- I've seen a bunch of great creators playing "Overrated Underrated", so I thought I'd give it a try but with a medical twist. My producer, Sam, compiled a list of medical terms (and some non medical, just for fun) and challenged me to give my hottest takes right off the cuff. I touched on some really juicy subjects, like condoms, bariatric surgery, GOOP, Gwenyth Paltrow, fevers, vitamin d supplements, Doctor Oz, sunscreen, Liver King, electrolytes, the appendix, ice cream, MrBeast, Grey's Anatomy, The Good Doctor, blue light glasses, bitcoin, TikTok, 5-minute crafts, jaw trainers, impossible burgers and beyond meat, step counters, nurses, stretching, Elden Ring, Elon Musk, Dhar Mann, green tea, tesla, keto diets, cold showers, PCOS, and chest compressions, chest compressions, chest compressions! Where am I wrong? Let me know down below.
I LOVE reading your comments and take your suggestions seriously. If there’s a subject you want me to discuss or something you’d like for me to react to, leave a comment down below. Many of my videos have been born out of suggestions directly from you, so don’t hold back!

As someone who's appendix tried to kill them, appendices are underrated, they can kill you so painfully and quickly you would never expect it from a tiny organ.

Nurses are absolutely underrated. Something that doesn’t get mentioned very much is how underrated Nursing Assistants are too.
Yes, Being an RN or CNA has to one of the most difficult jobs. Very underrated a lot of people cannot do what they do.
Nurses run this world 👏
Same goes for every other hospital worker, too. Lab staff (phlebots and techs), radiology techs, respiratory therapists, paramedics/EMTs, maintenance crew, housekeeping, registration, among so many more positions. When someone thinks of hospital workers, they first think of doctors and nurses because they're in the front line, but there's so many more people who make the whole system run well that are overlooked. That's not to take away from either doctors or nurses, though. Mad respect to them for the stuff they have to deal with.
Nurse practitioners are also underrated.
@@tylergagner3065 ¹¹
I love nurses. Had my gall bladder removed a few years ago, and my "roomie" was a 78 year old man who had an appendectomy. The nurses gave him a trophy for being the oldest person to have his appendix removed in that hospital. Cracked everyone up.
5:32 Greys anatomy actually had an episode or two where the nurses were on strike, and it showed how the hostility was falling apart without them.
The hostility was falling apart? 😉

As someone who lost 240 pounds thanks to bariatric surgery, hearing him say it’s underrated and how important it can be made me feel good
Congrats on your succes! I lost almost 200 lbs due to wls, a lifetime commitment to my health, and hard work and my doctors are thrilled at my health now and I feel fantastic. It's life changing and I wish I had done it sooner.
What an amazing accomplishment. Keep it up! Much love 💛
People love talking about themselves . Overrated . Exercise whale man , so you dont get it back . No exuses
Congrats that's amazing!!! Is bariatric surgery the stomach band thing? I honestly don't know. Also if it is, is the band removed when you get to your goal weight? I know it would be more complicated than just a band, I just have minimal knowledge and would rather ask someone who had success with it than googling
@@nikolaip4947 I think it's when you cut your stomach to make it smaller so you get full up quick. Stapling is with the band. I honestly don't know i got the information from the news.

