    Good video.
    There are grooves in the mounting bracket to run the speaker wire behind the speaker without pinching it. No need to use the grommet on the door.

    Thanks very much Dan! I just replaced the front speakers on my wife's 2017 Highlander after watching your video. You made the task so easy-peasy for me! It took me about an hour, I didn't break any clips, and I had no parts left over except the two old speakers . I followed your suggestion too, to prevent rattle. I put in a pair of the Kicker 360 3-ways. I am an Broadcast Audio Engineer and I get so annoyed at Amplifier and Speaker ratings in PEAK. These were rated 360 Watts Peak. Which actually means 90 Watts RMS. You're right though, these speakers sound much better than the factory "where's-the-magnet" speakers! :) I watched a few of your videos; you do good work my friend. Hi I have a question, my front speakers work ones from the dashboard but the side doors speakers only playing bass like theres no vocal or the artist singing, just bass. I have a highlander as well its 2015 and i had the same situation with my camry 2017. I only hear song from the front and not from side speakers. Side speakers work but just playing low frequency vibration thats it.

    • @DansWay
      @DansWay  Před 2 lety

      My only guess there would be that the side speakers are blown? The front speakers are supposed to have capacitors to prevent low frequencies from entering. The speakers are wired in parallel. Check the wiring at the dash speakers. You should see two sets of wires coming in and out, and another set going to the dash speaker with a capacitor in-line (series) connected as well.

    I bought kicker speakers that are equivalent models to the Kickers in the video. after install though, my driver side speakers are not as powerful as the passenger side one--they are not as loud and clear. It seems like the amp cannot handle these speakers.. any insight or suggestions that are least costly? I'd rather not have to invest in an aftermarket amp if I don't have to...

    • @DansWay
      @DansWay  Před 2 měsíci

      Are you saying that you replaced just the driver side speakers with Kicker brand speakers, but the right side is factory? Or all are Kicker, but for some reason the driver side doesn't sound as bright/clear? I would sit on the passenger side to confirm that you don't have the opposite impression. The right side speakers will have a brighter tone than the left when sitting in the left seat because the left speaker is aimed at your leg. Your right ear can directly hear the cone of the right side speaker...

    Great video. Researching for my 2014 HL. What about the dash mounted speakers? Local installers say they are worthless and s/b ignored if you put tweets in the doors. Other installers have said you get better directional (L/R) stereo if you put a 3.5 inch driver up there. Are these wired in series with the door speakers or just use a basic crossover to filter out the low bands? Do you even hear them after you installed the 6x9 Kickers?

    • @DansWay
      @DansWay  Před 3 lety

      Personally, I just left the dash speakers wired in as they were. They definitely do provide the L/R directionality and some high end clarity that you woldn't get with speakers shooting at your ankles... I don't know how much better it would sound with different speakers, but I'm sure there are better choices for sure. At this point, if I'm going to spend more time/money on sound, I'll be looking to add some sort of sub-woofer to reestablish the low-end of the sound spectrum. At my age, the high end is loosing clarity, and I've always been about that bass... But I'm no kid wanting to buzz my license-fame either... Just want to have more of what I'm missing below 80Hz. I've even considered the mechanical chair shakers as an option, but likely I'll end up with a self-contained box I put in the back.

      @@DansWay Thanks for your feedback. Very helpful. If the OEM tweets in the dash are just a cheap as the door speakers, was just trying to avoid a revisit. But my wife drives it more than I do.

      @@DansWay I just picked up a 2018 Highlander and while the stock audio's a massive improvement over the 3rd gen Honda Pilot I was driving before, I also have that subwoofer itch. I'm thinking I'll use that empty storage space under the rear cargo cover next to the spare tire stuff, that's approximately 16" x 14" x 5". I'm looking specifically at the Kicker 46HS10 for its all-in-one setup; 180w with 10" sub, comes with 17' of power wiring and remote all included. My biggest concern is learning the best way to route the cabling around my Highlander, I don't know its interior design very well yet. If I pull the trigger and install it there, I'll take some photos and let you know how simple/complex an install it is. Figure I'll tap signal out of one of the door speakers for it.
      As for the dash speakers, they look to be a nearly plug-and-play swap using the JBL CLUB 3020, much simpler to access than the door speakers. There's a video here by Travis Tripp that does it in fair detail, just don't cut your connectors off like he did, strip and crimp onto the wiring farther up from the connector - and remember the $10 inline filters with 600Hz cut-off.

      I would say the installation of speakers is pretty generic. If you are going to install expensive speakers, I would most definitely invest in acoustic mat material to quiet the noisy and flexible door panels of the Highlander. You won't get good sound with an enclosure that rattles and absorbs the sound you are trying to hear. I have a video and product links on that process you can check out in the description.
