The Whinlatter Fells, Brown How to Graystones from Darling How (The Lake District)

The principal feature of these fells is a ridge running from the Vale of Lorton in the west to Bassenthwaite Lake in the east. Travelling in this direction the main tops are Graystones, Broom Fell, Lord's Seat and Barf. Barf is in truth a satellite of Lord's Seat but was given the status of a separate fell by Alfred Wainwright.
Lord's Seat is the focal point of the group and sends out a number of additional ridges. To the south east is Ullister Hill, 1,722 ft (525 m), a bare mound surrounded by conifer plantations. Further on in the same direction is Seat How, 1,627 ft (496 m), a rocky top standing above the steep descent to Comb Beck and the Whinlatter Pass road. A second branch of the ridge curves around south and then west from Ullister Hill, terminating in Tarbarrel Moss Whinlatter Top and (Brown How) Whinlatter.
Between Whinlatter and the main east-west ridge is the quiet valley of Aiken Beck and the plantation of Darling How.

Hiya marra. As you started you're walk on the right hand side there's a white holiday let. 50 years ago it was a working farm ran by my auntie and unlce mainly sheep farming. Can remember on Sunday evening's going up there with my mam and dad brother and sister. We used to run riot as kid's. Harry Hardisty and his wife Elsie were the farmers Elsie was my mam's sister.Harry was the huntsman for the Melbreak fox hound's Any way another great vlog we've just watched Tracey's latest vlog aswell. The light near the end was stunning.It turned out wet in the end.Sorry it's long winded Marra.

Very interested to learn about that route down from Widow Hause, as we're heading over that way later in the year and I've always come straight down the steep descent from Graystones. I'll be downloading the GPX file and having a look.

Super video in the murky conditions (and your electric guitar riff at the beginning was very impressive! LOL). Really clear explanation of the route as always. It's a super circuit for a low cloud day though, good paths, quiet corners. Last time I did that circuit years ago, it was on a humid day and I remember the forest bits being a bit midgey. I know what you mean about that Graystones path straight up the fenceline from the car - we did it on the way up once and never again!

Whinlatter is one of the areas that just refuses to stick in my mind.. every time i walk round it i never get to where i wanted to be.. shudda just came down the descent of doom off graystones.. haven't seen a video of anyone coming down that way haha.. good stuff, tek care lad :)