"Thank your nurses." YES!!! I've had a few hospital stays for some pretty serious cardio conditions, and no matter how uncomfortable the prescribed regimen of care is, it always makes it better for me when I not only thank the nurses but also remind the nurses of the importance of their work in saving and improving lives. I also recommend thanking the janitorial staff who clean your hospital room daily, and reminding them that they're an essential contributor to everyone who is treated in the hospital, as you have a much better chance of getting better in a clean room, both physically by removing unsanitary waste from the room, and psychologically by creating an environment that fosters a positive mindset conducive to healing.
This nurse thanks you for the reminder of how important nurses are! Thankful for everyone contributing to safer patient-centered care.
I have pcos. Was diagnosed 6 yrs back when i was 13 yrs old. I have some rare type where i get very frequent periods once every 15 days. The struggle is real and people dont understand the pain and mood swings and other stuff. Thank you for telling how underrated this topic is in society.
Yup my doctor won’t even talk to me about it till I’ve had my period for 8 years (so when I’m 20) even though I get my period every 5 months and both my auntie and mum had pcos
@@jesshulbert7526 If you are able, I'd request a different doctor to speak with about this issue. Your hereditary history is telling and no good doctor would be ignoring your concerns without carefully explaining to you why you shouldn't worry.
This!! I’m getting everything removed 🙃
I was diagnosed at 18y. But no one did anything till I was 26. Had all the classic symptoms: very irregular periods with a lot of bleeding and horrible cramps, overweight, facial hair, cystic acne, ovarian cysts, insulin resistance/pre diabetic. Went to an endocrinologist at 26y and was put on: birth control, Spironolactone, thyroid medicine, and Metformin. Within three months, the cystic acne was gone, started losing weight and had more energy, and my sugars were amazing. Because I started feeling better about myself, I started taking better care of myself: started exercising more and got laser hair removal done.
I feel that Spironolactone and birth control should be a go to for women with PCOS esp if their symptoms warrant it: severe acne and irregular/abnormal periods in the presence of PCOS should be treated and not ignored. I have scars from the acne and there were times my hemoglobin was low because of the excessive bleeding on my periods. PCOS is real and it can be treated, but most women don't know that. Go to an endocrinologist, if you can. Having a period twice a month is not normal. There was a time I got off birth control and was doing well for two years and and then it went bad. Ended up having a period every 3 weeks for 3 weeks at a time. I didn't want to go back on oral bc because it was affecting my BP. So I tried the Nexplanon (little rod that has hormones that is inserted in your arm and lasts for 3 years), bc patch, IUD, even the IUD and the patch together. But nothing worked and I had to go back on the oral bc. If you're not seeing a doctor who is trying to treat your abnormal periods, you need to find a new doctor. A period every 15 days isn't good.
I have PCOS too and besides all the internal medical issues it made me feel ashamed of my looks and not want to be touched. I’ve had the cysts burst and I dunno if that was caused by the PCOS or not but I’ve had two fibroids. One I had removed c-section style but they cut even bigger and now I just ignore the second. I’m sorry you have it as well but I can’t deny I’m happy to know someone else who understands
That nurse thing is so true. I was in the hospital for 4 months due to severe burns and I literally saw the doctor every morning for like 1 minute. Other than that it was just RNs or CNAs, or the emotional support Doggo 💕(although he was as rare as the doctor) lol. I actually grew a great bond with all my nurses, since I was there for so long, that I’ve gone back to say hello to them years later.
what happened? with the burns not tryna be nosey but I just read this comment and was wondering lol
Yeah the nursing staff is important sadly my experience was slightly different I had one nurse who had something against me. She put a note on my chart that said I get nothing without her permission. I was hallucinating from the meds they gave me and was afraid of the staff so I told my sister who is my medical proxy. After that I lost phone privileges for 3-5 days then it was just one 5 minutes face time a day. All of the other nursing staff went out of their way to help me. I had 3rd degree burns over 30% of my body.
Meanwhile the Pharmacists in the basement: 😶🌫️
@@its_alex4397 I was on drugs and homeless in the riverbed, someone poured gas and lit me on fire. I was burnt on 42% of my body. But hey it was a blessing in disguise because I am now around 4 years sober and no longer living on the street.

To the stretching pulled muscles, THANK YOU!! This advice also goes for stuff like tendonitis and such. I had a cross country coach in high school that his solve for every problem was to stretch and ice. Not only did we all end up going to the doctor against the advice of the trainers, they got mad that we didn't trust them and injuries kept getting worse under their advice.
Stretching properly can help prevent tendinitis. I’m a knitter and many knitters don’t stretch and take adequate breaks and end up with tendinitis in their thumb and their elbow!
I think the big issue for most people is cold stretching. You want to get blood moving through your muscles before you stretch them. Training for greater flexibility is a different beast entirely. Maintaining your strength through a greater range of motion but it’s also a science unto itself. I was a gymnast when I was young & some of the stretching techniques we used were…questionable.
Nurses really are under rated! When my dad was in the hospital before he passed the nurses were such angels! Always there, so sympathetic. Great vid Doc!💜
I’m so sorry about your dad ♥️
My late mother on PCOS: "Pain is all part of being a woman."
Sorry, Mom. My daughters and I beg to differ. I had to have one pong ball sized cyst removed from one of my ovaries, had some endometriosis scraped from said ovary, then later had to endure induced menopause from Depoprovera injections.
Gotta wonder how bad Mom's reproductive tract would've looked in an autopsy........
It’s horrible how women can just accept the fact that pain comes with our existence. One of my aunts during 30 years never visited her gynecologist and now unbelievable painful she has cervix cancer, and she’s 69 years old… she only worried when she started to bleed out 😞 We have to take care of ourselves and our daughters and all the women around us. So I really hope that now you’re okay and can live a life without pain. ❤️☺️
@@alejandraescobarq I doubt it, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and menopause are both related to hormones, but menopause doesn’t cure PCOS. When you reach menopause, you still have symptoms of PCOS in addition to symptoms of menopause.
@@shadowkissed2370, MINE stopped. I was worried about the pain hitting while I'd be driving, so Dr. Chang and I agreed that something had to be done. I'm better now, so there's that.
My wife is dealing with endometriosis and adenomyosis right now. I'm sorry so many people are going through this. It makes me wonder how much this perception of women is based on Endo going so often undetected for so long
@@BaronessErsatz I worry so much about menopause because of my PCOS. I still have not been able to have a baby. Right now I am having to be on progesterone birth control to regulate my periods but it is helping less and less. Before the birth control, I wouldn't have periods for 6 months and when they finally came I would go through two packs of pads a day and end up in the ER on morphine drips from the pain. I am the type of person that can handle a lot of pain, had wisdom teeth cut out without taking pain medication, had two spinal surgeries without pain medication after surgery, and so on, but I cannot handle the pain from those periods. I had Depo shots when I was a teenager, they were forced on me by my aunt and social services even though I wasn't sexually active. I wonder if that has any correlation with the PCOS because I wasn't diagnosed until later in life after 5+ losses.

