  • What is essential tremor and how does it differ from Parkinson disease tremor? In the first segment, the patient with essential tremor has minimal tremor of the limbs at rest. With holding up the arms in a fixed posture or performing a kinetic task, the tremor is accentuated. Essential tremor is diagnosed based on both a typical tremor with frequency of 8-12 Hz that is greatest with action and without other explanatory neurologic diseases. The second segment shows a patient with typical Parkinson disease tremor. The tremor is present with rest in the left hand and does not vary in intensity or frequency when the other hand is engaged in patterned motor tasks. Further, the patient demonstrates masked face and slowed, bradykinetic movements on examination. We thank the patients for granting permission to publish this information.
