  • DIY 3rd Generation Toyota Highlander Dash Speaker Replacement - Let's face it, even the "upgraded" JBL sound system in the Toyota Highlander is a disaster. In the Toyota Nation forums, many people have done a lot of things to fix the situation. One of the first things people may do is just replace the speakers in the dash. Some have used Kicker 3.5" speakers. Others have tried out several and settled on the JBL Club 3020 3.5" speaker. This DIY video done by a true car stereo installation noobie (me) shows replacing the dash speaker with the JBL Club. So, I spared no step and show each step I did as I did it (one take, no edits, other than pausing recording).
Overall, after doing the first speaker, this second speaker took a total of about 45 minutes to complete (including taking this video).
Applies to 2014 Toyota Highlander, 2015 Toyota Highlander, 2016 Toyota Highlander... Maybe more.
Overall, doing this did improve the sound quality a bit, mainly making the mid range / vocals a little less "tinny". I will likely add a powered JL audio sub / box combo to round out the sound, but will just accept that I'm not willing to pay the $3,000 to do the full sound system overhaul.
    Install notes:
I chose to use crimp connectors rather than solder. I have a soldering iron, but after I was unable to save the factory connector on the first speaker and Best Buy didn't seem to have a matching connector I wasn't sure how to connect the wires without accidentally melting my dash. So i just removed the existing harness all together and went with the ugliest option of crimp on connectors. IOW, I'm a noob!

Thank you for the excellent video! I got the JBL Club speakers and what a difference that made! I was going to replace the door speakers next but now won’t have to since it’s obvious the dash speakers were the weak spot in stereo system

Those connectors from the original tweeters you removed can be unwelded and welded onto the replacement speakers to retain the original wiring plug assembly. That way you do not cut any wires.

Great idea since the connector is only glued into place, I'm gonna add some extra wire and some Quick Disconnects, Receptacle for easy change out if needed.

4:14 After crimping, you can use a heat gun on those connectors to shrink wrap the connections. No additional tape would be necessary.

the headunit really doesn't send any bass signals to that 3.5 inch coax speaker you have there, even with the bass turned to max on the EQ. or perhaps it was the choice of song you used?

You can also buy a pin removal tool and pop the pins out of the factory wiring plug and insert the new ones. Ok Now My question; Already have JBL sound system in my Highlander are these speakers better than what came in the JBL Equipped Highlander?

cizko619er1 They are a nice improvement over the factory speakers. In the Toyota Nation Forums, people tried several different types of speakers and these seen to be the ones that most said worked well for them.

    • @tstfam

No - I decided that it was enough of an improvement to make it tolerable. After researching more I became convinced that I'd need to replace the hole head unit and spend $$$ to really get the system I'd want.

For clarity, its not a perfect fit. The factory speaker mount is not round. The JBL Club 3020 is. You will have to whittle away some of the dashboard plastic to get the JBL tweeter to fit. That part is missing in the video.