In biology class we had an research assignment about different diseases and we were each assigned a different topic. Mine was on PCOS, and the amount of information on it compared to my peers’ diseases was surprising. A lot of the same information was repeated(which is totally fine, no problem there) but when searching for an exact part of this, you have to go through the same information over and over again, maybe that was just because of that databases available to us, but I still think this needs more attention since the impact that PCOS has on someone’s life is tremendous.
Same i did an assignment on PCOS and the amount of info available is more often than not redundant and if it is not then it is irrelevant and 95% of my class has never heard of PCOS

Doctor Mike, on behalf of all nurses THANK YOU! I started watching you, and I subbed because I happen to like medical stuff. When I heard, however, the respect you have for nurses, I fell in love. Again, thank you for showing us respect.
Thank you for saying PCOS is underrated. I was so devastated when I was first diagnosed with PCOS. Unfortunately, I wasn’t diagnosed until after my teen years. I was on the Depo shot, don’t even get me started on that, and had a long road of that clearing out of my system. After I met my wonderful OBGYN, I was diagnosed and later put on birth control for about 14 months. After coming off the pill, I conceived my precious little boy. I was so scared that I would never have children, but I was proven so wrong.
Yes PCOS is certainly underrated. I didn't get diagnosed with PCOS until late 20s - early 30s. I started my very first menstrual cycle late (around age of 16-17). I wish my parents showed more concern back then when I hadn't started yet, instead of just saying that it runs in the family for the oldest girl to be late with their period.
When I see around myself, 70% of my female friends have pcos and I realised how thankful I have to be. Its totally underrated and a lot of women have problems with pcos (and breast cancer) and men can be very unpleasant about it. But hey, we have to know about their prostate.
"runs in the family for the oldest girl to be late with their period" God that sounds like armchair expertise of the worst kind. What a weak attitude, to just decide on something like that and not go to an actual doctor to investigate. I feel for ya.

Hey there
Your point about Nurses always hits home for me. I had an extended stay in hospital due to a serious throat infection when I was 17.
My doctor was great, but obviously very busy and always just showed up, did what he needed to do, and then vanished. The people who I actually felt cared for me and made my stay in hospital not only bearable, but actually pretty pleasant, all things considered, were the nursing team. They took care of a lot of the medical stuff, but they also took care of the little things you don't think about. Things like bringing me a snack outside of normal mealtimes, without me asking, because I'd not been very hungry when dinner was served up. Things like chatting with me about their day-to-day lives because I was obviously bored of being in bed all day, so it helped to hear about their day... Those little things meant a whole lot! Nurses are 100% certified heroes in my book.
I love nurses so much! In my experience they go above and beyond to make you as comfortable as they can with so much compassion. Mad love ❤
Thank you Doctor Mike, for your kindness towards nurses. As a nurse myself, I feel that not many people appreciate nurses.
Appreciate the shoutout for PCOS. It's far more than just a fertility issue - I never plan on becoming pregnant but PCOS still affects my life every day. Energy, mood, weight, hair loss/growth. It's emotionally and physically draining, and doctors' "solutions" are pathetic. There needs to be much more research and awareness about this condition - it's one of the most common problems affecting women but it's so painfully unrecognized, most people have never even heard of it before. I hadn't until I was suffering for years and did enough research to diagnose myself (I did get officially diagnosed btw, but no other doctor had caught it until I went in and said "I think I have PCOS, can you check"). It's horrible and I truly feel like it's at the root of my depression and anxiety and general suffering in life. I wish it would magically disappear.
I love that you always end your videos with "stay happy" before "healthy". A subtle reminder of your incredible values, both as a medical practitioner and as a human being.

