still watch, but youtube won’t suggest your videos even though I subscribe to your channel. I have to remember to go and check. And since you don’t post often I don’t check often. Today I was trying to remember the name of your channel so I could check for something new. Luckily it came to me after thinking about it a little while. Dude, now you are just showing off. This was a laugh out loud funny video that managed to still look beautiful and sound great. The warts-and-all approach was just perfect.
    Quick technical question for you. I have a dead-catted stereo recorder on my rear fender in a setup similar to your own. How are you able to get such a nice, snarling sound without all the transmission noise I am getting?

    • @VanBlamm
      @VanBlamm  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Thanks, T.M.! I unfortunately don't have much audio expertise to offer; my setup was very much a "set it and forget it" situation when I figured it out all those years ago. It's possible that the "low cut" feature of my H1 Zoom is helping my recordings out a bit? I am actually starting to feel a little unsatisfied with the amount of fuel pump noise and chain noise I'm getting, and may rethink my setup soon.

    • @TrekkieMoto
      @TrekkieMoto Před 5 měsíci

      I think your exhaust is making it sound better than my stock item, but you still seem to get less chain nonsense than I do on a basically identical bike and microphone arrangement. 🤔

      For a one-night campout I just pre-measure Trader Joe's instant into an empty disposable water bottle, then add water and shake it up when it's time to drink it. I only drink coffee cold, can't stand hot beverages of any kind.

      @Chadsworld85 Před 5 měsíci +1