PCOS presents in very different ways. The polycystic part of PCOS is generally because of lack of regular ovulation, causing follicle cysts (ovum/eggs) to build up in the ovaries month after month until ovulation. At the same time, the lining of the uterus also does not shed. People with PCOS commonly can go 45 days to a year without a menstrual cycle (some even longer), and they can experience increased hair growth on face, chest, etc, as well as have difficulty losing weight and are often overweight or obese. Sometimes other types of cysts can develop on the ovaries and rupture, which can cause pain, but this can happen even to people who don't have PCOS.
Appreciate the nurse segment. Feels like we’re underrated often, but that’s slowly being changed.
Much love ❤️
Thank you for bringing awareness to PCOS :) is it true that vitamin B6 and magnesium can help with the pain of PCOS? I've been taking them for about 2 or 3 months now and haven't had any ovarian pain in the last 2 weeks 😃
A fun watch ♥ I was surprised to hear PCOS so I was like "OH my god, I know what that is!" because I have it XD ♥
“IT PROTECTS CANCER”
Me: hol up. I thought we were supposed to *prevent* cancer not protect it?
r u blind it legit said prevent edited in on the screen
Thank you for saying Nurses are underrated because they are underrated. My mom is a nurse and I can’t tell you how often she disrespected or taken advantage of. It made me smile seeing the respect you have for nurses. Thank you for your videos they have gotten me through some tough times.
You talking about the cold shower thing reminded me of my last visit to my previous GP. I went to her with a specific issue and wanted bloodwork done and she asked me if I'd prayed about it. I was so freaking mad. I kept trying to shut the conversation down and she kept pushing it. I never went back to her again.
Totally relate to the drool/slobber on the ceiling thing.🤣 We've had a mastiff, great dane, and wolfhound and they all slobbered.
I seriously love Dan's editing 😭😂 His humor matches Dr. Mike's energy so well and it always makes me laugh! It's one of the reasons I love this channel so much ☺️❤️
When I've been in the hospital several times over the last year, when a nurse asked me if she should leave the room, I was like no, I want you to stay. So she stayed. They have all been so kind. I can't praise nurses enough! The ones I've had, I loved them.💗
I have pcos and was told for 10years to just lose weight until I found a obgyn who diagnosed me and though it was a little late, I have Type 2, and so many severe symptoms not including the 290lbs I can’t lose though I eat 1500cal a day and dance 20mins a day. Thank you for making this a highlight. I about cried. So many docs ignore it or know nothing. Thank you mike! It means so much.
I LOVE nurses! When I had my son, when I have to get an IV, and when I stayed with my mom in the hospital for hand surgery, the nurses were the main people we saw and had the solution for eveything!
All of my doctors are DOs. I go out of my way to find and choose DOs over MDs.
I love what you said about Bear's drool! Newfies are my favorite dog and besides their cuteness WOW they drool!
Thank you for this channel!
I'm a med student who started his clinical rotations 6 weeks ago. I love literally all of the nurses I've worked with, they were all so nice and helpful.
2:45 it is also worth mensioning that the "blue light blocking" glasses that are clear are fake. If they should block visible light they need to be visibly tinted, amber or red.
Yea more akin to those nighttime driving glasses
Congrats on 10M! I love your channel!!
Congrats on 10 mil u life saver 🔥
Yes to the nurses. During my labor and delivery they did pretty much everything. They cared for me in literally every way. I saw doctors for minutes but they took care of me for actual DAYS
I was playing along with you, and honestly, please do more of these! They're so fun & love hearing your honest opinion on certain subjects! Also, congrats on 10 million subs, Mike! I'm happy for you, and to be part of the fun! All the love!
Edit: A show I recommend you react to sometime is Descendants Of The Sun! It's a Korean drama, and it's pretty good! They have medical scenes, so I think you should react to them!
I'm glad that you say PCOS is underrated...so many people are like '' it's nothing, you are fine'' but in reality, it's NOT.
Love nurses. I had surgery the other day, and literally everyone that was under my care was so nice. ❤
Nurses are so underrated. In the hospital my nurses, gave me food, helped me shower, cleaned my wounds, made me comfortable, check in on me, talked to me. I only saw my doctor for 5 minutes and the rest was recovery with my nurses. Absolutely amazing human beings, keep being awesome!
The nurses one is accurate! i have an aunt that works as a nurse and she already had packed schedules but when the outbreaks of covid started she hardly got home, she even got tested positive for covid but she's now alright and still working as a nurse. She's amazing, she's the first person we call when something that needs medical help happens :D
When I was in a hospital de appartement had a nurse how loved to whistle. Every day I was hoping he needed to work. It was a small thing but it made my day.
My mama is the best RN the world will ever know. She had always gone above and beyond for her patients, on the clock or not. Patients have changed healthcare providers that don't take their insurance just so they can keep her as their nurse. She has never gotten the respect she deserves from her employers, in recognition or pay. Saying nurses are underrated is such an understatement, but I'm still happy to hear it. Nurses are so important and care more than patients will ever know. Thank you, nurses!
this man is a doctor and still posts more than most full time youtubers, incredible. congrats on 10 million, doctor!
Isn't he also considered a boxer now? Like, half and half?
Love that you mentioned nurses! They are so underrated! I was just watching scrubs and saw a provider inserting a catheter. They need to give nurses more credit on shows.
Love your channel Dr. Mike!
Vitamin D supplements are quite necessary if you live in Germany and your natural levels drop to 8... true story. I thought I was dying.
Also important in Finland during winter
And Tasmania, Australia! 66% of us lack a suitable amount of vitD and are heavily encouraged to supplement through winter/spring
@@AmyislikecoolThat’s interesting-Is is more of a genetic predisposition in Tasmania?
@@grahamstrouse1165 im not actually sure if its become a genetic problem among born Tasmanians, but i was lead to believe it was a combination of the extreme low UV index in winter, the cold and the ozone layer actually affecting the way the sun hits the state
I'm in Texas and have been diagnosed with very low vit D. I'm on a double dose.
I love the way you advocate for nurses it is so refreshing!
I always appreciate you featuring PCOS because I have it, it has been life changing, and it definitely isn't talked about enough. Took me literal years to get diagnosed which was torture.
Now why did I start crying when he said PCOS is overrated? I keep telling people that it’s affecting my whole life, and no one believes me. Thanks Dr. Mike for mentioning this disorder and educating people about it.
I started tearing up too, and I don't even have it. But I've had multiple friends and family members with it, and it's been so hard to see them struggle because their doctors don't know what they're doing.
Sorry about that. Have you gotten solution to it now?
(He said PCOS is underrated because it affects so many and people don't realize it)
As someone who loves greys anatomy and made me want to become a doctor/surgeon one day this hurts .love ur vids btw💗
I love your videos and I would love to meet you in real life but congrats on 10M!!!!!
The way I look forward to every video he releases like he just makes my day better
CONGRATULATIONS TO TEN MILLION SUBSCRIBERS, MIKE! 😍 I wanted to thank you because you taught us much in an entertaining way. You (besides Grey's Anatomy which started my obsession with medical topics) are one of the reasons that keep me interested in medical stuff. :)
Edit: HAHAHA LITERALLY LIKE FIVE SECONDS AFTER I PUBLISHED THIS COMMENT YOU CALLED GREY'S ANATOMY OVERRATED 😭
MOM I'M FAMOUS, DR MIKE LIKED MY COMMENT AND GAVE IT A HEART
love the pfp 💕💕
@@kathryncampbell957 thank you! ❤
As an exercise science pre-med, I was happy to see the results. Bariatric surgery for some unknown reason reverses leptin resistance that regular weight loss does not. And people cold stretching always gives me that visceral cringe feeling. Snap city is approaching fast for them.
I forgot how good his videos make feel, now I'm binge watching all of them
As someone who has PCOS and has had so many issues due to it, I appreciate the underrated verdict. My sister and mom have it too and they've also battled with it far more than most expect
Thank you so much for saying that about PCOS. I got diagnosed in my late teens. It effects my everyday of life. Since I got in my teens I’ve had bad acne, heavy painful periods which made me so weak and prone to faint I had to go to the ER or be at bedrest. The struggle to lose weight despite being ultrahealthy and exercising. The struggle with both being superhairy on the body and at the same time going through hair loss (still not fully recovered. Having some spots on the sides of my head). Having hormonal headaches and then lastly: problem with infertility… going through ivf and have had five miscarriages… im going from being really angry to then switch to grieving and crying. Pcos is no joke…
I have PCOS and one thing most people don't know how it also comes with anxiety. And after being a literal hermit last couple of years thanks to pandemia, it's getting so much worse than it was before.
I really love and appreciate what you said about cold showers.. Thank you for that.
My immune cells need to find another way to fight infections; cause fevers, no matter how low, feel really, really bad.
